PRESS RELEASE: Outride & Slug Bicycles

Outride and Slug Bicycles are joining forces to host the 2021 Solstice Ride from June 18 - June 21, 2021. The goal is to raise $100,000 for organizations diversifying youth cycling throughout the United States.

The Solstice Ride started in 2020 as a response to the ongoing discussion about racial injustice, raising over $15,000 for Blackstone Bicycle Works. Building on this momentum, Slug Bicycles and Outride are partnering with Quality Bicycle Products, Easton Cycling, SRAM, Teravail, and Whisky Parts Co. The 2021 Solstice Ride aspires to activate the cycling community to build a more equitable and inclusive culture.

The 2021 Solstice Ride is supporting grassroots organizations committed to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the cycling industry in five regions across the country including the Bay Area, Chicago, the Four Corners, Minneapolis, and New York City. This year’s grantees include: SiiHasin (Arizona & Navajo Nation), Silver Stallion Bicycle and Coffee (New Mexico & Navajo Nation), Cycles of Change (Oakland, California), Marin County Bicycle Coalition / Cory's Ride (Marin County, California), I Challenge Myself (New York, New York), Blackstone Bicycle Works (Chicago, Illinois), and Free Bikes For Kids (Minneapolis, Minnesota).

“We want to empower organizations already doing the work to diversify cycling in their communities,” said Outride Executive Director Skye DeLano. “We’re excited that Slug and other bike industry partners are working with us to make that happen.”

Outride and Slug are calling on cycling communities across the country to participate by joining or organizing a local Solstice Ride, raising awareness about the ride, and contributing $1 per mile ridden to the Outride Solstice Ride Fund. All donations will be matched $1:1 by the Outride Fund. Since 2019, the Outride Fund has granted over $500,000 to 76 community-based organizations advancing diversity in youth cycling across 30 states.

Silver Stallion is doing awesome stuff on the Navajo and Hopi reservations to get kids on bikes and repair bikes across a vast area without a single bike shop. Check out their social media pages send them some bucks if you can.

I love this!! I feel like something that would help more diversity get into the sport would be bike manufacturers making more affordable bikes. Even with the cost of R&D, bikes these days are way overpriced.

Why? Why on earth should something as inconsequential and unimportant as the color of a human have ANY bearing on what a person or company invests in. Simply, that is racist - period. No way around the fact that this program is inherently racist. Disgusting and pathetic. While the supposed premise is a socio-economic ploy of virtue signaling, this is about nothing more than color (and in the end, the even more disgusting than CRT and the indoctrination of our youth).

@JustAnotherRiderHere: You're shouting to nobody, in an empty room. Guessing you're white, right? Your homework is to read "Caste" and "Water Dancer" and write us all a book report.

@jmd07aa: So, you agree that racism is a good thing...sure, sure, carry on. The thinking of your brethren is akin to that of one Adolf Hitler...seriously, in lockstep. That is shameful. I am so happy that where I ride, race simply never, not ever becomes an issue. We have more important things to do...like ride bikes.

@JustAnotherRiderHere: ...but you do find time to go on a white tantrum on internet sites

@codypup: Um, who said anything about a specific race? You assume because someone does NOT use race as an identifier to place people into segments of society that I would then be, by default, caucasian? Seems to me we know who is small-minded, short-sighted, and yes - racist. You.
