The California Enduro Series struck it rich in Gold Country with the addition of the brand new Mammoth Bar Enduro which kicked off the series’ 2017 season. Produced by The Hub and Total Body Fitness, the sold-out May 6 event delivered a wealth of prime riding and camaraderie in the Auburn hills.

420 riders took on a 16-mile course featuring 3,100 feet of climbing and four timed stages on trails that varied from loose and flowy to exposed and rocky to lung-burning pedally at Auburn State Recreation Area (ASRA). Fortune smiled on the Mammoth Bar Enduro when Mother Nature provided excellent weather for the event. Warm temps and full sun increased the sweat factor for Friday practice, but race day dawned to cooler temps and plenty of cloud cover – perfect for racing.

Early season fitness was a must for this event, as riders faced punchy climbs that gave everyone’s lungs and legs a good beating. Ace handling skills were in order, as well, with the final two stages offering up technical challenges that demanded riders to be focused and nimble. After giving the course all they had, racers converged at the Mammoth Bar OHV park to enjoy complimentary BBQ, pasta, and libations while waiting for results and podium. Million dollar smiles witnessed throughout the venue testify to an all-around stellar day racing bikes with friends. And isn’t that what enduro is all about?

Amy Morrison (Marin) looking calm as she powers through the pedally sections of the course. She would take first place on her home trails, winning by thirty-nine seconds. Being on home turf didn’t make the race any easier for the avid racer, though. Morrison explains, “Everyone expects you to win, which makes it more stressful. And it was a pedally course, which I worried my off-season training wasn’t strong enough for, but it worked okay for me. It was a fun day and I did come out with the win so that was exciting!”

Others, not so much. Huge shout out to Tecnu for helping us guard against the not-so-friendly plant variety.

Essence Barton brought her A game, right out of the gate. Here she passes a fellow pro rider on the first stage of the day. Barton would go on to take third place.

The Marin team had a strong showing with Evan Geankoplis, shown here, taking third place in pro men. Three other Marin team riders – Amy Morrison, Cory Sullivan, and Janea Perry – would step up to the podium at the end of the day.

Erik Saunders (Full Factory Saunders Racing) rocking his fresh new Fly Racing kit while enjoying post-race BBQ and pasta. Saunders, one of CES’ four co-founders, reflected on the series’ fifth year anniversary: “I’m just realizing that this is year five … it doesn’t seem like it at all. The series is growing so quickly and we are adding so much to our production capabilities that it feels like a brand new endeavour every year. Each year builds on the last so we haven’t had a moment to coast. I’m excited for all the ideas not yet implemented, and am looking forward to the next five years!”

Are you race ready? Here, Trail Works’ Brian Astell shows some line options for one of the course’s many water crossings. A new addition to the series, the Trail Works pre-ride will be available to participants before every race. Astell recalls, “I had an awesome time leading the pre-race guided ride at the Mammoth Bar Enduro. We sessioned difficult sections on the course which helped riders take on sections they normally would have walked. My main objective this year is to help as many people as possible with their riding. Whether training, nutrition info, or riding technique, that’s what I’m here for.” For more information, email brian@ridetrailworks.com]brian@ridetrailworks.com.

Finally I get the recognition I deserve... As a drunk heckler. I really should have stopped by that tecnu station, I got hit hard. Currently on day three of prednisone for the massive amount of poison sumac I got. Totally worth it, cant wait to heckle at the Reno and Northstar races.

No Reno race this year. There is an epic in Carson city though.

Sorry for photo bombing your heckle pic..... Ruined it for you
  • 2 0
@StevenNadaskai: Just saying, you could have thrown a fat roost for more photo steeze.

Anyway, if either of the brothers from TrailPeak are reading this, you still owe me a beer. Or... you have to shotgun a beer with me, whatever.

Featured 3100 ft of climbing? I thought enduro featured the down?

what goes up must come down.....

that's a mild day of riding in auburn, you gotta pay to play there.

Transfers are no joke - I prefer Enduros at ski resorts. For amateurs. Old ones. Also - great job by Dillon Santos - str8 outta Salinas Califas.

At least 1,000k was paved road ascent and descent.

@sassylassie: For real. Auburn is my standard stomping grounds, and I feel like its made me pretty tough lol
  • 2 0
The timed race stages featured the down, but you have to put in pedal work in between. I was gassed by the time I hit the transfer between 3 & 4. Shit was a pedalfest on the transfers.

I have a ton of photos of the riders - over 240 in this album. It has been shared so much hard to keep track of it all. If you rode look at the link below. Also if the riders want FREE hi-res version I have that and more. Most photos I took a burst of 5-10. Just had room to post the best. Thank you for the support of my local publication. Auburn Magazine and Placer County Magazine stop by our page on Facebook Auburn Magazine California.

Thank you, Jeremy

Hey thanks again for coming out Jeremy. I was the one hanging out for awhile with you under the drop at Stage 2 while I waited for my start.
  • 1 0
I was fortunate enough to ride some of the trails that were supposed to be apart of the race. Stonewall was the shit! It was a pedally course for sure but still a fun day on the bike.
  • 2 0
We need photos of the bikes.
  • 1 0
stage 3 was for the real racers... slamming into turns and hucking off rocks at 190bpm under full power... 100% in pain....
  • 1 1
This is not even close to Enduro racing, looks XCish. Racers/ Riders complaining about climbing....maybe should ride more and less IPA!
  • 1 0
Lots of strange clothing going on there...
  • 1 1
Nice podium steeze! No empty handed supermans present.
  • 5 6
This race was ass at least 400 of that was in the timed section.
  • 1 0
 huh?
  • 6 1
There wasn't anywhere close to 400 feet of climbing in the timed sections. The only people I heard complaining were people lacking in fitness.
  • 2 1
 @Banshee916: I was certainly lacking some fitness....2 & 3 were tough.
  • 2 1
 @Banshee916: ENDRUO NOT XC
  • 2 0
@flagstaff: yep! 2 and 3 was where i suffered the most and lost time...but I knew that was going to happen once they changed up the course...but again, all good and racing on home trails was a blast!
  • 5 0
The course was forced to change due to the state changing it two weeks before the race. It was alot better before hand. If you wanna blame somebody blame the state of California not total body fitness or the hub or CES.
  • 2 0
@flagstaff: yea it definitely hurt, I didn't give myself enough recovery time between 1 and 4. Sounded like everyone had bronchitis at the end of the day from pushing so hard.
  • 3 0
@fmogan77: There was plenty of down, and some climbs, EWS races have climbs in stages too. Definitely not a XC race, but good fitness did help, but doesn't it in any race?
  • 2 1
@Banshee916: maybe all-in there was 400' for all 4 stages. But that's ok. You wait and see what the ews is going to do this year and next... By next year the complainers will quit and go back to strava racing... There will be climbing and flat in the stages. They are getting more difficult in every way. Steeper, gnarlier, faster, rockier, longer, more pedaly-er, more climby-er... While Mammoth Bar lacked the mega-gnar, it delivered on the pedaling and the in-stage climbing... Riders should get used to it in enduro from here on out.. if they aspire to top level racing they will need to get longer travel forks, road bikes, and power meters, and strength coaches, and fitness coaches. #endurofuture it's real racing now with a different kind of athlete from dh, or xc...
  • 1 0
@eriksaun: I agree with you completely, the more gnar out there is actually in mammoth bar which we couldn't race on. Just wait till next year, hopefully it feature all Auburn has to offer. I ride the area 3 to 4 days a week and I love it.
