Sick New Bikes at The Camp of Champions

Apr 9, 2010
by Ken Ach
At the end of last summer we decided that in addition to stepping up our coaching line up we would step up the bikes that campers ride. Our bikes were always the sickest bikes of any camp. That wasn't enough, we wanted the sickest bikes in Whistler. We've been working hard all winter with our bike sponsors to make this happen. A huge part of coming to The Camp of Champions is riding the sickest bikes in the sickest bike park on earth.

This summer our bikes are spec'd so insane that even sponsored pro riders are jealous. Check them out inside!
photo

Our bike sponsors have hooked us up with their top of the line DH/FR whips for campers. We couldn't have built bikes this great without the help of all our great part sponsors. We've spec'd out all the DH/FR bikes with various World Cup calibre builds so that when you come to COC you can experience the subtle differences specific components can make. Learning to ride means learning the difference different setups on the same bike can make to the ride you experience. We want campers to have every advantage we can give them. These bikes and these parts aren't something you can usually demo... unless you are demoing a bike from a World Cup Race team. When you choose your camp this summer, check the bike you will be riding. COC/World Cup Build or a Rental Build. It's up to you.

Having sick whips backed up with coaching from people like Mike Montgomery, Greg Watts, Andrew Taylor, Andi Wittmann, Alan Hepburn, Mike Hopkins, Gareth Dyer, Casey Groves, Darcy Turenne, Kelly McGarry, Ryan Berrecloth and others, make it so that you will learn the most and have the best time ever at camp.

All bikes have mechanicals, so you are backed up by our Ride Along Mechanic® - a COC exclusive. He fixes any mechanical on the spot or swaps bikes with you so that you never miss a lap. Ride More = Learn More.

Here's a run down on each of the bikes that will be available for campers to ride this summer.

Here's what the guys at Spank tell us about the new Tweet Tweet

The Tweet Tweet has in a very short time become a benchmark for core DJ/Street/Park riders world wide. Spank gets letters all the time from riders just saying thanks for the Tweet. At 2.48 kg, in butted 4031 CrMo, it is a light weight, bombproof, aerial weapon. Add to a near perfect geometry our proprietary ECO coat translucent finish and custom machined dropouts and gussets, and you have one tough little beauty! The Tweet can be complemented with matching stems, handlebars, grips, clamps, spacers, sprockets, and our custom Spank SS chains! Together they make for some of the coolest builds on Earth.

I think that Tweet Tweet is just gorgeous. Even though it comes in a blue similar to the components - that chrome was the right choice on that build.

im getting stoked for staying home cause that shits to damn expensive
  • 9 0
I would definitely buy that more wood for 3000 dollars at the end of July....
  • 1 0
 She's a beaut!
  • 1 0
Oh yeah with a spec list like that you'd be crazy not to buy her for under 5000, They sold last all of last years bikes for 2500 and under and those things had insane specs. I Wouldn't be surprised if the Morewood Makulu, Banshee MkII , Santa cruz V-10, and Transition Tr 450 were all under 3500 after the camp finishes up
  • 2 0
cause they make so much money from the people that pay to be there lolz
  • 2 0
yeah but those bikes are being abused every day at Whistler, even if they are maintained by a professional mechanic your still going to have those little tykes that just don't give a crap about "loving" the bike and trashing it for a week straight.
  • 1 0
^ was just about to say that odin
  • 2 2
Actually they're usually in great shape after camp. The campers always respect the bikes and the mechanic ensures they're always running in perfect shape, every day. So even if you ride a bike in the Whistler bike park all summer, but maintain it constantly and fix or replace any damaged components, the bike will still be in great shape at the end of the season.
  • 1 2
^ that and a better Question would be What would you break besides Bearings? No matter How hack you go you not gonna break anything but Bearings with a builds like that.
  • 4 0
icedemon05lrb, santa cruz is one of the most reliable companies out there. If you've ever ridden one/owned one, you would know. Take the bullit for example. look how long its been around for, and theyve barely changed the geo on it ever since its been put out. Not to mention, they have a great warranty. If you own an older model of theirs and you have the warranty, send the frame back and they'll give you the new model of the same frame, just add like 500$, which is a great deal. And its no biggie at all, but one of the best downhill riders(steve peat) rides for them. They've been around for a long time, and the v10 is an ace downhill bike.

