Jordi had a great time leading his group.

Crankbrothers drew international pros and local riders together to celebrate the official release of the Mallet E enduro pedals, which were first announced at Eurobike. Riders gathered at the Crankbrothers' gallery for complimentary coffee and breakfast before heading out to demo the Mallet E pedals on the local Laguna Coast Wilderness trails. Pro riders Curtis Keene and Jordi Bago led the group ride on a variety of terrain, ranging from steep fire road climbs to cactus-lined single track descents, with vistas of the Pacific Ocean and California coastline visible in the distance.

Curtis Keene presents the Mallet E pedal

Jordi is loving the new pedals.

Curtis foot out flat out.

Big turnout and positive vibes for the ride Believe it or not this was only a portion of the group.

Over several hours, riders were able to put the pedals through their paces, and judging by the smiles and high fives, everyone had a great time. After the ride, guests gathered back at the Crankbrothers' gallery to share their experiences over pizza and beer, while Curtis and Jordi signed autographs for young fans.

Guests enjoyed riding the Mallet E pedals all over the Laguna trails.

Developed with Enduro World Series athletes including Curtis Keene, Cedric Gracia and Anneke Beerten; the Mallet E is smaller and lighter than the World Cup Downhill dominating Mallet DH, with a 52mm q-factor better maneuverability in tight trails.

Jordi locked and loaded down some stair steps.

Like all Crankbrothers pedals, it features 4-sided entry, industry leading mud shedding, and adjustable float and release angle. The body itself has a concave platform, adjustable pins, ribbed body sections, and chamfered edges to deflect rock strikes. Standout features include integrated traction pad technology to customize the shoe/pedal interface, and all new premium internal components and double seal system for improved performance and reliability.

bigquotesThe Mallet E's are truly the ultimate pedal for enduro riding and racing. We worked directly with our EWS athletes throughout development and they've already proven the performance with podium results at both Ainsa and Finale. It was amazing to have Curtis and Jordi here to help us celebrate the official release in our own backyard, and now we're really excited to deliver the Mallet E to riders all over the world. - Kellen Trachy, Global Marketing Manager at Crankbrothers.

Mallet E pedals are available now at crankbrothers.com, and arriving soon at dealers worldwide.

As a mechanic, I will never let a CB pedal touch my bike. I've never met one that didn't have play in it. Someone tell CB that there pedal designs look good on a computer, but don't actually last more than a month or two. I really hope these are different because they look awesome and the CB clip interface feels so great till the spindle wears and your pedals are toast. And CB is a great company and deserves a longer lasting pedal.

As a rider my mallets have lasted me a year and a half. Maybe if you tried them out more, especially new ones, you'd be suprised.

One of my CB candy's had issues, I opened it up and all the bearings fell out. No sealed bearings. On my cheap wellgo pedals, they had sealed bearings.

From my experience, I have one pair of eggbeaters going on 5 years and are still going strong. I have a pair of candys that are on another bike that have also been running strong more than half a year. I would consider trying them before you make assumptions. Mechanics by nature only see the broken or in need of repair parts, not the ones going strong.

I had M970 XTR's and those suckers are tougher than any Nokia 3310. I'm now on a CB Mallett DH and like it a lot. The platform, the added float... very good pedal for trail and DH duties as well IMO. I hope they'll hold up better than they forecast.

I've had my mallet 2 pedals for a little over 4 months. I have had no problems with them so far! I also have candy 3 pedals on my indoor trainer (i know i know LAME) haha. Haven't had any problems with my candy pedals either. Just as smooth as day 1! Ive got mallet E pedals in the mail. Im sure they will be even better with the updated beadings. Nothing but love for crankbrothers! Love the products.

If they were that bad, they wouldn't be one of the most dh and enduro used pedals...

never had any problem with mallet DH

I have 3 sets of Mallet DH's ranging from 1 to 2 years of use. All of them still run great with no issues and no service either.

The Mallet DH has been nothing but amazing to me. It took years of riding before the I had any issues

As a mechanic of 7 years and now a shop owner my conclusion of crank-brothers is their products are luck of the draw. I have a Joplin that i have had for 6 years (my celebration present to myself for gettin my first job at a shop) and i have only done routine maintenance on it since i got it and it still works great. on the other hand i have broke 3 sets of mallets within 4 months of gettin them. If they start making good products consistantly i would run them with no hesitation but my good old shimano xt pedals that are 5 years old will be my choice for now.

@CGalbreath @abzillah @rumblefish255 We've made significant improvements to the bearings and sealing across our entire 2016 pedal line:

1. Enduro brand sealed cartridge bearings on the outboard side (superior materials, grease, and sealing).
2. Custom formulated Igus ll-glide bearings on the inboard side (greatly reduced wear rates & drastically increased durability).
3. Double seal system including double-lip internal seal and new external seal (keeps out mud, moisture, and debris).

