Since doing some damage to my knee and sternum in July. (You likely have seen the crash on Fail of the month, not my proudest moment!) I've been slowly recovering back to my former self.
Part of this recovery has included a lot of time on the end of a shovel or digging tool of some sort, and a new love for peddling my bike uphill rather than just hucking off things. This love for pedaling has been spurred along by a fresh new Spitfire and a fresh trail in Queenstown.
The Trail is called the Salmon Run. Scoped by a few keen local builders and taken on board as an official QMTBC trail. In conjunction with the Queenstown Mountain Bike Club volunteers and Extra Mile Trail Building, a master piece has been built over a 9 month period through the cold winter nights. Finishing at the Salmon saloon with a beer or two and warm 'fush and chups'.
I unfortunately hurt myself during the build, so was absent for a large part of its creation. But, as soon as I was able, I got myself back up there to join this eager crew. There is definitely a sense of accomplishment being part of a project like this and seeing it to completion. I take my hat off to the other builders who's baby this was. Good job. Sick trail. A fun up trail and flowy, techy downhill in the beach forest is what Queenstown was missing.
It was heaps of fun to go play on this trail with Scott Robb (Parallax Media) and Quentin Kenning (Qfoto.NZ) behind the lens capturing the goodness.
It's been a sad time for New Zealand and the entire MTB community worldwide with the sudden loss of our good mate Kelly McGarry. What we have learnt from the big guy is to live our lives to the fullest. Make the most of every opportunity. Make time for everyone around you, be it family, friends or a grom at the trails.
This one's for you Kelly. You were on your way to film this trail. I really wish you had, and we were now sitting having a beer watching your footage together. You helped dig on this trail and loved riding it. Every lap down here will be for you. Miss you Mcgaz. Ride in Peace.
