Kokanee Crankworx Announces 2008 Slopestyle Invitee's

Apr 26, 2008
by Jordan Holmes
World’s best freeride mountain bikers to compete for over $27,500 in Slopestyle and new VW Trick Showdown!

After months of deliberation, the Kokanee Crankworx organizing committee is excited to announce a stacked list of invited riders for the all-new VW Trick Showdown and the ever-popular Slopestyle @ Kokanee Crankworx, taking place Thursday, August 14 and Saturday, August 16, 2008 respectively. The Slopestyle will be broadcast via live webcast on www.crankworx.com.“The popularity of slopestyle riding continues to grow and we are seeing an unprecedented number of professional athletes putting everything on the line to compete in this exciting sport,” comments Jeremy Roche, Kokanee Crankworx General Manager. “We made the decision this year to move to an invitational format for the Slopestyle contest, ensuring that the very best of the best will be here in Whistler to compete.”

The invitation list, comprised of 30 of the world’s best riders, was compiled based on past results from key contests in North America and Europe over the last three years. Contests include Kokanee Crankworx, Crankworx Colorado, The BearClaw Invitational and two European competitions. Two wild card spots were included and four spots, open to winners of upcoming events in Canada, the USA and Europe, are being reserved.

“We worked hard to create a fair process that rewards top performances on the international slopestyle event circuit, and provides opportunities through the wildcard spots for stars who, for various reasons, may not have achieved the necessary results,” elaborates Roche.

Thirty athletes will receive invitations to compete in these two events during the nine-day Festival. The VW Trick Showdown is a new rider-judged contest where riders will “session” two features within the Slopestyle course and be judged by their peers. The Slopestyle @ Kokanee Crankworx will once again take the Festival headliner spot on Saturday evening, and will follow a new format this year which will ensure an even more exciting spectator event. All 30 athletes will have two qualifying runs with the top 15 riders advancing to the finals immediately following. The drama will then intensify as the top 15 riders each take one run, in reverse order, to claim victory and the 2008 Slopestyle @ Kokanee Crankworx title.

The following athletes are invited to the 2008 Slopestyle @ Kokanee Crankworx and VW Trick Showdown. This list, in alphabetical order, includes the two wildcard entries:

I think it is a real shame that it no longer opens many doors to young rippers who could show a lot of the listed riders a thing or two... just imagibe if it was this way a few years back when an unknown rider called Paul Basagoita decided to try his luck... This competition has just become yet another marketing tool for the big companies.
  • 10 1
 That is a good point...
  • 9 1
This guy is right, theirs alot of unknowns out there that really kill it.
  • 4 0
but there is many more competitions now a days, many of them being open to all. if the "unknown rider" attends these kind of competitions and does good, he is bound to get noticed eventually.

by the way, Paul will be taking first place. Razz

Yeah, but I was there when it was an open format at it's overloaded with kids who can do an x-up just entering because it's fun to tell your friends you were in Crankworks. I agree that there is alot of kids who shred out there, but at the same time the jumps and drops in the Boneyard are huge and people were getting hurt. Young guys were trying things way outside their league with the hopes of a shot at the superfinals. Maybe the could hold a qualifing series or something to let Ams in but to show up at Crankworks and see 150 kids eat it on the big jumps is REALLY boring. We all go to see Paul and Cam and Darren anyway right? (and yes I know there are others we go to see...)

there is an open, there are 4 spots from a qualifying round.
  • 0 0
raceface is right, and thats why they aren't making it open like it used to be. the open spots will hopefully go to some unknown names who deserve to be in it.

bas boyko and mccaul, im not sure on the order
  • 5 2
i'm not a fan of paul b, hes too cocky. but i do have to agree that hes crazy good
  • 0 0
Cam McCaul Paul Bas Brendon Semenuk Ryder Kasprick and greg watts there should have a similar podium they should invite Brian Miller From Nor-Cal
  • 3 0
it kinda sucks that it's not an ivatational anymore but there are still those 4 wild card spots and besides, crankworks is more or less the biggest thing in free-ride... thats liek letting random people play in teh superbowl or the stanely cup finals........... it'd be cool buuuuuut
  • 1 0
yea thats a good way of putting it, yea there are some good guys out there but you kinda need to prove your self fist...
  • 6 1
i hope agassiz gets in one of those open spots.... It's gonna be..... Kasprick Berrecloth Boyko
  • 1 0
 yeah aggy
  • 2 0
IMHO, the only reason why Boyko won last year was because the course was so fricken terrible. His run was a very long way from special - he dabbed a tailwhip, threw down two nice 360s and a no-foot can. It was the worst run to have won a major slopestyle competition, and it was because there was no flow and you had to pedal a hundred metres between each hit. The same might go for Andreu - but I'm betting for a restoration of McCaul as a dominant force this year. It would be nice to see Berrecloth win it after such a hard time last year.
  • 7 2
 They should invite sam pilgrim.
  • 1 0
I seriously want mccaul or bearclaw to win this year, those guys are the ones pushing the sport to new heights every day, and how the hel didnt bearclaw win the 05 crankworks, paul b was good but bearclaw threw down the 360 road gap, nothing like that had ever been done before
  • 1 0
but all he can do is dirt jumps, yeah he has a bag full of trick balls deep but all he does is the dirt jumps. if you ask me slopestyle is heading way too much towards dirt jumping and not following its roots. keep the mountains in mountain biking. i would love to see more big hucks that could be tricked like bearclaws road gap
  • 2 1
berrecloth is gunna have to step up his gma eif he thinks hes gunna have a chance at getting put on that podium, the newer and younger riders are gunna whip hiw ass for sure..also. i think he should lern a flip or two.. just sayin
  • 0 0
 game* his*
  • 5 1
 Cameron McCaul=1st
  • 1 0
yeah mccauls the best, plus hes been training harder
  • 1 0
this was hard but im gonna have to say 1st- Cam McCaul 2nd- Darren Berrecloth 3rd-this ones hard, i have to say paul b. what's the deal with nate adams, isnt he fmx, i heard he mtb but i didnt know he was crankworx worthy
  • 2 2
 kk
you guy's sound pretty close but this is how it gonna turn out

