Practice Photo Report: US Open of MTB 2018

Established in 2003 and featuring a unique and open format, the US Open has always aimed to offer one of the most challenging and competitive races in the United States. With the idea that allowing anyone who dares to step up to go toe to toe in the pro ranks, the race can be a proving ground for both up-and-coming talent and elite racers alike. Anyone can enter the Open Class and compete amongst the pros for the cash purse and a chance to prove where they rank. And unlike the World Cup circuit, there is still a place for amateurs race where they can compete in their own category for both bragging rights and some of the best prizes in racing.

Originally and traditionally hosted at the Mountain Creek Bike Park in New Jersey, 2018 marks a step in a new direction as the event partners for the first time with the Killington Resort a few hundred miles up the road in Vermont. Killington Resort has made significant investments in recent years to build a world-class bike park and galvanize the region as a mountain bike destination, and with the addition of the US Open, their quiver of trails just got even better. A purpose built DH track has been freshly constructed from the top of the gondola station with a mix of steep chutes, open grass corners, and some fresh cut technical woods that the New England region is famous for. At a time when most DH tracks remain unchanged year in and year out, or at best offer one or two new sections, the near two-mile long track for the US Open is a treat. Nearly the entire track is being ridden and raced for the first time just for this event, and there are more fresh loamy stretches of trail than anything seen in quite some time on an international stage. Add in a Kids' Open Grom Bomb DH event, an Adaptive DH, and a best whip comp immediately following the downhill finals and you have one heck of an event on tap.

While the racing officially gets underway over the weekend, racers have been on track the past few days getting up to speed, cutting in ruts, and spraying loam all over the mountain. And if you like your DH served fresh and raw this is certainly an event just for you.

I’d love to see that. It’d be a perfect venue before or after Mont Saint Anne.

I wish, but not likely. From what I recall Windham NY is back on the schedule for 2019 though.

Windham in a shorter track but way steeper and loads more jumps. Your struggling to find air time at Killington summer or winter. Its not that the potential insin't their, for some reason that has us long time local's scratching our heads, they refuse to cutt lines through certain areas.

@OffTrackBouncer: I'm not 100 percent sure that's accurate, at least in regards to this new race course. I've ridden parts of the new US Open course over the last 3 weeks and it's got some big boosters, there's plenty of steep sections (immediately out of the start under the gondola yikes! ????), and its got to be near double the length and vert of Windham WC. Having raced on the Windham track, watched a few WCs @windham, I'd much rather see it at Killington for a number of reasons. Still enjoy Windham, but Killingtons new track is blisteringly hot!

@sambs827: Where did you see that announced? I know they are looking at some additional U.S. venues but I thought more out west.

YES PLEASE! right? it would be the perfect place for a WC race. They have the mountain, the facilities and the bars. We went to a World Cup at Windham a few years ago and it was awesome but not as many people as I expected. We were there just for the day too. I would rather stay for a few days. If the World Cup was at Killington they could still have a lot of trails open to the public that wouldn't interfere with the race course.

How can we get the people at Killington to want to host a World Cup?

@Buzzyny: Have been going to Killington since I was 4 years old skiing and mountain biking since I was 12. If there is a drop off there I know about it but they are few and far between, I don't count the closed ski lifts as drops. Windham and anywhere else in the Catskills your finding natural drops everywhere. I guess some people are into man made cozy bloopper drops hahahah.

@Clarkeh: it's got a fire road section lol
  • 2 1
@yzedf: Oh good! It's back on the cards then haha

@Buzzyny: Honestly they have mega potential at Killy but the trails are already cut for MTB and Ski seasons. When I tell you I know every rock and root there would be an understatement. Hopefully they get with it, but VT tends to be more about flow and environment than building critical double diamond terrain. If they could pour some money into Smugglers Notch thing's would get very interesting. That's the only spot in VT that presents challenges similar to BC, Jay has some I guess if the conditions are right. Honestley I've never seen 40 foot hucks anywhere on the NE other than the Catskill region.

@yzedf: Man that's what I've heard, need to bite the 16 hour drive and do it. Ski season also, been on my list but that's like driving to Florida for me.
  • 1 0
@OffTrackBouncer: oh damn! Don't take my comments as saying it's worth a 16 hour drive. If you're going to take a week off and do a tour of the northeast then I would go. Here's the entrance to one of the double black trails... youtu.be/wRAdOb0-wh8

@yzedf: It's btw 12-16 hours depending on stops, weather, and how clean you can get out of the city. Have been wanting to ski there for decades. My friends loved it there, can only imagine the MTB riding. That's really the only spot left for me to check out and on my bucket list. Thanks for the link.

I'm rooting for George Ryan....and Neko. George is on the trail crew at Mountain Creek Bike Park and keeps that place running fine. I love that course too. It's old skool northeast style natural terrain. I remember racing the NORBA Nationals back in late 90s and early 2000s at places like Mtn. Snow and also some of the local series races. That's when they would just throw some tape up between trees ad call it a trail. There was no such thing as a trail crew or even trail work, It was run it as it was it, or something like that.

George Ryan... stoked to hear Muffin is still pinned.

I was really hoping to be there this year but just couldn’t make it. My family and I had a great time last year at the US open. I’ll be there next year for sure. This is such a fantastically rad event. Well run and well done.

Going to be there in a couple weeks, hopefully I'll be able to ride it then!

You will love it there. Especially in the fall when it's not so dry. I think MCBP is one of the best parks on the east coast. They put a ton of work into the trails and there is something for everyone and every riding style.
