The Art of Flight - 26 Whips, 26 Ways

Jun 25, 2016
by Simon Nieborak
Of all the contests that define Crankworx, the whip-off deservedly claims a special place uniting athletes of all walks and disciplines. Swapping the high stakes and stressful arenas of slopestyle and downhill, the whip-off gives riders the opportunity to let off some steam and put a show on for the fans. The chilled 'jump jam' vibe and the high octane atmosphere of riders pushing the boundaries of how far they can whip out their bikes and get them back to terra firma is one that's not only simple to watch, but easy to get stoked on. With that in mind, lets take a look at 26 of the raddest whips from Crankworx, Les Gets, 2016...

I like the one with the whip.

Awesome shots as always dude! Nice to see them done a little different, too! All that mud definitely adds to shots like this

In these pics soderstrom is the nicest. In my opinion.

Yeah he has this steeze nobody else got
  • 3 2
Yeah looks like he s posing with his bike on solid ground

Elliot Jackson throws down some of the sickest moto style whips out there and the shot they got of him says it all!!!
  • 6 0
Second. Elliot has Bruce Lee level whips.

 Elliot's whip is absolutely filthy.

So I'm trying to break these into different categories. You've got the outside foot towards the front wheel versus rear wheel (with a few in between at angles). You've got knees parallel versus twisted. Then you've got Elliot Jackson style with totally straight legs verses the more common bent knees. I tend to label moto style whips with outside foot towards the rear wheel, arms a little straighter, and knees parallel and not too bent for that extra extension of the bike away from the rider. I like to think the non-moto, pedal bike style is outside foot forward, knees twisted and bent, arms up and pulled in, bringing the bike in closer. My favorite moto style whip in these shots is actually GT rider Brook MacDonald, shot number 14. I just like the way his outside arm is straight out and locked, knees partly bent and parallel, good extension. My favorite pedal bike whip is #15 Lacondeguy and #20 (insert name here please).

Woah... and it's Lemoine at 20. Mitch ropo has the most stylish looking whip for me from photos but Rdog has that smooth motion when he pulls it back in.

Where are the enduro specific 27.5 whips?
  • 7 0
Right after the metric whip event.

So I consulted my local grumpy dood - "NacNac's....are not whips. Furthermore.....if you land completely sideways, it's not a whip.... just a glorified kick out". He said in nearly the same breath..."No wonder BMXr's think we're goons" Too funny

Nac nac .. Who's there Jermey McGrath
  • 7 0
Seems as though Elliot Jackson's flat/sideways° ratio is more than all of the others.

Soderstrom all day!!! moto whips are banging but... Soderstrom looks like he could be standing in the ground its inch perfect.

Some great shots. It's interesting how the same move can be pulled off in so many different ways. I do wish that PB would hire a proof reader though sometimes!

PB is an international website. Some people have to use translate. How do you think they feel?

Im not even gernan and read german mtb site news and development. I have to use translate on those, and i dont complain.

There are other sites that are more prone to english only users. However, they have no where near the international coverage of PB.

@XCMark: when i originally commented on this article the write up was totally different. I kind of wish whoever changed it had deleted my comment as it's made me look like a grammar nazi! I still stand by the bit where I said the photos were great!! :-)
