Value Field Test: Haro Saguaro - The Pink Anvil
@hardtailpunter: cheap parts... the industry standard for cheapo 29 wheelsets is like 2.2-2.3kg (thanks 30-35mm tough rims), plus 1.1kg tires and a big arse cassette of at least 600grs, 180mm rotors at almost 200gr each, 600grs dropper and 2.2kg or so of fork. I haven't even listed the frame and that's already more than 8kg. Add cheap durable (cheap) frame - another 3.5-4.5kg and an assortment of cheap parts. Agreed with others that weight of bikes has gone wild. Wide rims and long geometries may have a part to play.

Praying for a bike that comes with half decent wheels even on mid-range bikes. Most come with boat anchors for wheels unless you're above the 5K bracket (I'm looking at you Rocky Mountain)

Welcome to the 2023 Value Bike Field Test
@Mtn-Goat-13: I've got a Instinct Alloy 30... nice bike but heavy AF at 35.8lbs for a Large totally stock. OK, take half a pound off if you remove the tubes and put sealant in the tyres

Opinion: Why You Shouldn't Care What the Pros Ride
Great article but "But mountain biking isn't like Formula 1: there are so many variables that can change from one run to the next that it's very hard to determine if one setup is "faster" than another." is incorrect as F1 changes from lap to lap and the set up for one driver is not the same for the guy on the other side of the garage driving the same car. Sorry, but while MTB being a mechanically based sport is quite complex, it's not anywhere close to the level of complexity of F1. Maybe as hyperbole the comparison works but not in reality. Not even close.

Rotor Confirms Full Details of 1x13 Drivetrain
@kleinblake: Too short a space to move a chain over several cogs. I seem to recall the Honda was 7sp initially and then upgraded to 9sp or something like that. Problem with gearboxes is that you have to either standarize (lol, that has worked so well in the bike industry) the mounting points/configuration or change frame and gearbox every time you change either unless you keep with the same manufacturer/model.
