We All Wish Our First Trips to Whistler Were This Good

Put some style into the hips.
  Szymon with a big bike

Whistler Blackcomb was chosen as the best snowboarding place in the world by the Extreme Sports Channel a few years back. When it comes to mountain biking it deserves the same title, as a place responsible for developing the whole modern freeride and slopestyle scene. The Crankworx Festival in Whistler, since its first edition back in 2004, has become the home of gravity mountain biking legends and my lifetime goal to take part in it.

My dream came true last year when, after some very good performances on the FMB World Tour series in Europe, I was invited to the Red Bull Joyride in Whistler. For me this was a breathtaking adventure to compete in this biggest slopestyle event, but I used the opportunity to be there to also improve my freeride skills before the Red Bull Rampage that was coming later in the season. Whistler is where I would finally get to spend some time on my freeride bike in order to get used to it and build up my confidence in order to ride lines at Rampage.

Whistler is a magic place and I hope to come back every year. During my first stay there my friend Bartek Wolinski took some great photos that you can see below:

One of the best playgrounds out there is slowly waking up and getting ready for some serious shit.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Seems like the top of the world, definitely the top of the freeride world.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Flying is always good. Last view before my first drop in.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Moto-whipping in the middle of the Dirt Merchant track, the coolest trail in the Whistler Bikepark if you like jumps!

fot www.wolisphoto.com
This type of natural obstacle is not an easy place to take a good shot, but after so many photo sessions together Bartek and I make it happen everywhere we go.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Views like these will always make hiking up hills pleasant.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Careful on the rocks as it's not dirt anymore.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Sick style on technical jumps is what we all want to see and feel.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Do you know any trails that can compete with this view?

fot www.wolisphoto.com
  What goes up...

fot www.wolisphoto.com
  ...must come down.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Spot the landing, and then go for the next takeoff as quick as possible, the whole idea behind properly shredding Aline.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Practicing lines like this was good enough to finish Rampage in 11th place.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Spending time close to the nature is one of freeride's benefits.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Catching air while chasing the hawks seems like fun.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
  Lights and camera ready?

fot www.wolisphoto.com
  Here we go again!

fot www.wolisphoto.com
At the top of the bike park you can find so many different things to ride.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
Same here - steeper is better!

fot www.wolisphoto.com
The need for speed is a basic instinct of all freeriders.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
And the Dartmoor Roots bike is a perfect tool to get it with style.

fot www.wolisphoto.com
That's it, that's all. Thank you very much Whistler.

F*ck Disneyland. Whistler is the most magical place on earth. Can't wait to take that pilgrimage.

once you go once you might as well plan on going every year. That pace is more addictive than crack!
  • 8 0
They called that run there 'Crack addict' for a reason Rolleyes

Crack Addict is one of the "easier" double blacks, it was the first one I did, and would recommend it to anyone riding the blacks confidently looking to push themselves. Though Schleyer is probably the "easiest". Whistler is a life changing place, and anyone even thinking about going just needs to sack up and get there!

Yeah that steep, narrow boardwalk on Addict used to freak me out a bit, but I quickly learned that the tree on the turn at the bottom of it will catch you if you go too fast!

Yeah, what the OP said, word for word!

I love articles like this, (probably because i'm lazy...). They give you such a clear picture of the trip in a short space of time, some of those picture are insanely good and of course so is the riding!

Ill never forget my first trip to whistler. You watch videos abd think you know what to expect but its just better. My life changed after that and the next 7 years consisted of saving for my annual trip and riding as much ad possible so i could be in shape and could get the most out of my time there. The hardest part is theres so much other stuff to see and do too. But it just doesnt feel right to not go straight to the lift line every morning when you wake up. So in 7 trips i havent done anything but ride.

I went last year over Crankworx. It was a fucking awesome trip, in fact the best trip I'd ever taken and I cried on the drive back to Van to catch my flight home. I'm at 42 year old man.

So lucky to live only 2hrs away when I read off all you guys who are spread out across the world wishing you could ride here. the funny thing is Whistler is AWESOME, but there is SO much epic riding from the Fraser Valley up to Whistler it's hard to see it all and I live here. Impossible to see it all on a vacation.

 Really like this article

I was lucky enough to have a chance to go there last year since we were visiting Vancouver. It had been a lifetime goal of mine for over 10 years, and was truly even better than I imagined! Anybody who at least 'likes' mountain biking should go; its unbelievable - this is considering I didn't even have the ballls to attempt much beyond the blue lines and a couple of the black runs, and also that only the lower zone was open because it was a week before the bike park shut down for winter! GO THERE!

Also, genuine question: It seems very rare to see elite riders like Szymon wearing elbow pads. Is this because you manage to never hit your arms when you fall off, or you just don't fall off anyway?!

i was there last summer too, and i took all the gear i normally ride here in (knee pads, body amour, elbow pads gloves etc etc.) The first day i went out with all my gear on my lunch i thought i was going to pass out, it was unbearably hot in all that gear... so the days after that it was just gloves, knee pads, helmet and neck brace.

I wish my last Whistler trip went like this… Oh wait there was no last trip...

I was lucky enough that a forest fire caused the evacuation of the small town of Hudson's Hope while I was working in BC and me and one of the millwrights joked about hitting up whistler....then we went to whistler... Most amazing paid mini vaca ever!!!

 The POD-density is over 9000!!!!

I don't care how I looked while riding, my first trip there felt just as good as those pictures look!
  • 2 1
Well, there were some guys 'freeriding' n blazing single track in the laguna bush @35 years ago, and the marin guys chargn down dirt roads on clunkers around same time.
So saying 'The birthplace' is a lil misleading. Maybe use, 'one of' or 'big mountain'..?

My first time at Whistler I had just gotten my Scott Genius 40 XC bike and thought it was beyond badass, I showed up to there that summer and my jaw dropped when I saw all of the other bikes, I didn't have a full face helmet. For some reason i thought it would be a good idea to hit freight train and I very quickly ate shit pretty hard. I got a Dh bike after that and have been coming up for the last 4 seasons, it doesn't get any better!!!!
