Commencal Absolut Max Max - Atherton Edition

These have just hit the UK shores and are hitting the trails as we speak. No surprise at under £400.00 it's ticking a lot of boxes.

To see how big a bang you get for your bucks, stand back and open with caution..

Available in limited numbers featuring Atherton racing inspired graphics, the ethos around the bike hasn’t changed since the introduction of the original Max Max a few years ago – a tough, affordable and easily upgraded introduction in the world of dirt jumping, I'll even add 4x racing.

photo

This point is emphasized by the use of the exact same 6061 T6 aluminum frame that is featured on all the higher-spec Absolut 1&2 full bikes.

photo

The new frame features arguably the most versatile dropouts on the market, allowing the use of a rear derailleur and pretty much all rear 135mm hub standards on the market (10mm, 12mm, 12mm Maxle or Singlespeed hubs) via the modular hanger/dropout system.

photo

The bike also features Commencal’s new dirt fork which replaces the heavier 5pc fork used in previous year’s models, helping to drop weight.

cheaper version of a 09shonkey if u ask me

Looks very good, love the graphics tup but V-Brakes? Come on guys! At least throw in Disc Brake compatible hubs! An Avid BB5 costs about £15 to buy in bulk! You would need to spend at least another £150 for wheels and Brakes that would be more suitable Frown Other than that, Love it! Big Grin

Apologies, didn’t read that the Hubs were Disc compatible, The images looked otherwise, Still if it comes with Rotor and Calliper mounts, why not fit a basic Disc Brake? So my point still stands Smile

'Hubs: Commencal 6-bolt disc Front & Rear (8/9sp freehub) 14mm nutted.'
The hubs are compatible with discs. I agree though, a set of avid mechanicals would have topped it off to be an unbeatable budget bike.
Colour looks sweet too.

Sorry Beat you to it with the correction, my mistake though. But the point still stands Smile

it's not really cheap. 400 quid is actually pretty up there for a bike without any suspension or even disc brake compatible wheels...

Maybe, accept for the fact that kona is shit and commencal is amazing
  • 3 6
he is saying gay alum because it has a rigid fork on it, quite dumb if u ask me (rigid for on alum fram)
  • 17 5
kona isn't shit. yeah i ride one, but if you think of it, i would say kona has more expertise in making a jump/street bike. They have 6 TOP riders on there clump team. Legends, newcomers, and some wild spanish kid (andreu) who all give feed back on their slope, street, and jump bikes, to have them refined to the best possible angles, geo, material, and funtionalliy possible. Yeah maybe commencial has somthing on them for DH, but deffinitly not on DJ/SS. Which this hardtail would be consitered.
  • 8 3
really, i say fuck kona haters
  • 3 1
do i see pegable mountain bike?!
  • 6 5
I disagree. Pro's are there for publicity. They do help refine geometry a bit, but its almost entirely in the hands of designers. And I think Kona's designers have been asleep on the job for the last several years.
Kona's bikes have hardly changed in the last decade. For DJ, they have got boring bikes that look the same way they did 5 years ago. They are not at all innovative (case in point: DOPE System). I know that if you have a good design you should stick with it, but you have to evolve with the sport. And in my mind, one new bike (the Bass) doesn't cut it.
  • 5 5
 fuck kona haters
  • 4 2
mason kona.... the words kona and street shouldnt go together! who rides street on a kona?! ha!
  • 2 0
i think part of the kona hating is that, they have a reputation for snapping at the headtube. because people fit them with a long-ass fork and expect it not to break. correct me if im wrong.
  • 2 0
 DJPrOdigy well put my friend...

kona's shonky, and shonky inc is an amazing frame. It basically has all the same feautures, and geo as a black market mob. and for dmrchris, many people ride the shonky for street. Take when goss for example. He is on the kona shonky inc frame, made from reynolds cromo, and he seems to be doing just find on it. Andreu lacondeguy has his own frame on production now, the lacondeguy. The frame is very similar to the shonky inc, but it however does not have the internal campy 45/45 style headset. The geometry on it is amazing, both for street, and dj. I beleive that the kona bass (former cowan ds) and the new bass design (different tubing/more room for bigger crowns) is a proven SS machine, it has won crankworks multiple times, and is a multi-venue bike, used for FR, SS, Steet, and DJ. If you watch the Dr. Dew files episode on konaworld about the Cowan frame, it explains what i mean by rider input. It isnt an act there putting on by the way...

