Well i think that MAC browser is using the parts far better than windows.
i´ve got an imac from 2007 with 2.4ghz intel core 2duo and 2gb ram and a radeon HD2600, and can work with out any problems on 1080p50 footage in final cut. i think thats impressive.
okay the rendering takes a long time...
but now is see avid in action, i start to like it

It's available on both platform, but expensive compared to FCP. This is just the color correction feature, this doesnt' even touch the ability of Avid with pro looking effects (not the flashy stuff) and they're all very flexible and you can add effects as if it were a seperate video track, free'ing you from being limited to dropping effects onto clps, and being able to just simply make changes on the fly, no need to re-animate anything.

Plus, Avid's style of trimming is extremely complicated, but sooo fast and painless too. Heavy keyboard based.

2,500$ for that program is realy expensive...
i think i´ll stick with FCP.
but you are right with that drag and drop problem. and that sending from FC to color or to motion is annoying.
but the product at the end is alright...
check this out videos.mtb-news.de/videos/view/6874/h (well i had no time to do a good color correction)

Couldn't find a video but I found the DL link on the side!

Oh yeah I wasn't joking when I said it was expensive. But it is radically different compared to FCE/FCP/Pr/Vegas. Where it truely shines is in the trimming style and high end file management in massive file-based projects that acumulate over time.

In the end it's what get's the job done right? I'm using it because (well it's because it was my first real NLE after Vegas 6) because it's what some/most high end editing houses use. I'm tryign to enter the industry in the pro level, the only way to stand out is to know Avid so Avid along with all the other programs is what I know.

It's a tough world out there, fortunatly for me I feel I'm a strong 'one-man-show' in terms of planning and production of videos end to end and understand what it takes (I don't do just bike videos...), the next step is to get in the door, which will also help because I'm starting an internship.

You doing it as a hobby?

at the moment it is just a kind of hobby. but i´m planing to become a director and film maker after my studies (engineering sience). so i use my hobby (mtb) so get to know more about technics, camera angels and other stuff.

Word. In that case I would'nt fret about software use what works, I'd work on on-set production knowledge, non-biking cinematography is vastly different. Nothing beats proper camerawork and understanding proper indoor lighting technique. Mainly when it comes to lighting, like understanding color temperatures, using hard or soft lights, and how they have an effect on the overall image. It's easeir to play around when making a film, it's when you do coperate video work that involves proper interviews that are tricky because you have to light the skin tones perfectly without having a wierd color cast.

well you are right. but i want is the knowledge of the use of the natural light. my film that i´m working on at the moment will have the style of an old james bond film, like making night shots at bursting sun shine (with lots of contrast). thats what i find aesthetic.
the problem is that these kind of film were made on film. to make such a production is pretty expensive. that´s why my movie budget will be 10-15 million dollars.

 LOL.

 I know...

But no back to being serious. Yes for outdoors, practicing with natrual light is important, but when shooting indoors, lights are a must man not because it's too dark but it just looks awful to see a 'film' that looks like a home video.

Oh ok sweet, thanks man. I got a GoPro and I wanna shoot a ton and start editing but don't know what to use. Would either of those work for me?

Vegas 9 is pretty advanced. Avid is super pro level, but also offers high end media management which is required at pro level. If you're on a Mac iMovie should be sufficent. On a PC I think some of the Sony Vegas Platinum progams are pretty good but still too advanced for beginners. I'd go to a local computer store and ask them to show you some basic video editing software, simple drag and drop stuff.

I'm on a PC, I wanna get a Mac but it's not in my budget right now. Haha. My buddy Kiefer Burrows has been slappin vids together with I Movie and putting them up and they turn out really good. I'll look around for something basic, I haven't done any editing so.. Thanks man.

Yeah Macs are good an all but they literally charge almost 2x the cost per part, not sure why though.

I've been on PC (Avid is both PC and Mac) for a while, yeah you'll have the hickups here an there, but dude for the price building a PC rig is pretty cheep. Nowadays it's cheeper to just buy a completed rig from MicroCenter for example and not have the drama that goes on with building a custom PC.

Yeah I've noticed the prices. I think I would maybe get a desktop mac and keep my pc lap top.

a good pc for editing high def footage= $ 2500/3500
a good mac for editing high def footage and epic one output= $3000/3500

not many differences its just mac is much smoother in video editing so you dont need as crazy of a processor and other hardware.

"epic one output"? You mean media from a RED camera in general?

Well, in terms of editing HD material, even a $1,200 build is sufficient.

If I were to shoot RED, I can still use the same setup, and either way, you're doing an online-offline workflow. How many of us need to actually outputting to 4K, why not pan/crop/zoom digitally taking advantage of the 4k frame size and just output to HD? Native R3D editing is dumb, frankly, the only system/software that can read R3D files natively extremely easily and in such a non-computer intensive package is Vegas 9.

So, if you're talking about editing R3D media on a budget, I'll put up a video of my $550 i5 laptop editing R3D media natively and export DPX files. That's a $1000 editing package right there, plus about an extra $300 in harddrives for all that media.

its not just about the output. rendering red footage in real time takes a lot more than just a $1200 build. everyone thinks macs are expensive just because they dont make a good computer under $1000 but when you think about it, to be serious with a pc you are going to have to spend any where from 2000 to 3000 where as a mac is just the same price and you get a computer that is much smoother and reliable than a pc. i wasnt talking about export times because they arnt really relevent since you just pop in the settings and let it be done. rendering is the main part and also working with many different file types and so forth, which a mac tends to do a little smoother. unless your going to compare an 8000 dollar pc monster to a 3000 dollar mac you wont get much smoother and reliable than a mac.

Macs are expensive because they charge too much per part... if you've done the research in building your own rig from scratch (and are ok with going with Windows OS's) you'll realize how much cheaper it is, which is why my rig is 3 years old and still going, because I'm not working with R3D media (and neither are any of us on pinkbike except for the Anthill guys). Performace is the same PC just can be built cheeper it's a world known fact that's why people still use PC in the world today and for video editing (for a program like I'm using).

DUDE a $2,500 MacPro comes with quad 2x xeon processors OK that's nice what do you expect for dropping 2.5 G's in dough, but the next level up is a $400 price jump for a few MHz performance increase, then $1200? And the build only comes with 3GB of ram (for the $2,500 version), on top of that they slam you because they're 1GB sticks, which means you have to trash those and get their 2GB sticks, a 'RAID card' should not cost $700, they charge $100 more for a $150 video card, 2TB Western Digital HDD is $100 they charge $150 for a 1TB drive.

VERDICT TO END DISCUSSION: PC FOR CHEEP MAC FOR OS RELIABILITY

I will say the iMacs (the monitor only) ones are quite decent, but once you get one the only thing you can upgrade is the RAM.

BY ALL MEANS I LIKE THE MAC OS even on the school computers, just not the retarded prices they charge for one.

I don't want to continue the which computer is more powerful for the price arguement anymore, please start one on the Amature Videographers Group (I'm on there alot)...

haha "They dont equal in awesomeness.." thanks though man.. lots of good info. I hope I can pull it to CS5 and use it there.
  • + 1
Glad you found it helpful. You have the tools there in CS5, it's just so much easier/faster in Avid Wink
  • + 1
That's sweet man. What program do you use to edit?
  • + 1
Hey. It's Avid Media Composer. Same program that did this: www.pinkbike.com/video/177040

But for really fast non complicated stuff I'll use Vegas 9 which can read my camera's AVCHD file natively unlike the program above.
