BC Enduro Series 2014

The time has come...

Yes you have to wait until next summer, but coming to you will be one sweet BC Enduro Series. This Enduro Series will consist of 5 races over the span of the summer - 3 of which will be on the coast and 2 of which will be in the Interior of BC. Details will be uploaded to the website as they eventuate.

Expect anything from 1-2 day races, 2-4 stages per race, 1-3hrs in the saddle per location, or maybe some shuttling with over 3000ft of elevation drop? You will just have to wait and find out. I am sure there is going to be some great cash and product prizing too.

This may run in conjunction with an Interior BC Series adding Nelson to the list as well to make Kelowna, Penticton, and Nelson the series for the Interior.

Want to get a bit of a taste and teaser without having to wait until next summer? Then keep your eye out for the Penticton Enduro this coming September.

Sponsorship spots are still up for grabs! Email megan@ridingbc.com

Yes! So sick!!! There needs to be at least one race on Vancouver Island though!

not to be a douche, but someone might want to fix that "tentitive" on the poster. that said, titties on the brain is a forgivable offense...
  • 2 0
oh no - what bad proof reading by me, I was just too excited to get the info out there! Sorry, I don't think I can edit postings once they have been put on the home page of pinkbike - guess you are going to have to have titties on your brain forever now!

Squamish would be a great spot for a true enduro!
  • 2 0
Agree ship-it-fed-ex but I didn't get the most warm welcome there as they said they have too much going on there already every weekend and their resources are already tapped. Plus the clubs are putting on a sea to sky corridor series next summer with 8 races in the sea to sky area next summer (north vancouver to pemberton), so its already going to be saturated with enduro's so will be aiming to move more into the interior, where there is just as good if not better riding and the communities are lining up to get on the race schedule!

Great to see some events finally coming to Northern BC! Oh, wait...
Looks like we're stuck with the more local events in Smithers, Burns Lake, and Williams Lake - Good thing those clubs put on such great races/events!

Pretty excited for this, I just hope that Enduro isn't interpreted as an XC race without timed climbs as was the case for the MEC Bike Fest course.
  • 1 0
i didn't think it was any different than any other (non lift accessed) enduro - unlike last year's event (that didn't dictate how you arrived at each timed stage). are other current events being run differently?
  • 3 4
There seams to be this preconceived idea that all enduro races have to be a certain way; mainly a downhill stage race that you have to pedal to the top instead of taking a lift and that you do it on a mid travel bike.

Really, its just a race over a set distance and only certain portions are timed. A stage could be a climb and still be enduro. I hope its a good mix of all kinds of riding, I would not want to see any uphill stages though I said that just to make a point.
  • 4 0
Thats what Enduro is... you ride to the top of every DH section. But you have a start time at each stage so you can't be a slouch getting to the starts. Its rally racing for mtn biking.
  • 2 1
Agreed, it's Rally Racing for mountain bikes, but theirs nothing that says the stage HAS to be downhill. It usually is but to different degrees depending on location of race.

Hopefully the timing starts when you start climbing. I heard the Enduro in Fernie was a climb at your own pace and timed on descents which is a terrible enduro format. Hopefully this series has the kinks worked out, with enough interest I hope they will.
  • 2 0
Huh K-D-M??? Thats EXACTLY what Enduro mtbing is, climb at your own pace (within time limits) to BOMB/RACE the descents. Technically Enduro comes from motorcross where stages are up and down, but Enduro MTB is definitely, and so it should be, biased to the downhills. You want to get timed on the up and down...race the plethora of XC races that already exist.

What made the Fernie race such a clusterf*ck was not only poor organization and timing equipment, but also that both Enduro and Overall(XC) riders were on course together. At least most had a good time regardless.
  • 1 1
My bad. I actually though there would be some premise to the overall time, perhaps a bonus time for fastest over-all time added to the DH time. Fernie for example, 4 summits, 4 decents and then factor in the overall fastest course time? Having not raced a true Enduro I guess I don't understand what there is to really prevent someone from humping a full-on DH for all around advantage? I race xc and know the difference enough to appreciate how the Canmore Organ Grinder wasn't an Enduro format more-so than a marathon.
  • 2 0
I hear you on the DH bikes and thats where its up to the organizers to set a proper course where a DH bike should not have an advantage. So stages that are 80-90% downhill with some short climbs and also setting proper time limits on making it from stage to stage so you can't just walk your bike up.

Sissors888 and pushingbroom and others - thanks for the great comments as that is exactly what enduro racing is - not set rules or 'how' it should be run, and yes you climb to the top to get to your stage to the timed descent. And yes organizers need to plan a course accordingly so to avoid anyone being able to use DH bikes. Enduro has seemed to draw the more relaxed fun mountain bikes and hopefully it stays that way and doesn't get too opinionated and political, we all just want to get out there and ride a wicked course with our buddies and have some competition as part of it Wink Keep the comments coming on what you want to see though. I hope of make the series a mix of some that have more pedalling to get to timed stages, 1 that may involved a shuttle to gain access to even more terrain and other shorter ones. Something for everyone and not a series that will just favor one type of rider. I might move a coast one to the interior as there seems to be a lot of enduro's that will be added to the sea to sky corridor next year. Put in your votes on the best locations you would like to see!!

