Red Bull Valparaiso Cerro Abajo 2013 - Photo Recap

The iconic stairs of the Valpo urban event. Hopefully this gives a little perspective on just how steep and how long they really are.

photo
The views from the top of the course are pretty stunning in every direction.

photo
That peak is the largest mountain outside of the Himalayas. Talk of a heli shuttle session is being tossed around for some time in the future.

photo
A rare misty morning early in the week in Chile.

photo
Parts of Valparaiso are a Unesco World Heritage site and are definitely worth visiting.

photo
UCI meeting with race organizer Victor Herressman and officials from the UCI and folks from RedBull.

photo
Anyone order some ramps? Most of the obstacles were built at the Oxford bikes factory in Santiago this year and delivered on a flat bed truck, giving the course workers much more time to do detail work and reinforcing work once they were in place.

photo
The ramps got a few finishing touches and reinforcements this week after being delivered.

photo
The biggest jump on the track was built in place and took 3 days to get completed. They were adding finishing touches on race morning, but it looked bigger and better than ever before.

photo
Street art is highly regarded here. This project was going in on Friday on the side of someone's house on course. Scroll down to see what it eventually looked like!

photo
The final product! Another piece of stunning Valparaiso artwork immortalizes some TLD gear!

photo
Everything is for sale. Some signs were more creative and race themed than others though.

photo
Polc decides to help baste the meat with some beers while Mitch Delfs digs in.

photo
Eliot gets his meat on during the pre race BBQ on Friday. They know how to grill meat here and the hospitality knows almost no bounds.

photo
Tricky gaps are everywhere here in Valpo. This one almost claimed a few riders as they had to air off the top set, and hopefully clear the curb while turning left int he air.

photo
Neko Mulally made his first trip down here for the event this year and loved every minute of it.

photo
Sometimes your day just doesn't go as planned. This rider got hung up on the black railing to the right and got spun around and thrown on his head in the high speed stairs. He got up and rode away after shaking out the cobwebs.

photo
Pinkbikers know Rafa. He shreds the bike park at Whistler on 2 prosthetic legs. He races everything at crankworx and he certainly has some cojones grandes. He had a massive crash here on Sunday in practice and was taken out on a backboard. To show he was ok he pulled off a leg and waved it at the crowd, much to their delight.

photo
Guido Tschugg is another first timer in Chile. he had a great time hucking himself all over the track.

photo
Mitch Delfs leads out Eliot Jackson on the Valpo stairs.

photo
Now this takes balls. 1 hander off of the Canon gap.

photo
Another sketchy stair exit. Go wide right and hug the wall, and then turn a hard left out onto the street and over the curb

photo
Eliot Jackson does his best Icarus impression and flies close to the sun. Luckily his wings didn't melt.

photo
Got crowds? This is looking up the ski jump at the very top of the course. Spectators lined both sides this year and were treated to quite the show.

photo
The dangers of urban racing! Filip Polc had a bit of a blow out when a massive roofing nail decided to make a new home in his tubeless setup.

photo
Australian TV 7 sent out a huge Tv crew to cover the event this year, and even brought in a drone.

photo
Some of the sections of road are so fast you spin out fairly quickly, time to get aero!

photo
Winner, winner chicken dinner! Under those goggles Marcello has the eye of the tiger. He kept the throttle wide open all weekend and took home the hardware on Sunday.

photo
Marcello wins his first big race right after signing with Giant and Redbull this off season. There are big things to come for the kid from Colombia.

1. Marcelo Guitierrez (Colombia)
2. Filip Polc (Slovakia)
3. Antonio Lieva (Chile)
4. Cedric Gracia (Andorra)
5. Mauricio Acuna (Chile)
