sorry but most of you are just talking out of your ass.......the part that was removed was purely to add strength to the seat tube which is now short enough to not need it anyway...the area that was patched up is now in fact stronger with the welds than it was hollow. this is one thing i love about this forum its full of so much haters that think they know it all but in reality wouldnt even have the foresight to even think of mod's like this.
Im glad your not listening to most of these people mate as an engineer you have my up most respect for coming up with that idea and personally i think its a design they should have came up with in the first place. If i had the money i would have it straight off you without question Smile

 i like the bike Smile
  • 4 2
Finally someone with sense!! your not gonna remove part of your frame unless your sure about it, youre not gonna risk yourself for the sake of cutting a bit of metal!! it looks sick. some people on pinkbike just need to get a bit of sense and look at the details.
  • 1 1
Shut up haters. This bike looks totally pro Smile Nice job man Big Grin
  • 6 0
aint anyone noticed that the frame has been cut look at the seat tube and how low it is there is meant to be a brace there like this one

iv called giant and tey have said it will not dammage the strenth atall, and im my opion i think it looks better as a slopey Smile
  • 1 0
sorry i meant in a nice way i know it didnt sound like it i agree with you totally looks awesome i was just shocked to see it done
  • 2 1
If giant thought it was a good idea they would have cut it off in the beginning and stuck a lifetime warranty on it
  • 2 0
I that if a bike looks absolutely matched and minted, it either means the rider has too much money or actually rides properly, every bike looks a but battered after a while, and I agree, it does look better as a slopestyle, and I doubt the frame is very weakened by it!! I wish I had £600!! :-) I'de be there!! :-)
  • 3 0
Sorry, I meant doesn't ride it properly, and a bit battered (stupid iPhone auto-correct!!)
  • 1 0
finaly someone who understands bikes Smile
  • 1 1
Not sure how you can call that a modification? All you have done is cut a bit off the frame.
And weirdly if its such a good and acceptable mod why haven't you added a single close up of it to show us all what a good job you've done?
  • 2 2
Chopping that gusset out of the frame will massively weaken it. It effects a lot more than the seat tube. It shortens the effective length of the top tube for stress loading, it stiffens the seat tube / top tube joint both above & below the top tube & gives the frame a lot of it's lateral stiffness. I am a design engineer (Meng) and spend most days calculating stresses & failure loadings & that frame has been massively weakened. Giant would be stupid to even comment on such a mod and I very much doubt that they did.
If you want to build a Giant full sus slopestyle bike then start with a Trance like the Giant team freeriders do.
  • 3 0
pretty smart slope bike if im honest.
  • 1 0
dont know much bout freeride/downhill but recon this is worth closer to 1000 than 800
  • 1 0
Smile i had a dj and i loveds it to bit but im short for cash atm and i need a 125 to bget to collage ect, so i put it up for cheap so i could get rid of it :/ i dont want to but :/ anyways if your offering ill take 1000 Smile
  • 6 2
 800 is steep nevermind 1000...
  • 1 0
what you mean its steep.... look at the spec and think again.
  • 16 2
old frame, crap shock, odd wheels, butchered frame and everything else is mediocre at best
  • 3 1
i agree with you that the rear sus aint the best but the pikes are amazing, in my opion the fame is aa beast, giant say its fine to use and there will be no dammage to the strenth of the frame, and the frame looks better, the hayes brake is brand new and is the best brake i have ever owned, i prefer is to my old hope mini, cranks are amazingly strong and pedals are okay, they are new and dod the job well for a cheap set of pedals and odd wheels.... who really gives a f*ck?
  • 7 0
I really doubt you've called Giant and they've given it the okay.

I'd say it looks alright to use, But I really can't imagine a company giving the okay to a frame that's had about 10% of it chopped off.
  • 3 2
well id you dont belive me.... i dont care, i know i have called them, they said its fine, i think its fine so to me, the bike fine Smile
  • 2 0
If you dont mind me asking, what exactly did giant say about the hole in the top-tube? as i can't imagine that reducing the length of the seat tube would affect strength.
Cheers.
  • 2 0
I'm not saying it's reduced the strength. I'm saying that I doubt giant approves of someone modifying their frame to this extent.
  • 1 0
they didnt aprove. they didnt disaprove, all they said that it would affect the streth of the frame Smile
  • 1 0
it looks pretty cool i must admit, but its a pretty bad idea, now that you dont have that part of seat tubing the rear wheel will hit off the saddle like you said you have already done and you said that pumping up the rear shock stopped it from happening, but id rather have a bike where i dont have to worry about the rear wheel hitting the saddle every time i take a hard hit, seems to me that its a bad idea.
  • 2 1
 Raise the saddle a little?
  • 3 0
if your raising the saddle then you would be aswell keeping the frame the way it was -^
  • 1 0
The brace on the frame is usually about 60-70mm tall, making the seat only able to be lowered to 60-70mm above this, so by cutting the brace off and the seat tube down, you would be able to drop it lower, and if you would need to, raise it up, but to perhaps a little lower than the previous 60mm minimum height.
  • 1 0
you could do that but you wont be able to lower the saddle with the seat tube gone enough to make the whole thing worth while.
  • 1 0
I'm on about raising the seat, not lowering it further.
  • 3 0
i know, if you want the seat to be raised to a point in which you dont have to worry about the saddle hitting it (which personally i would) then the amount that you raise it will not be much lower than the amount it would have been if all of the seat tube was still there. So yea it looks bloody good but the frame was designed the way it was because thats when it works best. and i personally dont believe that giant has been phoned, maybe your local giant dealership but the person that has told you it woulld be okay is obviously not the person you are supposed to ask, if you asked the designer it would be a big no.
  • 2 0
 couldn't agree more
  • 2 0
sorry if you guys dont aprove of my bike, i had a vision and i tried to create it, to me it turned out better that i expected, so im happy and i dont give a shit what you guys think.
  • 1 0
its not that i dont approve, its your bike man do what you want, im just saying what i think and stating the facts.
  • 1 0
and now the seat is lower it suits my riding style, i like djs, so shorter seat is better im my opion Smile
  • 1 0
if your into dj's so much you should have bought a dj bike in the first place, and if your style is having your rear wheel hit your seat everytime you land hard or do a drop then fair enough to you
  • 1 0
i had a dj, a custom 24 ns sub, and iv only ever buzzed once :S so theres no problem :S
  • 2 1
the fact that you have already 'buzzed' even though its just once, its enough times to make it a problem. If i had a rear mech that hit my spokes when i went into first gear, i would only need to hear it once then i would sort it straight away because its a problem i have on my bike, the same goes here, if you want to be running a mechanically sound bike then problems need to be fixed as soon as they are recognised or it just gets worse. but this is a man made problem that cant be changed now. So like i said i think it looks very cool but it has lowered the price you can get for the frame dramatically and if its not then the person who buys it is just stupid. this was your experiment, if you sell this and the frame snaps when someone rides it then its on you. so dont sell it because inevitably there will be an accident and it will be your fault.
  • 2 1
 Shut up.
  • 1 0
The reign should be fine, that part doesn't add strength to the rest of the frame. The only thing I'd be concerned about is the tyre hitting the seat but then it may still miss depending on how the wheel moves as it goes through the travel.
  • 5 0
I still cant see you getting £700 for that!

