How To Get a Banger Shot with JB Liautard - Video
@jucrowe: Hey buddy, I'm with you. I'm not saying that part of the art isn't in post. I am saying that getting everything technically right in camera is imperative to creating great work. Slight correction on your technical note. You don't get extra stops in post unless you are creating an HDR file with multiple images. All the information, including DR, is there at the moment of capture. That amount of DR is determined by the sensor. From there, inf you're shooting a JPG or TIFF, the camera processes the information based on the picture profile setting and spits out a file, tossing out certain amounts of information as blacks get crushed or whites blown out, loss of color info if saving as as sRGB, etc. Which, to your point, is why people shoot raw, so they have the higher bit depth and as much info as that sensor can gather, so they have flexibility in post.

How To Get a Banger Shot with JB Liautard - Video
@mitchgulliver: Man, seems like I hit a nerve here. My original post about neg propping was in regards to this mentality that many people have that post-production is what makes a photo great, or can save a mediocre photo. You are absolutely correct when you say the digital camera has sat, sharpening, contrast built into a given picture profile. And you can customize those profiles. Similarly, in the film days people chose provia sometimes and kodachrome others because they wanted a certain amount of contrast, or wanted their colors rendered a certain way. That's not new here because of digital. I'm not going to belabor this conversation. Visual storytelling is my profession and I chose to get it right in camera for my clients.

@ninjatarian: you sir, are correct. It is minor and easy work. You said "all of the post-processing" which makes it sound like a lot to make it the great photograph it is.

@vinay: Maybe, as long as you can sync it with your radio triggers, sure. Just goes to show it's about the photographer, not the tools.

Gonna neg prop you on that one. Good photographers get it right in camera and that's what this guy did. With a shot like that with almost no ambient light to speak of and the use of strobes, what you see is mostly what you get. Light Room/Photoshop might be used for some dodging and burning and some color adjustments.
