Episode 7 starts back at the Athertons' home in Wales. Dan and Gee hit the jumps on the trails behind the house. Testing out a new line, suddenly, Dan crashes. It's a neck injury, and it doesn't look good. In fact, it turns out Dan's lucky to be alive. This episode is dedicated to the fallen riders who may not have been so lucky.
Wow! He is sooo lucky to be alive after breaking his C1. He has a great attitude and focus on what is important and a supportive family. I hope he recovers quickly to his former self and is able to use this as a positive experience.
damn! this video really makes me think about what may happen if it all goes wrong. ive had a few broken bones in my time, but seeing this is a whole lot worse because its life threatening. dan is lucky to have such supportive friends and family aswell, im sure he'll come back stronger than ever. good luck on your recovery dan mate! nice trails too btw.
dude i had a ig stack yesterday and ended up in hospital but nowhere near as bad as this, good luck to dan with the recovery you hardass. anyone wanna help organise a charity ride to raise money for the wingsforlife organisation that is looking after dan??
It scares me every time I see or hear about things like this. But this is part of our sport and passion i guess... Thank god for Dan tho. Hope he has a good recovery! ride safe guys!
And freaking Gee with his stupid glove! awesome lmao
Broke my back on May 29th, will be back on the dirt and downhilling next Friday (Aug 20th). This experience gave me a perspective on life that I never expected, being able to ride like we do and LIVE life with an edge. Dan, have the faith to lean on your support (Gee & Rach, Mom & Pop), listen to your Doc's guidance and find the desire within to achieve a better level of health than before the accident. We're behind you brother. Hope we see you out here in So. Cal. during the off-season while you're doing your rehab. Don't give up, don't ever give up!!!
Was speaking to dan in manchester airport he not looking so good with his helmet n neck brace on but he seems to be able to ask his mum for some change to get something from the shop get well soon dan (Y)
How long will it be before Nurse Gee is wipin his bottom. With support like that his recovery will take no time flat. Good luck Dan, our prayers are with ya.
Massive get well to Dan.
Great to see how close the family is, the support from Gee and Rach will be priceless.
Dan, lying on the ground, holding his head still could have saved his own life.
One massive crash after another to the tune of "extreme, sick, nice, dude!" Pro man-child meets inevitable halo date. We see children like this in the ER from time to time with their "cool" going on as they gloss over their own fragility in the face of a poorly understood close call.
Depictions like "Atherton Project" (along with legal stimulants, video cameras, and peer courage) help fuel decisions/practices that will contribute to a lifetime of pain, handicap, or worse. Perhaps this video might introduce a bit of perspective to the teens and tweens who follow blindly toward the "totally sick extreme" that is paraded by today's version of yesterday's cool. Just wait 'til tomorrow...
Schuttg is right, its always possible to take a fall. I agree everyone should watch this, its the real deal. If you are not willing to think that then you are not willing to face the true. I believe Dan is as calm as he is because he knows he needs to grow from this and learn. Get back soon Dan.
schuttg is not right, he says that basicly every mountian bikier is going fall and have a stupidly bad crash like dan, yes people fall off but only a small few are like this, hes basicly saying to riders dont ride cause your going to fall off and fuck yourself up.
Thanks airtym. I was beginning to think I commented on the wrong video. I got anything but a 'buzz' when I watched it. I rode yesterday and hit some jumps. And I might have even smiled a bit.
Danny-oli, we are going to disagree on this. I can honestly say I live to ride, and on a few occasions found myself in a hospital because of it. It would be a poor choice to ignore this is possible. Unless you plan on staying inside and not doing anything riding of this nature is something you/we all need to respect. Have fun, go riding with you friends and family. But as soon as you forget to respect it you COULD get you very hurt. Dan even states this in the video. He says, "I rode and worked out and rode again and dug and rode.....", "I should have rested....". He forgot for a moment, thats all it takes. We aren't talking about a nice easy XC ride, he's gapping huge dirt jumps. There are things you need to keep in mind. 98% of the time we are all out just having a blast, it only takes a moment or less to get F'd. Ride smart, safe and not tired or worse(drunk, high...) Schuttg, I believe is stating the obvious; ride, have fun and been as safe as possible.
No I see where your coming from, I've been in hospital from riding aswell but you just get back on when you can, its just his attitude to the sport and the way he said it, he's basicly telling everybiker that you WILL crash and burn, just puts a whole downer on the sport with a negitive attitude, yes you can get hurt put dont forget that its all about the fun.
I tried googling all of the lyrics in that short bit of audio but didn't find anything. Sorry. And the band is not listed in the credits in case anyone wants to spout that out.
get well soon!!
Good luck Dan and fast recovery!
I love Atherton family!