Going over the spec.. at second hand prices.

Wheels: No more than £120
Forks: Old pikes, so no more than £180
Brake, cranks, seat & pedals, £100 at best

Frame: worthless. These frames in good condition are worth around £200-£250. A butchered one which is pointless for the following reasons..

- Unless you run the shock so hard that it doesn't function, the seat will hit the wheel at full compression.
- In that case, the seat needs to be kept higher up, the point of the brace before was to support the seat tube. Now it is no longer there it will be far weaker if it takes an impact.
- Apart from that, the frame is in pretty bad condition generally. Completely forgetting the bare, sanded down patch on the top tube. Maybe respray it?

Adding that up.. Your looking at £300 + the frame, as I said - even in good condition thats only worth around £250, so you would be looking at £550. The 2nd hand market is awful for sellers at the moment.

Things aren't worth more money because you like them, as your not the one buying it I'm afraid. Its like buying a house, if you tidy it up and paint it beige it sells 100x easier.
  • 1 0
In what way does it make the frame far weaker under an impact? It was there to brace a part that is no longer on the frame. The other thing is yes realistically you won't get 700 for this as most people looking for a reign want one that hasn't been modified. I wouldn't do this to a frame but it's done now. I'd say if he really wants to sell it he'll have to drop the price drastically which is an unfortunate truth.
  • 2 0
To stop the tire hitting the seat, you will have to wack the seat right up yes? That then creates a very big pivot on the seat tube/top tube joint. Which the original brace was there to support.
  • 1 0
In that case, just raise the seat so that it is out of the way of the tire at full compression.. sorted Smile
  • 1 0
or do what some bmxers do and zip tie the seat to the top tube
  • 1 1
the tire will still hit the seat.
  • 1 0
obviously you'd do it so the wheel missed it..... Anyway why are we wasting so much time on this franken bike.
  • 1 0
The point is, if you then raise the seat it creates a massive pivot on that small joint where it was designed to be braced.
  • 1 0
This pivot is only an issue if the rear wheel hits the seat, so if it is raised beyond the point of full compression, then there is no problem.
  • 1 0
then you might aswell of left the frame the way it was Facepalm thats what jezzah is saying
  • 1 0
But it looks better without the brace. Smile
  • 1 0
So a bare patch of sanded down metal on the top tube really looks neater?
  • 1 0
obviously not neater, hence the sticker covering it up.
  • 2 0
that is horrible, and the DIY frame job looks proper gippo...
  • 1 1
in my opion, yeah i should get some new parts but i think the frame looks better, and it rides sweet so i dont give a f*ck Smile
  • 1 0
you are sat nearly on the rear wheel. i have one like this but hardtail with the triagle seat tube thingy, and wow if you cut that im sure it would be fuuucked.
  • 1 1
itdeffo aint f*cked...... has a good few years of riding left Wink
  • 1 0
I know that you said no swaps but I'll give you my iPhone 4 it White pretty much brand new
  • 1 0
if it was a 4s i would say yes but sorry pal
  • 1 0
i've sent you a message palSmile
  • 1 0
Would be nicer if the parts were the same colour
  • 1 0
i totaly agree Smile it was gonna be my project but i need monney for my 125 Smile i was gonna get the frame sprayed black and have a few of the parts green Smile
  • 1 0
doesnt the back wheel hit the seat ?
  • 1 0
iv buzzed it once from doing a 8tf drop landing slightly rear heavy Smile but iv pumped the psi up loads so its allot more like a hard tail Smile
  • 1 0
 ace thanks mate
  • 1 0
 would you sell frame only??
  • 1 0
nope sorry mate, i dont wanna be left with a shed full of parts :/
