And they are clumsy! They're slow to accelerate, the cornering is awkward and they generally make the bike feel cumbersome due to the large wheelbase.Take it from me; About 12 months ago my bosses made us develop a 32" full-suspension XC prototype and until a few days ago we were constantly running tests. As for the results: Let's just say we're all glad that the UCI is going to ban 32"-wheels next year, because they make for severly un-fun bikes.

Spotted: 32" Thomus XC Bike Breaks Cover At Lenzerheide World Cup
@mikekazimer: Management at the bike company I work at is 99% sure that 32" wheels will be banned by the UCI prior to the start of the 2028 racing season. They are so sure in fact that they made us (- the engineering team) halt the development of the 32" prototype.

Canyon’s Lux Era Concept Explores 32" Wheels and Aerodynamics for Marathon XC

Pinkbike Poll: Would You Buy A 32" Wheel Bike?
After all the 32" prototype testing we've done at the bike company I work at, I can confidently say that I would not buy one. 32" wheels suck and I can not wait for this bs to be over.

32" Wheels Aren't Going to Save the Bike Industry
Trust me, Mike, we know. That's why at the brand I'm currently working with, the product management and engineering team after much deliberation and even more testing has decided that we'll stick with 29" for our main wheelsize. That doesn't mean we won't make a 32" model, but anticipating that 32" will very likely remain a very small niche, our flagship models will keep rolling on 29" wheels.

@Sephyx: That's not the case at the brand I'm working for. We do 100% of the engineering work inhouse. But I do understand that others outsource a lot of their engineering work.

Starling Announces First Production 32/29 Mullet - The Big Bird
@waltworks: In a real-world adjacent XCO mountain bike setting, 32" wheels aren't really any faster than 29" wheels. Our tests indicate an advantage of less than 0.5%, basically within the margin of error. The advantage in roll-over efficiency a 32" tire has over a 29" tire is basically cancelled by the increase in hysteresis and friction.
(Source: I'm a mechanical engineer working for a bike company, one of the bikes I designed won an Elite XCO world cup in 2025 and currently I'm running a testing program on 32" wheels)

Industry Insiders: Are 32" Wheel Bikes Going To Take Off?
I'm an engineer, working for a bike company. At my company, after a lot of testing, the engineering- and product management team are all convinced 32" wheels will definitley not become mainstream. I won't explain our reasoning in detail, but basically, at the end of the day, 32" wheels don't add anything of value for the average rider. They aren't faster than 29" wheels outside of the margin of measurement error and they certainly are less fun.
