Video: Dustin Gilding - The Revealing PT.1

Jul 2, 2012 at 17:55
by Harrison Mendel
Dustin Gilding is a murderer. And while he doesn’t have a freezer full of carefully packaged human remains he does have a yard filled with mounds of dirt that have been treated with a similarly pathological level of care. A trail shaped militarily – masochistically – with a chunk of steel and wood until every molecule is angled perfectly. Simply put, Gilding kills it with a shovel.

Gilding is probably best known for his segment in DH Productions’ ‘Here We Go Again' and his legendary backyard dirt jumps. However, those that think of him as a pure dirt jumper are sorely mistaken. His style exists somewhere at the intersection of motocross and BMX. Gilding smashes whoops like James ‘Bubba’ Stewart in an AMA sanctioned event and then rails s-berms that wouldn’t look out of place at East Side trails. You can see the influence of Vanderham as well as Chase Hawk and Bubba. It really is pure mountain biking - a combination of MX and BMX that couldn’t be ridden on any other vehicle.

Whipping out on the 40 footer

Most riders I know would kill for the opportunity Gilding has. Twelve acres of land in Abbotsford British Columbia and a 14,109lb (6,400kg) Hitachi EX-80. But having these resources and actually utilizing them are two very different things. The trail didn’t build itself. And you'd need vision to see the trail for the forest. And the perseverance to execute. And the skills to ride it. So it's not quite as simple as it would seem: forest + machine ≠ trail.

Ride what you dig isn't a credo, it's a lifestyle

After one year of digging, Harrison Mendel journeyed down from Kelowna to shoot the beast. It took two afternoons. That kind of effort/reward paradigm would seem totally asinine to most people but Gilding isn’t most people. ‘’ I am my own biggest critic, so to ride what I've built and love every bit of it is all so gratifying, it makes it all worthwhile.’’

I think this is my new favorite vid on pinkbike guys. Sick riding, sick filming, and AMAZING trail building
  • 1 0
This is gnarly. I thought he built this all by shovel, but he has an excavator! Lol
  • 26 1

Dustin is a weapon either way you boys put it

Kudos to both the riding and the trails, superb!

Love how he hits those big jumps with no knee pads, ballsy, the man obviously has never had an ACL recon ;-)
  • 2 1
Yep agree with you. It takes only one ACL and then the protective gear comes on.
  • 2 1
I love my new acl, and yes I protect it religiously!
  • 3 1
I wouldn't wish an ACL recon on anyone. I've only had one and dread when the other knee will need it. No idea how athletes who have 5 or 6 deal with it...they must have better drugs than me Smile
  • 2 0
Will knee pads protect you from tearing your ACL???? don't think so. The knee can easily twist even with knee pads.
What you need to protect it is a knee brace. Fairclough style!

its cool the way his name is ike an anogram for gliding in dust...it fits perfectly!!!
  • 1 0
 OMG thats actually pretty cool
  • 1 0
Nice one! Best anagram I've seen in a while.
  • 5 1
Nice edit. VOD maybe but not VOY though. Bloody keen riding without kneepads. Or a neck brace.
  • 4 1
The manual over the bumps has to be one of the nicest I have ever seen in my life, WOW !! Yep, definitely VOY canidate. Great work to all involved.
  • 1 0
Gorgeous trail construction, incredible speed and style over the jumps and through the berms, and that manual over the whoops was unlike anything I've ever seen on a bike; there's got to be an engine on his bike somewhere! I do agree with a lot of you that it was odd seeing him without anything but a helmet, my knees tingled just wathching. Excellent work to everybody involved!
  • 1 0
this has to be one of the most beautiful edits i've seen in a while... it stands with the ride-deity and matt miles at sun peaks edits for beauty and flow...possibly voy in my opinion.
  • 2 0
I've got a trail just like that in my backyard............oh wait.....no I havnt .......im dreaming again. Awesome.
  • 3 0
 People are getting so creative!!!!
  • 3 0

My mind was only just holding on and then there was the woop section. Splat.
  • 1 0
so he slides out on the easiest part of the trail and yet kills the rest of the trail???
  • 2 0
no knee pads... like a boss
  • 11 0
he wouldnt be much of a boss with shattered knee caps!!! hahaha
  • 2 0
B E A Utiful! Would kill to hit that trail.

 Summon your eagle powers, Dustin!

Ok really cool spot, no argument on that, much too big for meh but cool spot.

But, and bring in the neg props if you like, why in all the recent videos, the track looks like it's 100m-long, no more ? I mean 4 or 5 shots of the SAME berm is ... too much ? yes he railed it once, twice ... but why the 5 times? Same with the jumps!

Yet we have seen basically a huge double (nicely shaped), 3 berms (same shaping artwork Smile ), and a bit of forest, all that during roughly 2 minutes (rest of the 2:42 of random views, intro, ...). And it's not like if it was a different trick on them berms, no, same whip, same tabletop ... Kinda kills the flow of the video ...

For a lot of videos on PB I'd have to agree but this one just seems to pull it off. Maybe its the good camera work and different views but it seems to work on this vid.
  • 11 0

stayed up just to watch this...freaking sweet! gilding is the true definition of a trail boss...spends more time with a shovel in hand than a pair of grips in his hands. I give alot of props to all those trail builders out there, with out you mountain biking would not be they way it is today...so here is to build, maintain and ride...cheers

Known in Australia as a 12ie (twelvie). Anyone between the ages of 10 and 16ish. They get drunk on one Vodka Cruiser and complain when their boyfriend/girlfriend/love of their life, breaks up with them after one long week of dating... And they always post of facebook asking for people hosting parties. But its like deciphering the f*cking Da Vinci Code because they tipe lyk dis.

End rant//