Individually, any one of these is an improvement. Together, they represent a tremendous increase in performance and durability, which has been proven in lab tests and real world riding. We're really proud of the new line and hope you have the opportunity to experience the improvements yourself.

That sounds awesome. I will definitely be trying a pair because they look like the perfect do it all pedal for the do it all bike. Thanks @crankbrothers

Is cb going to offer those as upgrade or service kits for the slightly older models..
My 14 mallet dh's for example. Love them and haven't had issues, but would be nice to add those features when I finally service them?
  • 3 0
madcracker79 Yes! The new premium bearings and double seal system are available as a "Refresh Kit". Compatible with all eggbeaters, candys, mallets, and 5050s model years 2010-present. www.crankbrothers.com/product/view/560

Thanks for the reply. Looking forward to the improvements. When my current Mallet 3's and Candy pedals break, I'll grab the Mallet DH. I do enjoy using CB pedals, I'm on my 5 or 6 set.

My 50/50 pedals lasted about 2 months of light use before the bearings stopped spinning freely. Put me off them to be honest.

Thanks @crankbrothers for putting on this event. The pedals worked well, the hospitality and company were great, and the pizza and beer hit the spot after all the riding. Stoked to ride with Curtis, too. What a great guy!

As for my long term experience with CB, the Joplin was a bit of a miss. But...I have been running the Mallet and Mallet DH since they came out. Many pairs on several bikes for DH and Enduro racing for quite a few years now. They have been flawless!!! In trying the new pedals, however, I really could not sense much difference in overall performance, but I could feel the shorter spindle. I like having a bigger "box" to distribute my weight around in as well as the addl leverage of a wider stance...especially being 6'4". So, getting the wider spindle is a really good option to have. Also, these pedals look great!!! They're on the Xmas list fo sho!

Thanks again!!!

WIth the Candys and 5'10s my shoes rubbed my crank arms pretty bad. With the mallet race DH pedal no rub. Anyone got feedback with these new mallet E's?
  • 2 0
Different Q-factor between the pedals, you can swap the shorter spindles on the Candy with Spindles on the Mallet DH for a wider Q and this will eliminate the rub.
  • 1 0
Crankbrothers, I had the Mallet 2 pedals www.competitivecyclist.com/crank-brothers-mallet-2-pedal with the Giro Terraduro shoes in size 46. I could not release from the pedals unless I was at the top of my pedal stroke because my shoe was too close to the crankarm. Do the mallet DH have a longer spindle than the Mallet 2's?
  • 2 0
Yes the mallet dh has a longer spindle @kcj801. But im wondering if they used the same spindle for the mallet E that they use in the mallet DH? @crankbrothers
  • 3 0
@g0shj0sh10 The Mallet E comes installed with a 52mm spindle (same as the Candy) for better clearance and maneuverability in tight trail conditions.

The longer 57mm spindle from the Mallet DH can be swapped into the Mallet E for a wider q-factor as desired. You can order the longer spindle now as a small parts request, contact us directly. We will release the longer spindle kit as an aftermarket item in 2016, which will be available on our website and at dealers worldwide.

every pedal I get from CB I prefer to swap to the wider Mallet DH spindles, even the candy

After I broke the axle shaft on a 2 month old pair of Mallets, CrankBrothers said it was my fault for not maintaining the pedals. I moved on and have never looked back.

Thats weird because I always tell them I am waaay out of warranty, and I smash them on rocks all day, and that I am happy to pay for the repair. They reply with: Here is your warranty RA number. They've always backed up their stuff with me - even when they shouldn't have. No company should service the stuff I kill for life!

@Mtman69 We gotta try these homie!

If you have a problem, you call them and they send you new ones. Then you have no more problems :-)

Its crack brothers...its not going on my bike
  • 3 0
thats why some are keene to have them at any cost
  • 3 2
Yeah I'm not sure what crack brothers is...but I'd suggest trying Crank Brothers. Usually people have bad experiences with cheap knock offs....but I guess if your cheap /your cheap!! Maybe you should sell some Rabbits instead of giving them away

That magenta or whatever color Santa Cruz is the ugliest color they have ever produced. Good god whyyyyyyyy. Last years models had wayyyyyyy sexier paint schemes.

Shimano shoe on a CB pedal...that's a violation.

I'm 41 and I bet I'd give most folks a run for their money out there up and down. Same could be said for most of the "old guys" in *that* crew. Hit me up if you're in town. Last one down buys the first round!

Sweet, so now my pedals can spontaneously fall apart with flashy "Enduro-specific" colors.