I'm going to ride the Penticton enduro on my DH bike.
  • 1 0
What if you have to ride to the stop and shuttles are allowed 'theprocrastinator'?? Its going to be in the Peat Bog trail area I think.
  • 1 0
I do a lot of maintenance and building in the peat bog area, I only have one bike, and if there's gonna be a race on my trails then I'm riding in it!
  • 1 0
This whole video was made on the lower peat bog trails:

The bridge at the beginning is one of my creations

No shuttles.. self propelled. the essence of Enduro.
  • 3 1
We need to include an Alberta stop on this too!

Any details on the Penticton Enduro this season? Google gets me nothing.
  • 1 0
There's been talk about running it in the Bog, with a staging area at the Lost Moose campground
  • 1 0
Hinton could easily host an Enduro
  • 5 0
Hinton, Moose, Baseline, Crowsnest Pass, even Canmore. Just a matter of people stepping up and organizing, and riders to grow balls big enough that they are willing to let the clock tell them how slow they are.
  • 3 0
Include razors edge, cox hill, prospector, pass powederkeg, and some moose trails and we have a good start for alberta locations.
  • 3 1
Even better would be a full Alberta series. There are so many locations here where enduro races could be held. One of the great things about enduro is that while more vertically is obviously better, it's still possible to have a race with minimal vertical. This means smaller venues can host races, and since lift access to the top isn't necessary, it opens up so many more venues as options - it also makes the course more accessible to spectating. To be honest I'm surprised enduro racing hasn't caught on already here. I'm predicting with in the next couple of years it will.

 "Even better"? Nice try.

With all this interest from Alberta and Eastern BC - you guys are making me consider adding a series in that region as well Wink What would your ideal line up of locations be? I have no problem putting on the races, I would just need a local to set the courses for me since I am not familiar with the riding in crowsnet pass / canmore etc area!! I am getting excited with the thought!!

Oh to answer the original question - no details on the Penticton race for this season yet, first trying to figure out whether to have it Sep 14th or Sep 28th and then finding out about what permits are required. As smoke said and had suggested to me, it will be looking to be run on the Peat Bog area with the campground as the hub. I am strapped busy this next week, so aiming to get some details out mid-august. I will post details on the www.bcenduro.com website when more info is available. It will be a pretty low key fun event just as a little wrap up ride/party to finish the season. Unless I get a ton of interest and it blows up to be something bigger then expected Wink

For BC Interior-Fernie, Golden, maybe Revelstoke, Nelson
and
SW Alberta-Coleman, Calgary (Moose Mtn and West Bragg Creek)
  • 2 0
Razors edge would be awesome, pedal up quaite trail to the trail head, start timing at the beginning of razors. Its a true AM trail with very challenging sections, hard to find a trail that is better. This would be my must for recommendation. Moose mtn forsure Strange brew in west bragg would be pretty fun Cox Hill in K country would be a sweet trail to time. Getting up this would suck for everyone. Prospector in exshaw if it gets through approval.

Baseline is perfect (shuttle road climb, lots of trails), but I'm sure nobody would have the balls to show up. Hinton nordic centre would be sick as well. What I really want to see is a toonie series so you can get lots of people to dab their foot into things. I asked the CNC and they said I would need full safety: medical crew, evac plan, more of a weekend race kind of thing. BC, crowsnest, baseline have the crown land, where there is less red tape.

 So pumped on this!
How will it work? Complete all races in the serious and receive a cumulative score? Are enduro races part of UCI scoring?
  • 1 0
You can race 1 race or all 5. Points will be allocated for each race to give overall winners for the full series. It will be run through Cycling BC but not as a provincial race. You will need a UCI license ($143) or Citizen License ($4Cool to enter - but if you don't then it just means you buy a day license for each race you enter which is $10 a race. If you buy a Citizen License as you don't plan to race any UCI races, then you can still race in the Open Category (main category) with a Citizen License.

 Awesome, good options for everyone.

 natewynanscreations:

There is an awesome well established grass roots series on the Island that includes a few enduros. It's well timed, fun, and costs a lot less than a hundred bucks(~30) Wink
  • 1 0
A good deal IF you live on the island. Two people + BC Ferries (there and back) + gas + lodging + race fees, can easily run you over $400 .
  • 2 0
 Hi ukr77,

Yes I spoke with Colin about the Island one and maybe corporation one of those into the series - but you guys seem to have a nice series developing over there that will be gaining momentum for next year and as iwatapinkbike said, it gets pricey for the mainland to get over there and thinking I would prefer to add an extra to the interior that doesn't get as much exposure with this type of thing. There is so much great riding all over BC that we will be just trying to capture a bit of it all Wink

Penticton was made for Enduro racing!!! This is going to be awesome!! I'm in!!!
  • 2 0
I dont care what the stages are like, just stoked on riding new trails!
  • 2 0
Well said Bryson - thats what I feel Enduro's are really all about and that's exactly the feel I got with the 5 enduros I did in NZ earlier this summer. Some where 5 hour riding missions, some where pure shuttles, and others in between. All so very different and all in completely different regions with completely different types of trails - with each one being as equal fun as the last! All with such fun amazing people that you would meet at them. I LOVE it.

This is going to be so good!
