Selected by Ian Hylands - In the class I was teaching today we were talking about positions of action, and this is a perfect example. Even though this image is perfectly frozen at 1/1000th of a second you can almost feel the movement in the shot. You can imagine how fast he's going and see how focused he is on the next corner. This photo tells a pretty intense story, all in less than the blink of an eye, and that's what makes a great action photo. It also doesn't hurt that the light and composition are pretty awesome as well, I really like the way you can see the trail lit up in the background, and I'm guessing there's some high speed sync with flash, just a little bit of fill on the rider...
I'm going to guess synced with the Nikon D700's built in flash triggering an SB800 or SB900 in High Speed FP sync mode. Pretty easy to do at close range... Maybe someone who knows will actually tell us?
Its great to see how and why Ian Hylands selects the photos he does. His comments always help people appreciate the photo, give advice to photographers, and gives us a wide range of exposure to all types of riding and many different places. I would like to see some more lifestyle shots once in a while. After all, its not just time on the trails we love, but the world we create as riders.
if this aint pod worhty (lordofthedirt) then you drop a pod and shit on it thats the only wai to put this one down. the kids 14 show some respect for the sport let alone him.
Proof that it is the rider not the bike. My buddy and I went to diablo last weekend, and he rode a diamondback coil ex with promax mechanical brakes, and he still was better than almost everyone in our group.
Of course his fork's damper was toast by the end of the day and his hands hurt from squeezing brakes. And I'm sure he'll be even better when he gets on a dh bike. Still, I believe it is 90% rider, 10% bike.
Is this a photog or a rider site? I love great action photography but please lets 'focus' on riding. This is my morning entertainment and stoke fuel dammit.
this guy underdstands what some of us have been saying for the longest time. Don't waste our time with photo mumbojumbo, give us real riders the shots we want.
would you rather be 'stoked' and 'entertained' by seeing someone doing a quadruple backflip on a crappy mobile phone picture? This site would be rather boring without all the great photographers it has
I know free speech is against the law in canada but we killed thousands of people to get that right here in the USA. Forum= opinions and free speech. You can't handle the opinions then don't read the forum.
