 iv used grass to get to the bottom, works great in a thicker dh tire or tubeless tire because it dosent pack down as badly, just gotta be careful with the thinner xc tires as it also comes down to the problem of shredded tires.

 i tried that it didn't work for me, because it was in the rear wheel i had to sit on the bars and ride backwards so there wasn't much weight on the tyre

 It actually sucked big time, but he got down the trail. The grass packed up into a small ball, so we stopped half way down and put some ferns in there, and it worked fine. Easy way to get down to the bottom.

 it works i had to do it on a holiday in the middle of no ware with no bike shop for about 100 miles!