  • 2 0
and i would say the designers have been quite awake, look at 06/07 stuff, compair it to 2010 stuff. Much nicer in design. Yeah same 4 bar linkage design on the DS bikes.. but its a good proven design.
  • 2 1
alu street frames break so often which is why you only get steel bmx frames for street dirt ect and it just doesnt feel nice at all compared to steel theres not enough flex. this bike isnt for the serious rider... and they have been making peg-able mtb's for years
  • 1 0
yeah they have been making pegable mtbs for years but not as much so as non-pegable its nice to see one getting some publicity as for the aluminum/ steel debate do you really feel the difference in the frame flexxing when you land something in the street? im gonna have to say no... if anything thats your knees/ tire your feeling
  • 1 0
in the first place konas are gay i have an 06 scrap and im still riding it. the geometry is screwed up but i would say its bin prety dependable ive bin riding it for 4 years and it hasnt broke yet and i ride street, djs, park and prety much everything
  • 1 0
you dont feel it when you land something because that would just be worrying. dont insult your kona because it my decide to snap next time you ride it
  • 2 1
exactly you dont feel the flex of a frame... the miniscule amount if any that it does... so why does a more flexy or less flexy frame matter, ok the more flexy can take more because it wont put all the stress on the welds... but o well even with a stiff ass frame if you break a weld you aint riding right lol, im not arguing im just curious if there is any real reason besides that someone cares about flex in a frame so much when they really shouldnt
  • 7 0
I want!!! would be a great bike to buy and upgrade as u improve Smile
very nice looking frame!!
  • 1 0
thats what im thinking of doing... buying it then just upgrading it and stuff. there great bikes for turing into customs withought the hassive price of a fully custom
  • 1 0
aye - that's what I did. First to go were the forks. But mines not the Atherton one, that ones too expensive !! Mine was only £200 (new) via ebay.
  • 4 0
Am i the only one that noticed the holes for the front disc mounts weren't even drilled? and i guess they though most people just get rid of the front brake any way so why put a good one one the front. i dont under stand the rear break though. oh well its a bike for a begginer to build up, cant complain really.
  • 11 5
why does commencal put the little atherton logo on it even though none of the athertons ride that bike?
  • 20 1
 cause its the atherton edition..
  • 5 5
wow thats nice and its probebly because they ride for them and im sure they do have one tup
  • 6 0
To sell more bikes, Majority of people think 'Oh atherton edition, got to be good' etc Wink
  • 4 0
yeah its all marketing. like if nike made another jordan. that shoe would get a hell of a lot more sales then it would if it didnt have jordans name on it
  • 1 1
yer but guys they put the atherton logo on it cus its like a limited edition and athertons ride for them and are recognised through out the UK and its like either call it atherton edit or just some random like Maxmax limited edition.
  • 1 0
like i said, all marketing. the reason its an atherton edition and not just a limited edition is because they know they would make more sales if it had the name of 3 world class athletes on it instead of just some "limited edition" model
  • 1 0
Anyone else thinking this is better but for a lowe price ?? www.freeflowbikes.com/2011-commencal-absolut-maxmax-psr.html?___store=default
  • 1 0
I got my non-Atherton cash cow version for £200 via ebay brand new. But mine is a rather pleasant orange. See my profile !!
  • 5 2
looks good. but why would there be an Atherton Max Max. Dan wouldn't race this or ride it. I fail to see why an entry level bike for dj and street is marketed for a race team? seems like comencial is reaching for max max sales
  • 4 2
 Its Rachels Pumptrack training bike......LOL
  • 3 1
not that tight..... I wouldn't want to buy a bike knowing its cost efficient and light weight. I want to buy a bike that I know has has been designed and built to live up to maximum potential. It doesn't look like anyone put a whole lot of thought into this bike. It has a cool paint job and fills a gap in the market. cool....
  • 2 0
Commencal this, commencal that but in the end...
Look the bike has nice features!
The 1st:
It's totally lightweight!
The 2nd:
The hub's are disc compatible, and yes it was better if the disc brakes come, but as they say(commencal), this is supposed to be a cheap bike, so you can adventure yourself and upgrade it as you would like!
The 3rd:
You were talkin about the wheels, but i have to say! They are really good! I only do street, and for a 400 price bike is excellent!
I have tried kona, specialized, black market... and actually with the MAXMAX equipped with the same material i had no difference! Only one thing! The weight was totally cool! Much lightyear!
  • 4 0
they put atherton on the bike for marketing
  • 2 2
The brakes a let down, but then again for £400 RRP (so it may be sold cheaper in the shops) its a very good price for younger riders who ride small local trails and jumps. Its obvoiusly not aimed at the older rider with blue graphics and a name like the "max max". For the price and target market i think its perfect.

