Addendum. Although it’s not quite true as some riders still use rear brakes for manuals, Chase Hawk being the one that comes to mind. Oh well, at least it’s less messy than the cross-sport definitions for switch/oppo/fakie!

A manual by definition is pure balance, i.e. no braking or accelerating allowed, compared to wheelies which use both. Otherwise it would be a nose wheelie, stoppie, or endo.
