This weekend saw hundreds of female downhill mountain bikers descend on Melmerby in Cumbria, as they prepared over a full weekend to out-ride the fastest female downhill racer in the world – Rachel Atherton. Set against the stunning backdrop of Melmerby Scar, over 200 female competitors rubbed shoulders with the reigning world champion following her ‘perfect season’ in a bid to avoid getting caught, as they gave it absolutely everything in a memorable chase.
Riders soaked up stunning views across the Eden Valley before descending a challenging 2.04km course, where Rosie Holdsworth emerged victorious in a closely contested final chase. After a blistering run, Rosie told us: “It was absolutely fantastic, an absolutely brilliant race. It was so much fun, such a good atmosphere.” Telling us about the course she said, “It was a really amazing course, tight in sections, pedally at the top, with lots of nice obstacles, and then I just tried to keep off the brakes and keep it lit for the rest of it.”
Rachel herself was on a stormer, taking to the Pennine Scar track in a blistering run, which saw her weave through hundreds of enthusiastic riders. Despite a puncture earlier in the race Rachel finished in style and told us, “It was absolutely amazing! I got a puncture right at the start, but I knew I had to carry on – this is Red Bull Foxhunt! I was right in the middle of everybody and passing them. I had to really think and use my head to get past people”.
Giving fellow riders a glimpse of what it takes to be a world champion, Rachel stepped off the track at Red Bull Foxhunt after a whirlwind season, saying “It was so cool watching the women riding down. It was amazing, everyone cheering at the finish. I just want to go and do it again.”
