The hills of southern Utah have always fascinated me being a skier and a mountain biker. Being a skier, the steep terrain with long spines and drops reminded me of the terrain I ski in the winter. The thought of being able to ride similar terrain on my bike always made my imagination run. When I started biking and shooting with Steve Lloyd, I was constantly talking about going to the desert and riding lines. "You can't just go down there and ride, it takes a lot of work to be able to ride that stuff," said Steve, which of course made me want take the challenge and get down there.

In October of last year Steve and I made the trip down south and I finally got a taste of riding bigger lines in the desert. Hiking a 1,000 feet straight up my first line and tipping in was pretty wild. You are sitting sideways because the top of the ridges are 6 inches to a foot wide, and the sides of the spines are anywhere between 50-60 degrees in steepness. So you can't exactly just roll into your line with ease. My first day felt like tightrope walking on a bike. Once I got a few lines down and started riding them, it started to get fun, really fun! Over the next few weeks Steve and I kept making 2-3 day trips to the desert to film and shoot. By the end of November with five trips to the desert under our belts, this is what we came up with. Enjoy!

This new player does suck.......my stoke-meter is goin way down. I'm stuck on my butt sick and can't even watch pinkbike vids.

Certainly does.. But try and tell the "report bugs here" thread and they defend their product.. Kind of shows the difference between a website that actually respects their users and tries to fulfil the users needs and a website that just wants to go "Wow! we use html5 and a new player that users hate".. haha.. It would seem obvious that html5 and their new player just aren't compatible with the majority of users systems.. People aren't going to go and buy a new computer just to use pinkbike.. lol.. And 95% of pinkbike users wouldn't even know what html5 is. When will programmers get the message? 95% of users of any website or program just want something that works and doesn't waste their time or money.

^ So, kinda like the bike industry eh? HAHA...jk...

And for those the player isn't working (haven't looked into it, but it works for me). Try Firefox? Works for me. Don't think Flashplayer has anything to do with it now, but if it does, updating wouldn't hurt either (Adobe Shockwave/Flash update).

 Bikes are awesome!

Making that terrain and skill required to ride it look easy, and extremely fun. That drop looks so much smaller in the vid than it does in the still, must look even gnarlier from the lip. Those pics look pro and that edit could have been in many of the NWD films not too long ago. Shredder, drop some more edits!

It's really hard to get a scale of the ridges and boulders from the mesa above. I'm not sure exactly where this was filmed, I assume Green River but there are a few other locales that look similar. Anyway, I used to ride motorcycles all over GR and a little place southwest of there called Caineville(used to be a huge film spot for fmx). Same thing. Huge mesas, with the gnarly shale ridges all the way down with a variety of different features and terrain. I've never ridden a mountain bike on them, but have dirtbikes. It's unreal riding up some of the ridges. You have to plan where youre going to turn around or escape routes the entire way up, because there are some spots where if you slip off the ridge there is no recovering, and you and your bike will either end up in a rut 8 feet deep or in a rockgarden with unforgiving edges and traps. It's pretty extraordinary to ride anything in a place like that, and something that will stay with you forever.
