@AltaSki: As in the article , very odd combination of parts. The 26 inch wheels seem the oddest to me, along with the long cranks.
Travis was a proponent of larger wheels (maybe just after this race).
He was tall and altitude favors a slower cadence on the climbs, so the 180 mm cranks might have helped to save his lungs for a portion of it. No rock strikes likely on this course.
The mix and match of the components is a real throwback to the earlier days of racing.
