just a guess but a few years back i don't think they had the technology to make things as stong and as light as they are today, so i think they may have cut the bars shorter for weight reasons. just a guess though

The DH section at Whistler remains one of the best DH biking clips I've ever seen, as well.
Have noticed that an awful lot of the riders use small bars, though. Is there a benefit to it, or something? I always prefer wide bars, but each to his/her own I guess.
