Isn't it part of the actual prize of winnig joyride to get sponsored by Redbull? I would think that is why Genon's on Redbull. But stoked for Thelander, he deserves it!!
Redbull is poison and it's too bad it's so cool to be sponsored by them. The drink is extremely unhealthy and dangerous. I think the suckers are the athletes that want to get sponsored by the poison pedaling energy drink companies. These corporations are hijacking sporting events for their own agendas. Open your eyes.
Nick Hansen no it isn't, Greg Watts won a few years back, So did Zink, granted Watts was and is on rockstar, but after Zinks win Monster picked him up instead.
I call bullshit... Yes red bull is unhealthy but it has single handedly put every action sport on the map. Before redbull people were sleeping in their cars. Now they are buying houses and building their own backyard jumps.
Da-Moose, It wasn't a Red Bull Event back then, Just Crankworx, it may have been sponsered by Monster back then though Cant remember what years it was the ME Slopestyle, But Anthony Messere got 3rd a few years back and got picked up by Red Bull... I think we may have a conspiracy theory here... haha
There's plenty of other sponsers who can stimulate growth in extreme sports beside energy drink companies. I agree that Redbull has created financial abundance for riders and event holders but look at the values of these companies.
The more negative feedback I get from my comments proves people are products of corporate marketing.
@upcyclez: I know there have been rumours about energy drinks being unhealthy, but until now there have been no tests or scientific proof that the Taurine in it would be unhealthy or effect your body in a negative way (other than having the exact same effect as the caffeine and sugar in the drink). I will agree that it is unhealthy as in drinking water is better. But no one was able to proof yet that it would be worse for your body than Coca Cola, coffee or tea.
@KieferEvans: I don't follow the slopestyle scene too much, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the comparison you are making is a bit unfair. Anton Thelander has been in the international professional dirt jump / slopestyle scene for several years, where Thomas Genon is a new rookie who just started competing with the professionals. Give him some more time. Compare how Söderström did during his first season as a professional DJ/slopestyle rider and how he's doing now. I can see Genon grow a lot more aswell in the near future.
@upsyclez RedBull may not be the healthiest thing out there but they are the ones who push these sports to grow by helping put on these events, and developing these riders and helping making it possible to follow there passion, not to mention creating role models for thousands possibly millions of kids. Yes they are using riders to as "products for corporate marketing" but look at what it has done to our sport! Just Red Bull alone has given so much exsposure and helped the growth of mountain biking, if it wasn't for Rampage and Joyride brought to the public through RedBull Signature Series and all the youtube and other content they do the majority of people would think we are a bunch of spandex granola eating lame-o's (no offence to anyone I love my granola and understand the whole spandex thing though not for me) but they have helped get more people stoked on the sport we love enabling us to do incredible things, like X-Games for example. There can never be to many people stoked to ride. We all have the same passion for riding otherwise we would not be on Pinkbike having this conversation. Its ok if you dont like Redbull but you cant say they are bad for the sport.
And besides you called it "Unhealthy and Dangerous" yet you mountain bike? More people get harmed on a daily basis from biking than anyone has drinking Red Bull.
The role model for Redbull are setting up kids for poor diet habits.
One can't compare food dangers to mountainbiking.
Look what GoPro has done to extreme sports, very similar to Redbull.
All sports would evolve without enery drink corps. As a former BMX racers the bike companies evolved the sport to what it is today, an Olympic sport.
You are really going to blame Red Bull for poor diet habits? If you are going to get that radical they why not blame GoPro for giving kids stupid ideas for swiming with sharks, or jumping off of cliffs in a wing suit. Red Bull is fine in moderation as is everything else that gets FDA approval. And yes sports would evolve with out energy drinks, but you can't give them shit for helping growing them. I mean McDonalds is a huge sponsor for the Olympics, so is Coca-Cola. Whether you like it or not they are there and they are helping progression and making things happen that other wise wouldn't.
Monster need signed more european riders and make more comp for sure, redbull just signed every good rider and dominate on sponsored FMB event. Peter Henke, Antoine Bizet, Tomas Zejda can be candidates and they looking for north american rider it will be T Van Steenbergen, Carson Storch, or Liam Wallace
@mattin dude i mean from mtb dirt slope discipline.. on BMX i think monster riders is far better from redbull riders.. monster have some sick rider list like main, casey, baldock, cranmer, cam white, bestwick, byron etc..
