For Garmin 800 users. Here's the trick.

1. There is not enough memory space on the device. You need to use a micro SD.
2. Create a folder called "Garmin" on the SD card.
3. Put the map file in that folder.
4. On the device go to settings (the wrench icon); go to System; go to Map; go to Map Information; Enable TrailForks.

So here is what I now understand. Garmin says good luck figuring it out. SO, The Garmin first. Person needs to get the mobile app to enable some of the features and updates to communicate with the Garmin device. Second is the use of TrailForks. There is an app but requires constant downloading of various individual trails. This is time consuming and does not allow to reroute based on trail closures. Third, Strava. I had no idea what it was but was prompted if I wanted to use it. Turns out as I had to gather info not via Garmin: Strava is an added route overlay of segments of trails usually local additions or new addition. Now for the big hit that drives everyone nuts that does not ride road. This is the mountain biker portion. TrailForks has a way to be the primary used map however, Now comes Karma. What!? Yes pay money to get enough Karma to buy a map region. Once you pay (I am not adverse to this. I donate to all sorts of charities). This was not ever discussed in concern to adding more maps. So I never knew to do it from the start. donation is made and you get to download your region, if you can find the right page on TrailForks. www.trailforks.com/tools/garminmaps Now refers to your video. It sucks. No one can see what you are doing. what needs to be discussed and shown if able to is once the download from TrailForks is made, Find it from it's location on the computer. Open the Device icon (on Macs it is the disc drive picture of a detected device, or another way to describe it as the device image to drag and drop for ejecting the detected device. double click it open, drag and drop the region map into the Folder labeled Garmin, Not any other folder inside.. Here is where you did great. You showed the devices and how to find the new maps and said to disable the others. All these things are confusing and not discussed anywhere. I had no idea about Strava, Karma, donations, map enabling, TrailForks various ways to be used, Garmin Connect.

The video helped, I was getting the IMG file on my 1030 correctly, but wasn't seeing the features on the map. It was because I had to disable the garmin maps in the activity profile. That detail is critical, and needs to be added to the map download page.

There is a lot of confusion. Strava, Connect, Trailforks, Garmin Express, Karma donations, and what it all is, and how it all works together.

Extremely Nice! but the learning curve requires Garmin and Trailforks knowledge. Thanks for neat lesson. This helped me. My 830 has a bunch of maps enabled so I disabled all but the trail forks stuff for now.

I paid the $15, downloaded and enabled the custom map, and it was older than the one I already had! How do I get the latest Trailforks data on my Garmin!?

Would I have to donate again to get an update for a map I´ve downloaded? Or does one donation contain acces to future map updates?

Side note is Garmin Express. The on the computer based connection. It allows updates as well as via mobile does.

Garmin or Trailforks needs to post better on the full use of their gear.