Dude its not the bike its the rider.. you could put him on a mongoose and he would kick ass. I have ridden a v10 and personally they suck. Like I said throw some decent bikes in there like giant or specialized. I am not talking about who rides them either... nor am I gonna say specialized is bad ass cuz of Sam Hill.. he is still kicking ass after changing bikes. Santa Cruz is a worthless bike IMO.
  • 1 0
i back icedemon up, it is about the rider. have you seen wade simmons on the Sh*tbike? FYI (article in bikemag about the shitbike)
plus steve romanuik rides mongoose, a better model, but still a mongoose and he rips. as for the bike, it's rider preference. personally i'd love to have a scott gambler, but i'm cool if some dude says it's weak. it may suck for them, but i like the suspension design on it. plus i like how it looks. but i won't front about people's bike choices unless it's a hella excpensive bike and they don't really deserve to ride it. i realize some people actually save up to go to this camp, but it's money you can put to better use. and having pros teach you for a week is ok, but shredding with your buds and pushing each other to progress for months and years is even better.

plus i'm stoked cuz every friday i get to go shred the local hill fr what it costs you guys to get a hamburger.
i have no experience with v10s but they look pretty gnarly.
  • 1 0
Okay, now can you explain WHY you think the V10 sucks? What don't you like about it's geometry? It's suspension? etc...etc... Otherwise you're just talking out your ass.
  • 1 0
I don't think it sucks. I think it looks pretty sexy. But it's riders preference. Not all geometry is going to work for everyone.
  • 1 0
I wasn't referring to you rangemaster. I was referring to the captain complain above you.
  • 1 3
I dont like how it feels compared to the faith, glory, bighit, demo 8 (no matter the year and frame), sunday, yakuza series, gt, norco, cove peeler, intense m6, yeti 303, asx, Kona stinky (mind you I dont like them either) and any other bike I have ridden .. I would say that Kona and the V10 are at the bottom of my list. Why should I be so inclined to tell you my opinion when this is a site for comments and discussions? I really dont want to explain my "PERSONAL PREFERENCE" nor should I have to. I LOVE RIDING and choose to ride what feels good to me and what I kick ass on... Thanks for your input Have fun riding!
  • 2 0
You answered your own question slick. You said this is a site for comments and DISCUSSIONS. I'm trying to have a DISCUSSION with you sport. Your personal preference is part of this DISCUSSION, so it would make sense for you to explain it since the DISCUSSION I'm trying to converse with you about is in reference to it. But it seems you don't have any real, valuable, or tangible input to add to the DISCUSSION.
  • 1 2
Right and you just seem to know everything.. so are you mr. knowitallcndoanything. Because if thats the case then you have answered my question for me... Its always funny when the cats out of the bag and The Douchebag in the thread makes himself known. Thank you cyrix good luck with your colloquial info. Please get a life and ride!
  • 1 0
children play nice. lets all just settle down and go ride our bikes.
  • 2 0
I never claimed to know everything champ. I was just asking for your input on a particular frame, which you constantly refuse to give. Don't get your panties in a bunch sweet heart. And asking questions doesn't make someone a douchebag, avoiding questions due to a deluded sense of entitlement makes one a douche bag. What's good for the goose.... Rangemaster seems to be the only sensible person.

PS: Telling someone to get a life via the internet is nothing more than sociopathic hypocritical advice.
PSS: You used colloquial wrong.

Cheers mate.

@icedemon05lrb I've come from 5 years into the future to tell you that Santa Cruz will become the most famous, fastest bike company in WC Downhill, with the likes of Steve Peat, Greg Minaar, and Josh Bryceland on board...

All our bikes are amazing reflections of superior engineering, testing, and attention to detail. Each bike has different design characteristic, and principles of suspension design. This is why Camp of Champions has so many different choices of bikes in the demo fleet. Our principle ideal is to give riders from all over the world the opportunity to experience as many bikes as we can bring in. Then, sit back, and let the experience speak for itself. We've worked at getting Knolly, Giant, Intense, and Specialized, and it still may happen before camp starts.
I'm convinced that bike companies today that are producing a dedicated DH bike, have done extensive R&D, exhausting test sessions, and in my mind, all are worthy to be World Cup contending bikes on any given day.
We have amazing bikes to offer, from amazing sponsors, and people just like us....that really live to ride bikes.