Yeah I agree they should sponsor more there. According to their website the only ones they sponsor at the moment are both the Sam's from the UK, and only two more DH riders
But luckely the Monster Energy distribution here really supports us. I organized 2 contests, both with Monster Energy as one of the sponsors. The first time they hooked us up with a crazy ammount of drinks, they were even handing out several cans to people to take home too, and the second time they rented an indoor skatepark for our event (and a lot of drinks again and some prizes). I have huge respect to them for supporting events in our sport so much. They really support the underground stuff, where Red Bull usually only sponsors stuff that's (nearly) mainstream or events that are so big that they will make it to the national news (stuff like the Red Bull Air Race, or the dude who jumped out of space).
EDIT: My opinion is mainly based on what happens in The Netherlands tho. Red Bull is a great supporter of our sport too with events like this one and the Rampage, and I have big respect for them aswell for that!
Monster wouldn't be around if red bull didn't pave the way.. An yes any idiot knows it is unhealthy. I am sure half the athletes have water or something else in their red bull/monster show time cans. Just shut up and watch people doing things you wish you could.
honestly, although it is still the drink company, redbull athletes and the sports they represent seem very distanced from the actual drink itself. I, being an extensively susceptible teenager of course, feel little to no draw to drink red bull to up my riding game. And I also believe in the organic lifestyle when possible. but if rebull hands me a salary to do what I love i'm gonna take it. they've already made a name for themselves in the extreme sports world, b****ing about it now will not "open everyone's eyes to the corporate brainwashing going on". The support happening within mountainbiking from redbull seems very genuine, coming from a healthy lifestyle supporter. Drink sucks, but redbull sports seems to be turning out to be something greater than a taurine filled drink. @upcyclez P.S. hope this consoles you a bit as opposed to just neg-propping comments like a child haha
im with ya rjscherbaum, but upcycles upset because he's right in the fact that making things like gmo redbull mainstream is only going to lead to lower quality food consumption overall, and it's a way for people to just compare bad vs worse instead of getting out of the norm and growing some organic food or something bizarre like that. But no need to get worked up folks all the athletes surely have water in their red bulls haha probably some amazing spring water
Red bull makes most of its money from the events it hosts and not from the drink itself. It has done amazing things for the sport and for lots of other extreme sports too. I think most or certainly a lot of people forget at times that they produce an energy drink, which is actually very good for whilst you are doing sport because it replaced your salts and sugars that you lose from respiration and sweating.
@lukachadwick, you want an isotonic drink for salt and sugar replacement. I personally wouldn't recommend energy drinks like Red Bull or Monster for exercise. It is a diuretic, so will actually dehydrate you. And needing a wee before or during a race is less than ideal
Dude from day one energy drinks like mt. Dew have been pushing the industry way farther than bike companies or any other company alone could ever do. You cant blame red bull for bad parenting or poor life/health choices! When red bull touches turns to gold which means our sport moves up in popularity. Your analysis of bmx racing is poor the sport is dying. Yes it is in the Olympics but Alice post just won 3 days straight on pro women's at nationals and made $1500 they made more than that in the early 90s. However red bull is getting involved. Give it a couple years and watch the money fly!
Guess all that matters is the money. Saddly most riders would probably get sponsorship from Monsanto if they were offered enough money. Selling out is destroying the human race. Think about sheeple.
unfortunately you are right money talks bullshit walks. Money makes the world go round and pros aren't pros unless they are paid to do it and someone has to step up and pay them.... and basically from day one of action sports it has been soft drink companies like Mt. Dew, redbull, monster and rock star..... bike companies only have a few factory spots and riding events unfortunately doesn't pay the bills.... $1,000-$10,000 for the winner unless you are Brandon Semenuk you aren't winning enough to pay the bills....
THANK YOU UPCYCLEZ! Don't bother arguing with any of these sheeple. People are saying that they are pushing the sport? Pushing it to what? Don't get me wrong I love biking. But I literally had to move from B.C. because it got overtaken by complete dip-shits who have bought into the idea that you have to be decked out in corporate logos. On top of that, they take on this narcissistic, bad attitude like their better than everybody because their decked out in bright colors and expensive gear. I mean there's a police state being erected in the U.S. set up by mega corporations, and people are defending corporations? What the hell is going on?? Do people really not see where this corporate takeover is going??
Why would he the judges seemingly don't care about them anymore. I don't give a shit how hard an oppo flip whip is the greater risk of injury on a double backy should trump it. Plus it looks way cooler. Antoine got no props here and none at Joyride hell he didn't get any at Nine Knights either doing it on his DH bike.
