Old School Throwback: 90s MTB Masters

Apr 27, 2013 at 22:50
by Matt Wragg
This week for our Old School Throwback, we go right the way to Spain in 1992, for what is both one of the oldest, and weirdest MTB films we have ever seen. We admit it, we're suckers for a bit of Bonnie Tyler, speed-wheelying through traffic and bull bars. This definitely has one of the best soundtracks we've heard in a while - the world would be a better place if more mountain bike films were soundtracked to 80s hair metal rather than dubstep. There is even some early slow-mo action in here, although 240fps was still a few years away when this was shot...

gad dam it. Even in the 90s there were mountain bikers a 150 times more skilled than I'll ever be.

Those looks on people`s faces tell a story.
No suspension, skills only.
Was there a slo-mo?

That was hands down one of the coolest mountainbike films iv seen in ages. Pure skill there.

look a those hairs in the 90s

Are you sure that was the 90s. I still see riders looking and riding like that.

Fully rigid is the way to go! I still ride my rigid xc bike a lot. Makes riding the DH machine so much more comfortable Razz

..Going to get my TREK 820 SINGLETRACK out and go for a spin.

these two dudes need to get a room already...

first its borderline urban dh... then crazy trailriding and trials... and then you notice how they're practically riding heavy road bikes...

What comes around goes around. We'll all be riding with fanny packs in a couple of years

 @ 4:05

I had no idea someone could get so damn steezy in a flat straight line.

I love how the vid was 80% climbing and 20% descending. So few mainstream vids give climbing the respect it deserves. Massive respect for the skill it takes to ride like that.

You know your good when you can make Lycra and a tucked in shirt look classy.

Think they still ride? Pinkbike hunt them down!

Filmed in Madrid. This film took me to mountainbiking at the age of 12-13...And it took me to the use of helmet on bikes...I actually managed to get a Bell Image like that one Wink Have a look to the rest of the film in the long version.

Ahaha the scenes where he's trying to weird-pedal his nuts back out of his shorts-leg! That was an essential skill back in the day. Also, please someone with a time machine go back and get me fifty pairs of XT thumbies. Now I'm going to tuck my t-shirt into my bum-bag and go ride.

oh ya! white Bell helmets and fanny packs!

Think they are riding some or those 26er wheels that where common back in the day....
  • 8 2
Toe clips (probably the most dangerous thing to put on a bike!) and brake boosters, now that brings back memories
  • 8 0
I don't know... I think razor blades on the wheels might be a tad more risky...

Soundtrack is not original... most of it is from the 2000s
  • 6 0
You're right. This is the original vid: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHiLKgD6IoY

The music one is better for non spanish speaking people though

This version is longer. At about 20 minutes they ride all the way back down.

Several of those tracks are from one of the NWD films.

Anyone who listens to RA can redo the soundtrack for every film as far as I'm concerned. Never thought I'd hear anything from him in an MTB film.

I have one of those bikes in the video that I still ride today, and pick it to ride over my new fancy Carve Pro. The Carve Pro is faster, but the old school'er is more fun. I'm just afraid I'll break it being that it's18 years old. My next build is going to be a fully rigid titanium with 650b wheels.

Me too, but hitting roots at anything other than absolutely 100% perpendicularly will throw you off, and those narrow handlebars make jumping a little sketchy.

Nothing else rips up fire roads quite like it, though.

around that 7:50 mark - anyone else expecting to see "bio-pace" chainrings? haha, the ideas we had once upon a time......
  • 1 0
phew. I'm not the only one who thought that

 so much awesome!!!!!!
im very impressed. if you've ever ridden with that long of a stem, narrow bars, full rigid, clipped in, and with geometry like that you know how hard what they are doing actually is. god I'm old!

keep the throwbacks coming its so good.

i have "shift" digitized if ever you need it

That Golf GTI at 1:01! Still have my old vintage Reynolds 531 Eagle K2 from 91/92 and it still runs like new, I used to destroy a wheel a week on it.

The fact that those bikes held up to that 90's punishment...

mind = blown
  • 2 0
Add to that the fact that these guys themselves held up to that abuse! All of my joints would be screaming loud and clear.

Had a Diamond Back just like them. Very skilful riders. Watching it made me want to go out riding. Cool vid.

I had a Cannondale SM600 at that time - brutally stiff down hill. This reminds me of what riding was about back then. Still cant believe we used to tuck out t-shirts into cycling shorts.....