1)chubley
2)ben boyko
3)Alex Pro cause he's gonna have improved so much
4)cam mccaul cause he's gonna push the envelope to hard but I mean he has to probly one or the best riders and he's necer got 1st
5) andreu L - he's good a big dj but slopestyle is just not his forte

and theres the top five

and I think that the fact thats it's invite only is BULLSHIT who cares if it's boring to watch guys who can't do anything don't watch qualifying then. you can't say someones the slopestyle champion of the world if you don't let everyone try to win. This is just a way for a big corporite a*shole to make more money by only putting big names in.

P.S. crankworks is the shit but if it turns into a big money deal and ceeps sliding down that hill It's gonna be so gay
  • 0 1
how is Lacondeguy not a slopestyle guy? He got second last year and has won other events too. 2 Years in a row he finished qualifiers in first place... how is this not his forte? And everyone is elegible for Crankworks, you just have to win other events to snag a wildcard spot... There's no Ams in the Bearclaw Invitational and nobody's bitching about that...
  • 1 1
 Lacondeguy
McCaul
and Bearclaw if he steps his game up this year but Lacondeguy deff is taking first this year with the doub flip and the super flip the kid is just bringing a hole new leave to freeride/slope style its nuts
  • 2 0
has enyone els noticd that andrue can do big tricks but he dosent do em with flow and style?
  • 0 0
He does them with the best flow and style... if you ask me Boyko looks like hes barely hanging on most of the time...
  • 0 1
i think having an invite list is retarded. they should have 15 open seats and a prior comp to see who should get them. i mean having the same riders going at it time and time again is cool and all but its not gona push the sport if there isnt any new shreders introduced to the public. and i also think there should be bigger hucks to make it more versitile for all riders not just dirt jumpers. here's how i c it going down.

andreu
alex pro
semenuk
mccaul (just because he always comes in 4th)
boyko
  • 4 2
andreu lacondeguy is the craziest rider out there but im not sure,, looks like its gonna be tight
  • 1 1
id have to say that sounds about acurate. exept im guessing ben boyko will be the on in second... chase has hurt himself to much over the last year and i think his carrer is starting to wined down...
  • 0 0
I can't believe you are all not picking Alex Pro, this guy gets 5th last year, at only 15! Think about the growth this guy has seen in one season since last year, he will be top 3 hands down!
  • 0 0
dude, who cares if andreu doesnt do shit off the drop, he busts hein tricks off the dirtjumps, and mite do something off the drop, and i doubt any of u would hit that drop anyways
  • 0 0
plus you know backflipping the huge stepdown wasn't, you know... CRAZY!!! *rolls eyes*
  • 0 1
I think they should have a way around the big drop at the end for riders like Andreu who aren't very fond of hitting big drops and are more about the jumps. the riders should have a choice between the drop and a booter, that way there wont be as many falls as last year, and more tricks.
  • 1 0
i think logan peat should be in there i think he has a good chance to take it all or be in top 3
  • 0 0
 yea man logan is sick
  • 0 0

Im heading over to try and enter its gunna be hard but iv got a good chance even tho i am from new zealand
  • 1 1
there is going to be no final drop this year. they are doing a fruit bowl at the end instead. too many riders hate and complain about the big drop
  • 0 0
i dont think chase is gonna do as well as everyone says but who knows all these guys throw down sum seriious talent it wud be hard to pin down an honest top 3

WHAT THE FUCK why is there only 4 open seats like honestly the only reason paul bas is riding for any of his sponsers or in new world disorder is because ofhaving open non invite seats in the comp this is goona suck if its only riders that we all know what they can do are riding get new talent
  • 5 0
yea man i agree the sport isn't going to progress like this.
  • 0 3
yeah realy i wanted to start trying in crank works this year and now i cant it suckss
  • 1 0
actually, cam zink had Utopia vouch for him after the 04' sea otter classic DJ comp. but yeah, they should have it to at least 20 open or qualifications a couple days earlier in a separate contest.
  • 0 0
wasnt the year Bas won an invite only year like Mtbike1 said he got vouched for by some big names to get in
  • 0 0
it was decline and yes and becuase of that they opened it now its invite again
  • 4 6
 Boyko defends A-Lac Paul Bas
  • 2 3
 i say mccaul a l chase
  • 1 4
botko is gunna win i say pullin a decad whip then lacondgue then i have no idea
  • 1 0
whats a decade whip? you either do a decade or a downside whip.
its kinda stupid that its not Open this year. i thought the Crankworx slopestyle was to help other riders get out there as well as be a super sick event. they really need a seperate section for younger riders just to qualify them for the main event (and have more than 4 open spots).
i know a few riders going over to Whistler for crankworx and a big riding holiday (Brett Frew and Kelly McGarry, not sure if they were planning on riding the slopestyle but Kelly could do pretty well this year. you might remember him from the NWD 7 slopestyle section where they only showed him crashing). i dont think it'l be as good with just the big guys in there this year
