After a week of building in the desert it's time to ride. While Andreu Lacondeguy and Kyle Strait are pre-qualified, Tom's first goal is to simply qualify for finals – where each rider will receive two runs and one chance at Rampage gold. The entire season comes down to this, but who will stand on the podium at this year's Red Bull Rampage?
Enjoyed this year's Rampage a LOT. Andreu won, but Steenbergen almost stole the show with that massive front flip.. we owe him that much for an incredible attempt.
...Zink is in the hospital for days before his run last year and still competes. Shows how much of a beast that dude is. I really feel for Aggy, I think he could win this venue if he can make it to the bottom. Such a gnarly line he picked.
Tne Fest guys kind of make the event though. It would be much less interesting without aggy or Andreu not to mention all the other fest riders.
Plus the bond between fest riders is so sick!
Agree that rampage is better off with some of the fest guys in the event, but they get a little carried away, making sure everyone knows what they're about. Not really a need to be so aggressive about it, with the chants etc...
Prolly because FEST doesn't compete with Red Bull's events and well... you'd have to be a heartless monster to not like FEST. It was awesome seeing them do that haha. Idhbaker- who cares, they're promoting a sick event they created and at least they're not flashing sponsor logos like you see everywhere else.
The fest logo is very similar to a sponsor logo. They're actively trying to subvert the fmb by being aggressive at rampage. It's no secret - they actively hate on other competitions all the time. Like I said, I like what they're doing, and think they are all great riders, but they are also actively detracting from the competition, and causing a fractured scene, by their attitude at rampage. Why not let their competitions and riding speak for themselves, rather than shove it down viewers' and other riders' throats.
That'd be true except they don't hate the Rampage event... its huge and they get to build their own stuff. Its the most in-line to what they believe FEST series should be all about. The only fuss or "fractured" setting I'm seeing as a result are just people online. I think the fans are blowing it wayyyy out of proportion.
You're right, they don't hate rampage at all, but they certainly hate on the fmb, which rampage is a part of, and who play an active role in running it. They outwardly criticize the fmb all the time, and so help negatively affect the scene overall.
Well they're very well known as more freeriders than dirt jumpers so of course they're not going to like the smaller jumps on hardtails/slope bikes. That divide happens in every sport and again, the only negative impact I see are from fans. I have yet to hear officials or other riders saying they're affected by the personal tastes of a few riders that don't even participate in any other FMB stop... The only negativity resulting from them being open and honest is from the fans and their opinions have zero affect on the big picture. The riders don't have to pretend to be 100% supportive of everything and if anything, forcing the riders to lie or not share their honest thoughts is the direct result of an unhealthy/negative scene. But really though at the end of the day, who cares? Its just their opinion, not gospel truth.
I was glad to see he was able to walk away. I didn't see any reports this week on his condition. I really want to see him stick that front flip on the big gap.
Excellent video, Rampage was sooo Rad!!! Minus the silly commentator's. Andreu's run had so much style, difficulty and amplitude that their is no doubt that his run was the best!!! Zink still an Animal!!!!! an Aggy man, Aggy is just pure Radness!!!!
2014 Rampage, was better than 2013 in my eyes!!!! Well done everybody!!!!
Look at Andreus helmet cam footage. He basically just charged a straight line down the mountain. A massive, gnarly, near vertical, monster of a mountain. With a several gigantic cliff drops. Did it with whips and a corked backflip, all with perfect execution. Talk again about huge balls and skills?
Splitting hairs, hard to judge. They all had sick lines. Zink, Semanuk, Straight, and maybe even Rheeder's could have been better but they all had their upsides and downsides. I think that in the replay version, not live, Lacondeguy's massive hip jump whip was missing from the video? Until I remembered that part I questioned whether the judges called it right. It's true his line was balls out, fast and smooth.
The way I see it: everyone was pushing it to their own limit, some had luck, some didn't, but everyone is a winner this year. Personally I would prefer to see rampage run as a FEST format: give the guys their time to get the best out of them, they were pushing themselves a bit too much because time limits and I'm sure that if they were a bit more relaxed, ee would see that frontflip landed properly, Zink making his own line and even fairclough flipping his gap. So if you're looking for mayor audience keep this format and suffer this commentators or ask the riders how to run it and enjoy BEST FEST EVER!!!!
Sweet Video!! Nice to see the inside perspective. I was rushing more watching this than the actual stream. Probably helped the video quality was better in this. Thanks!
The judges scored aggy at 94 in qualies. Seeing that they had the same run it made sense for Andreu to be in the mid 90 range. Although he may have tricked less he flew down the course, had flow and still whipped everything for style which is what the judges are looking for.
Almost everybody else comes to a complete stop at some point during their line (such as Steenbergen's). Andreu's line choice allowed him to absolutely fly down that hill and he made a point to look comfortable on every feature he hit. Which is not a surprise since he has been riding his big bike like 24-7 all season after last year's event. He wasn't happy with the way he was scored and decided, rather than complain and not do anything about it, to make a commitment to something he cared about and then let his riding do the talking. He really did deserve the title more than any other competitor in the finals.
also, when quite a few riders would land large drops/jumps, they would head bobble. But for Andreu, on just about all the jumps and drops, if not all off them, he would land super smooth.
Yeah even that huge drop no head bobble like Aggy and landed right in the sweet spot. This look showed more of the nuances that I missed all caught up in the excitement on the day. This years Road to Rampage kind of makes up for the lack of a DVD from the last few.
@mattin, go back to your cave
