Heck no I don't balance my wheels. Waste of time for mtbing....maybe more crucial for pro road cyclists, but I wouldn't even notice it on the terrain I ride. A glob of mud that sticks to the wheel would completely offset everything you worked so hard to balance anyway.

Yes it is necessary, it is a quality control issue, especially for some of the prices being charged for wheelsets nowadays, your damn right it better be perfect, and yes it affects speed, the faster you go the more effect it will have. Kudos to Calvin if all mechanics took as much pride in there work as him, many more happy riders indeed!!!

Maybe Yes for road bikes, they’re also capable of 40+ mph, but also so light you most likely wouldn’t notice it. Any kind of trail riding it’s probably overkill with the lower speeds, especially with dirt and debri that will most likely throw it off. Any one know Lance Armstrong? Ask him if he balances his wheels lol
