Katy Winton to Stand in as Fox at Red Bull Foxhunt

Red Bull Foxhunt, the world’s only all-female downhill MTB event, is back for 2017 and this year will be taking place from 7-8 October on a brand new course in Wales and with a new Fox, Katy Winton.

Katy Winton sits 4th but is very much still in contention for a podium position if she has a good day tomorrow.

A bad crash at the UCI MTB World Championships in Cairns, Australia earlier this month has forced an injured Rachel Atherton to pass on the baton to her Trek Factory Racing Enduro teammate Katy Winton. Rachel will still be attending this year’s event and will be on hand to give tips, advice and encouragement to the riders taking part.

Up and coming Scottish MTB rider Katy Winton has had a solid season, finishing all Enduro World Series races consistently within the top ten, including a season-best in Machico where she stormed to a 2nd place finish.

Rachel Atherton said about the event, “I crashed at the World Champs and broke my collarbone so I had to have an operation, which means I can’t take part in this year’s Red Bull Foxhunt. When I crashed I was completely devastated, the only thing I cared about is that I couldn’t do Foxhunt with all you awesome shredders.”

Rachel Atherton looked up to speed in a hurry and won t be giving up those rainbow stripes without a fight.

She went on to add, “The good news is my Trek Factory Racing Enduro teammate Katy Winton is going to take my place and be the fox at this year’s event. She’s had a cracking season and is a future champion for sure so I know it's going to be a great event. I’m still going to be there, I will be on track, giving you tips and hanging out with you in the event village after. I’m really gutted I can’t be riding with you, but I will definitely be there.”

Well done Katy, big shoes to fill, you may need to get a bit pushy with riders holding you up #takenoshit

Trek - get your factory female riders together for an edit - they all rip and it would be awesome! Brown, Winton, Atherton and Batty ... diff styles, but they all rip in various disciplines.

Is there a rule if Katy catches up the riders in front immediately forfeit and pullover? What's stopping the participants from teaming up to purposely slow her down?

 Uhh, sportsmanship?

And I think it's a normal mass-start race, aside from getting chased by a pro.

In the men's foxhunt, there are no rules!

Unfortunately I've never heard of her as I don't pay close attention to 'duro, but I'm stoked she gets a chance to have some big exposure!

She's also Scottish DH champ, if that is bona fide enough?

@lochussie: awesome! I'm not sure why I got down voted. I'm trying to say I'm stoked for someone less well known to get exposure, I thought it was a positive comment :/

@Joebohobo: I took it as positive. It is nice to hear about the lesser known athletes, male and female in mountain biking that are moving on up.
  • 23 2
@lifeofloon: Katy Winton is NOT a lesser know athlete, she's been bloody well killin' it for a couple years.
  • 12 2
@rideonjon: shes lesser known than rach
  • 14 1
@lifeofloon: she's one of the top female enduro racers... currently sitting 3rd in EWS overall and is on Trek Factory Racing. She rips.

The key point here: stop referring to someone as "lesser known" if you don't know them. That's an inadvertent insult.

T-Mo could have done it, as we all know she never really retired Smile

@gramboh: the sad point is enduro does not have the exposure that downhill or xc has at this point. I only race enduro on my regional circuit but with limited coverage of the EWS some of these athletes are lesser known. I can name more downhill and xc racers on the world cup circuit than EWS racers and it's because of the coverage. I'm sure there are a lot of other folks in the same boat as me. People can go ahead and jump down the throats of others that don't live and breath the little news and coverage that comes out about the EWS or they can except that it's a relatively new field and people are still learning about it and are excited to learn about those that are excelling in this great form of cycling.
