For the same reason I prefer a manual transmission in a car, I like mechanical shifting on a bike. I am not racing, I don’t care if it is faster or more efficient, I enjoy the satisfaction of doing it myself and a well time shift that I did myself.

Some of us are old enough to remember that people only wore denim for bike riding because there really weren't other choices outside of lycra. Denim is horrible for riding in, cotton absorbs moisture and the rubbing will chafe the crap out of you after a while.
Now get off my lawn so I can go back to yelling at clouds.