Well these are some really cool sport's which i respect but they are more like hood sports! What i meant by extrem i was referring to more like free ride sports, like mtb, or skiing, snowboarding wingsuiting, surfing, climbing... and lot's of other sports !! Like really extrem sports where you could actually die!
Oh like Keir Dillon, Stevie Bell, Russell Winfeild, Ben Hinkley, Gabby Maiden, Chuck Evans, Kevin Arnold, and Ray George and Elliot Jackson are mountain bikers....
A basket ball is way cheaper than a mountain bike, doesn't require long expensive hospital stays to get good at and you make a shit ton more money playing for the Lakers than for Specialized. Almost all the African American population live in urban areas not the mountains. There are some pretty dope brothers riding bmx street and skate street.
@ tyler dude it seems like you think i am racist or some kind!! I am not i am really not trust mu. But i haven't seen a black dude on free ride movie ever neither in downhill races and i bet i am not the only one. I am not saying that there isn't i am just saying they are not very into extrem sports like white pps in general! Sure they are great in sports for example football and basketball and baseball so many collective sports but i haven't seen once in my life black dude ride skis. And all i asked was does anyone has any idea why they aren't into it, is it boring to them, or "scared" or whatever..Respect to the black pps all of em.
I think cultural background still influences what type of sports people do. For example I was born and raised in The Netherlands, where the big national sports are soccer and field hockey. I hate both. My parents ar both from Hungary, where for example waterpolo is very big (I did waterpolo for years and loved it), and where the big wheeled riding scene is huge, also for street. Here in The Netherlands I'm one of the very few mtb street riders on the whole country, where as Hungary has hundreds of riders in every single town. Also drum and bass for example is huge in Hungary but not at all in The Netherlands, and guess what my favourite music style is? Yes, drum and bass. Even though I was born and raised in The Netherlands, only had dutch friends, and only been in Hungary a fairly low ammount of times, just for short holidays, I think my roots from before I was born have still influenced me.
@Mattin It's interesting, I've never noticed such a huge amount of mtb street riders you're mentioning here in Hungary. I'm learning in one of the biggest cities in Hungary yet I can count them on my two hands. But the drum and bass part of your comment, well this part I can confirm. ps can I ask which city were you referring to? Because I'm moving there haha
When I was in Miskolc I've seen so many bikers. Both in Tapolca and the city centre groups of riders were passing us by all the time. Not only street tho, but only that town has more street mtb riders than there are here in The Netherlands. Also when I was at the Factory skatepark 75% of the riders were on a mtb. Here usually bikes aren't even allowed into indoor skateparks, but when they do, on BMX-nights, I'm pretty much the only one on a mtb, even tho both are allowed on BMX night. Also in Budapest I've seen a lot of mtb riders, more than the ammount of skateboarders and bmx riders in total I see here in Amsterdam. As far as I know there's only one other guy in Amsterdam who rides a mtb for street and/or park.
I once saw a documentary explaining that 80 % of white people had a particular gene that made them enjoy adrenaline rush/risk more than black people's DNA and a great deal more than Asian peoples DNA which was something like 20%. I have no idea if it was bullsh+t but it was a Japanese documentary so it was not trying intentionally to be anti Asian or anti Black.
Oh my god these are two of the dumbest conversations I've ever seen on a video. Talk about the video and the sick riders in it. Who cares about energy drink bashing from some vegan hipster and the racial ignorance of a guy from Albania.(I'm listening to Tupac lol) Sick run Thelander and great inaugural event Soderstrom!
This was happening 30min away from my place but instead I was at my... daughter birthday party! Yeeeee! (Grrr!)
The live sending was boring as f%&k. Most impressed with the 17y kid, no major sponsors that took 3rd place, Alex Alanko. Should listen to Martins comments: ”Wow, this kid is good, wow, this was world class, that is a really hard trick to do, wow, who is this kid?”
Dirt?.....mountain??..... Don't get me wrong I like slopestyle, it's why I ride, and why I ride the type if bike and trails I do.... But that being said.... Still trails...sorta, atleast they contain dirt,
Couldn't agree more with yoonytoons, who gives a flying f*** about whether energy drinks are unhealthy, that was some slick riding from a few v. talented individuals and I very much enjoyed watching it! Let's go shred!
cleanlander > genon any day.
energydrink.redbull.com/company

Drinking unnatural anything is poison to the body.

However, Red Bull is excellent in Jaegerbombs
P.S i am listening 2pac right now :-)))
Elliot Jackson is one of the raddest dudes in DH Example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1vl_2x6w5M
Ray George is gnarly on the DJ amoung other things: www.pinkbike.com/video/258671
and i was just answering your questions...
