Bike Check: The Afterlife - A Homemade Carbon Bike With Machined Carbon Chainstays
@Superboost: yes I am an engineer in a business that designs, manufacturers (laying up, machining, assembling) tests and uses a lot of high performance structural carbon fibre composite components in very demanding environments where they are subjected to high loads and safety is critical. It is of no impact to me if my advise is not wanted, and to be honest I wouldn’t normally bother commenting, just looking out for the safety of a fellow MTBer.

Very cool to design and make this bike, looks cool and some nice engineering details. Please reconsider the machined carbon chainstays - there isn’t much detail given but machining large pockets out is scary when considering how the material is very directional in how it can carry stress without breaking.

Looks like they need to beef up the bearings and swinglink and pivots where they attach to the “downtube”. This looks like a fancy sticking plaster of limited benefit not a long term solution.

Bike Check: Joe Breeden's Intense M279 HP1 Prototype DH bike
@SleepingAwake: it dissipates energy but it’s not the same as viscous damping and is destructive for small bump sensitivity and suspension control - that’s why fork manufacturers put so much effort into trying to get rid of it

Tool's High-Pivot Prototype is Machined in Canada
Frame looks great. But Am I the only one who finds it crazy to go to so much trouble to make a frame out of aluminium and then put carbon rims on it? Frame is a way better component to make out of carbon than a rim.

Despite my comment about super flat rocker angle and friction I do actually quite like the look of it, raw aluminium reminds me of the Intense SOCOM I wanted back in 2008

It’ll work but I reckon the loads in the rocker pivots will be way bigger than with a more conventional rocker angle and generate a load more friction. Spend all that time on the axle path and then pile in friction with the geometry ‍♂️