Well i wish i was coaching for CoC this year Razz these guys are really good at what they do, and everyone should go ride with Mason Razz He has been apperently stolen from us Razz Looking forward to seeing the CoC crew in the park again this year Smile
  • 1 0
Okay sure, but dont you think if he's such a good rider he probably would have any choice of company to ride for? if he left santa cruz, i bet tons of companies would be rushing to sponser him. But, he stays with santa cruz. they definately arent shit bikes. have you ever even owned one? and i say that the v10 is a more reliable bike then a demo or even a glory.
  • 4 0
v10 is a pinner bike. anyone that has ever owned one will say that. i ride a 2010 glory and i miss my v10 on steep rocky trails... icedemon05lrb is just grumpy because he doesnt have a v10....
  • 2 1
The whole point of having this many different bikes is so that if you think a particular bike is a waste of metal you can ride another bike or another bike until you find the bike that you like the best. That is the point of a demo fleet.

ok the morewood and Transition I can see but the v10 and banshee?? WTF? That Spank Tweet is looking fresh!... Why cant they get sponsors like Specialized and Giant? Or even Throw in an intense. They went from Shitty to shit...
  • 13 1
What exactly is wrong with the V10, let alone the Banshee? Do you know something that Steve Peat, Greg Minnaar, or Josh Bryceland don't icedemon05lrb? If so you had better call them up quick and let them know the V10 is shit or else they might do terrible this season......

  • 3 2
We'll have a bunch bikes in every model, and in every size. Basically we have to ensure we have enough bikes so all campers are able to ride one of our bikes, every day we're in the bike park. Stoked you're stoked!
  • 4 1
Sick, my bad sorry I checked your website after commenting and realized you guys weren't doing bottlerockets, wildcards and all those park bikes too. Which quite honestly I find a bit wack....marketing wise the High-end DH bikes are fantastic. but by eliminating the shorter more adaptable rigs, that quite honestly I and others would and HAVE picked over DH sleds from the line-up may have been a mistake because the sleds cost more to build & maintain and don't allow riders to get full benefit of the camp & park.
  • 2 1
Thanks for the feedback dude, it's greatly appreciated. We had had bottlerockets and wildcards for three summers, but the campers always had more interest in the DH whips. So we decided to go with more DJ, hardtails for the airdome and DH for the bikepark. We do actually have a few bottlerockets and wildcards from last summer, so they are available if someone wants to ride them.
  • 3 0
Really eh? thats kind of wacky in my mind but I suppose it makes sense...idk if I was paying upwards of 2G's for a week of awesomeness ide ride the most expensive shit I could. haha

And gotcha, and sick its good that you do have a few left for the weirdos like me! haha
Anywho's congrats with all the new whips, ide be stoked to come and ride one but I can't afford it! (in two senses, cant afford the time off work and cant afford the camp! haha) but im sure it'll be great.

And congrats overall btw, I know I seem to be ripping on you but I do infact support the shit out of you guys....& Endless Biking (for each of your respective camp styles) are the best in operation.
  • 1 0
No worries. We're always stoked to get feedback, positive or negative, as it all helps us improve camp. I rode a Bottlerocket the last two summers in the park, so you're not that weirdWink I'm stoked to get back on a DH whip this summer, Just can't decide which one I want to ride!

Thanks again. If you're ever in Whistler and see our crew in the park, make sure to say hi.
  • 1 0
Sickness and DH whips will always be fun haaha
Will do for sure!

Just out of curiosity, are the campers able to ride different bikes throughout the camp or must they pick one at the beginning?
  • 1 0
Each day begins in the bike room where riders can pick the bike they want to ride for the day. Quick suspension adjustment are made along with lever reach, and brake perch adjustments, and any other cockpit changes needed for individual riding style. We have a very high number of bikes this year to accommodate our growing camper numbers. It's been known to happen that riders of similar weight, and height have swapped bikes mid day.
  • 2 1
o.m.g. what a sick camp...that morewood is insane
  • 1 0
do you have to rent a bike or can you ride your own
  • 1 0
Riding your own is a few hundred cheaper actually. Ride theirs, the insurance is fairly cheap and you wont hammer the shit out of your bike.
  • 1 0
You can bring your own bike and ride it all week. We have a number of campers that do both, after buying the bike insurance. It's an inexpensive way to demo a number of bikes, and compare it to your personal bike.
  • 1 0