I wouldnt be seen dead with one though Big Grin
  • 1 0
i would rather get the 09 one for less than 300 if its only a starter bike cuz they are basicly the same bike
  • 3 0
whats funny is that im sure this is the furthest thing from the athertons's spec.
  • 1 0
yeah it isn't even ti... Rolleyes

modular dropouts on FRAMES less than 400 quid are rare and seeing as all the parts apart from the frame are basically designed to be replaced its a pretty damn good deal. also the white rigid fork will be pretty easy to sell on to some trend whore kid and you could buy a decent second hand sus fork for it with the money.
  • 1 1
I guess if you ride brakeless and add a real fork it's kind of ok........ but why put the Athertons graphics on it? People who want to get into riding will have never heard of the name....... I respected Gee for the ad about cancer but this is kind of unnecessary...
  • 1 0
WTF it looks weird... rigid+alu so bad.. and those rims are too narrow!!!
It's ugly and even the Athertons sticker can't help.
  • 3 0
not a fan... and pad brakes wtf???
  • 2 1
 all brakes have pads
  • 5 2
 I think it's B-E-A-Utiful.
  • 3 0
the parts don't match the name of the bike. total marketing heist!!!
  • 1 0
can anyone tell me if i could fit quick release thingys on the wheels instead of bolt ones? they are extremely annoying Razz
  • 1 0
i know it says it's sold in the UK, but does anyone know if they will be sold in canada or if they are already?
  • 1 0
commencal is being pulled from the canadian dealers this year... not exactly sure why, but two dealers have told me this, so the warranty might be an issue if you get your hands on one.
  • 1 0
wow that sucks. this bike would be perfect for beginning riders like myself to start with and progressively enhance it. i know there are other bikes out there that are like this but, this one is so nice lol
  • 2 0
The seatpost seems to come from Max Commencal grandma's bicycle.
  • 1 0
aha yes, i was about to say, they def saved money with that seatpost
  • 1 0
yeah for real, it's circa 1999 =( still a sweeet ride though.
  • 1 0
i like blue. bikes are neat. yall are fucktards. all ya'll. me too come to think of it.
  • 1 0
 now thats a propper ride...
  • 1 0
Too expensive. My max max costs less than the fork on this bike. I have a mortgage to pay for after all.
  • 2 0
 £350 i would shame..
  • 1 0
i like it better than last years maxmax. the derailleur option is nice
  • 1 0
put real dj forks on it and it would be alot better but still pretty sick
  • 1 0
wtf with the v-brakes? the bike is beauty but the brakes make it look odd.
  • 1 0
 24" version would be good.
  • 1 0
it would be a good business if they just sell the frame at a low price
  • 1 1
i got a older dmr drone that looks and probly works the exact same as that, and more than half the price....
  • 1 0
isn't a drone steel..not the same. I would break this.
  • 1 0
ye they are, can sure take a beating even a 6 n half foot fat man yumping a 5 step haha
  • 1 0
 Love the frame!
  • 1 0
 rim brakes? wtf?
  • 1 0
 Weight?
  • 1 1
this wont sell, not when DMR have the 2010 drones out.
  • 3 3
 niiice Smile
  • 2 3
just shit XD no for street no for dirt only for stay in shop XD
  • 1 2
 junk.
  • 2 5
drop outs look coool but the forks look like they will definately bend.
  • 1 3
 cool
  • 1 2
they totaly aint the lighting lol,
  • 3 0
Apologies, didn’t read that, Still if it comes with Rotor and Calliper mounts, why not fit a basic Disc Brake? So my point still stands Smile
  • 4 0
i supose your right mate, maybe they wanted to keep it as cheap to buy as possible, saying that, my old blue stp was 380 and it was so similar to this but it had hayes mx4 brakes
