Reduce Arm Pump with the Muc-Off Athlete Protection range

Muc-Off are excited to launch a specific athlete protection range formulated to give athletes everything they need to improve and boost performance from start to finish, including preparation and recovery. The range includes a Luxury Warm Up Cream formulated to allow your legs to work at an optimum level of effectiveness with an intelligent heating system, which can control the temperature it provides to you. This is great to help you mentally kick-start your race or training days!

The range also includes Explosive Power and Ultra Endurance Cream, which are formulated with vital Arginine and Taurine Amino Acids respectively. Our highly innovative Amino Patch Technology has been tested thoroughly by the University of Cologne, and can be felt working instantly as they are absorbed directly into the skin, through the muscles and into the blood stream. Explosive Power Cream uses Arginine Amino acids to help dilate blood vessels and increase blood supply to the muscles. It delivers an extra boost of power when you need it most, increasing gains of strength and energy!

The Ultra Endurance Cream used Taurine Amino acids and gets to work straight away, converting Glycogen into Glucose to fuel your muscles, increasing protein synthesis. This dramatically reduces arm pump so you can focus on nailing your next run! A successful recovery will make all the difference to your next race. The Amino Glutamine in the Muscle Recovery Balm increases glycogen storage and hydrates muscle cells so you can fully maximise your training! The whole range has been formulated with unique scientific research, its non-toxic, and skin friendly with plant and mineral derived formulas.

Rubbing amino acids on your skin? Complete snake oil. The pseudo-scientific way in which this was written has given me a new (more negative) view on MucOff as a company.

Stick to cleaning bikes please, leave out the unfounded claims and pseudoscientific BS, or support them with data from a properly conducted scientific trial using these products (link please).

Oh my, I was in a grumpy mood when I wrote this this morning!

However I have done some digging based on the citation of a scientific study on the MucOff website (muc-off.com/fitness/278-recovery-balm.html?ref_cat=30) and found a PDF of the very small research study that the claims are based on (www.lipodrift.com/PDF/Final_Report_BES-T-2012.pdf).

"The first study with a single treatment of BES-T AMINO POWER demonstrated that maximum force was not affected. In a test on repetition maximum at sub maximal force (80%, resistance against exhaustion), analyzing of the raw data as well adjusted raw data also demonstrated no statistical significant differences on this parameter.
However and for us unexpected using simulation models according to Mayhew and Wathan they resulted a strong, nearly significant tendency, that the resistance against exhaustion is increased after BES-T treatments. This result is unexpected."

These simulation models, that produced only a NEAR significant result, are cautioned in the scientists' report:
"Because it is just the usage of mathematic models the results of these simulations can only be taken to provide hinds for potential effects but are not real data."
"However these results should not be over interpreted. To get clear data additional experiment with a modified experimental setup are necessary."

If there were a real effect, you'd expect to see it with the more standard statistical analysis, hence these claims are unfounded.

Oh, the power of online media! Press releases/adverts need to stand up to more scrutiny than they would in the print media!

"The range includes a Luxury Warm Up Cream formulated to allow your legs to work at an optimum level of effectiveness with an intelligent heating system, which can control the temperature it provides to you"

Embrocriation creams (i.e. deep heat and similar "sports warm up") have recently been found to be complete B.S. in terms of having any effect on athletic performance. See the recent programme by BBC "The Truth About..your medicine cabinet" hosted by Dr Chris Van Tulleken.

They work by irritating the surface of the skin, causing a feeling of warmth, but do not penetrate the skin to any depth that causes any effect on the muscles.

Snake oil...

yeah @hampsteadbandit I saw that program too and that's the 1st thing I thought of

Nothing that you apply topically gets past the outermost layer of your epidermis. To put that in perspective, the skin on most of your body has four layers of epidermis before reaching: the dermis (much thicker than all four layers of epidermis combined), Subcutaneous fat (thicker than all that I've mentioned already combined if you have a %body fat that allows you to function) Muscle Fascia (which is so impenetrable that it allows compartment syndrome to occur).

So in a nutshell. Bollocks. Massage your legs with anything that stops your hands sticking to your skin to stimulate blood flow, stretch appropriately and there is your perfect warm up.

 www.lipodrift.com/PDF/Final_Report_BES-T-2012.pdf

This is the science behind it. Differences not significant, even with some mathematical modelling (but then 'near significant').

I think your olfactory receptors are functioning well.

 MUTZIG FACTOR TEN!

This is cool, but seriously, what is the difference between this and illegal performance enhancing drugs? I'm not pro-drugs at all, but why is this substance legal and others aren't? Or am I missing something?
  • 6 1
I THINK it's because it's not made from banned substances, think energy gels / drinks etc but better. Not steroids (I THINK)
  • 13 0
I think it's because drugs work (despite what Richard Ashcroft claims).

Still, if your mate beats you to the top of the hill, you could always blame his shower gel or whatever!

Don't know whether to use the Explosive Power one for DH or the Ultra Endurance. When I'm pushing back up I wouldn't want to waste all that extra explosive power so figure the Endurance one will keep me going all day YAY!
