Lifting the bar for how all future Slopestyle contests were judged, The Claw's massive 360 drop over the 60-foot step-down gap during his run on the 2005 Crankworx Whistler Slopestyle course was a thing to behold and even to this day, the massive sender would score top marks at any slopestyle competition.
It was nuts to see this in person back then. I can’t believe that was 13 years ago! I wish slopestyle contests had a bit more flavor like back then. It’s sort of turned into figure skating now. Regular 360, opposite 360, bar spin, backflip bar spin, tucked no hander to bar spin, triple tail whip, blah blah blah. When Anthony Messere rolled in to crankwork in 2011 throwing massive airs with style, I thought that might bring some style back into the mix. Don’t get me wrong, Semenuk is an amazing artist on 2 Wheels , but besides that I’d rather watch big mountain riding or rampage any day
That was the sickest bike of it's time. Super stout frame, coil shock, 160mm travel, 66 or so degree head angle and some short chainstays. I always wanted that blue one he had, but ended up with the green and black one. I had a 180mm fork on it and slacked it out a bit. What a fun bike. Kind of funny that geometry has finally caught up to what we were doing 13 years ago.
Incredible watching that in 2005! I wish Whistler still had a few course features open to the public. The teeter totter and the Giro trailer and the camo box and the massive wall ride! Ahh such good memories!
Amazing, a defining move in the freeride and slopestyle scene. But why exaggerate how great it is? : That roadgap was never close to 60ft down or across.
