Tech Tuesday: Why Are Spoke Nipples Brass?
Given it's an article dedicated to the rationale for using a particular material, the information provided with regard to said material, is disappointingly sloppy and vague.

Vittoria Release New Downcountry Tire - The Syerra
The Mavic Quest Pro XL was a brilliant tyre, front and rear. I'm on my last pair unfortunately, and can't find anything to match it yet. Vittoria stuff seems to be the closest so far though, so I would give these a try.

Bike Check: The BREWser, a 184mm Travel, Crazy-Slack Experimental Gearbox Bike
@prosauce: It's two bolts to split the seat stay. Fair point about the wheel removal, but you need to faff with the belt tensioner at some point I imagine, hopefully enough belt length to get on/off the rear cog.

Brilliant fabrication and build... Do you need to dismantle the swingarm though, if you want to take the rear wheel off (i.e. take the belt off)?

Field Test: 10 Trail and Enduro Bikes Hucked To Flat at 1,000 FPS
I was intrigued by this in previous slow motion tests. I think though it is probably more to do with the rider being active in the bike + rider suspension system. There is an automatic bend of the knee when you land, but by the time you react to the ground contact, the suspension is halfway through its travel - the reduced load when you eventually bend means that momentarily the compression slows or stops, until the riders weight "catches up" when they have used all their bodies natural suspension. Then you see full compression of the fork and shock as full rider weight is applied to the bike. You can see it in the forks too, but it correlates with when the bars are weighted obviously. I doubt anyone could be aware they were unweighting the bike during compression though, and you would never notice without the high frame rate. I suspect that if you could somehow repeat the test with a rigid dead weight, the compression wouldn't be stepped.

Ask Pinkbike: Tire Sealant, Trunnion Shocks, Spoke Lengths, Fork Steerers & Insect Repellent
Honestly, I think Avon Skin So Soft is a pretty poor insect repellent, particularly for midges. I don't know why it always gets touted as some sort of semi-secret "hack" in the UK. It only seems to provide protection by virtue of the fact that the little buggers slide and/or drown in it, on your skin (for the spray on stuff anyway). I appear to be a fairly tasty specimen for them, but I find Smidge works well (saltidiin / icaridan). As others have said, I've melted plastics with DEET, so not that keen to use it unless I'm stuck.

Video: Specialized Epic vs. Viathon M1 - XC Hardtail Cage Match
Good information on the frame design. On your third point, I'd be interested if this is a common issue on DUB cranks, which I have also experienced - see forum posts below: https://m.pinkbike.com/forum/listcomments/?threadid=209146&pagenum=3 Doesn't excuse the builder for other fasteners right enough...
