Silver Star Mountain Resort

Last week we went to Silver Star Mountain Resort to do a feature on the all new 2011 Specialized Demo 8 with Curtis Keene. Jordan and I were also able to sneak away and enjoy the resort for a few laps in between video shoots and this is what we found there.

Details inside,Silver Star is a really progressive riding resort that takes beginner and intermediate riders and helps to hone their skills and make them more confident. Advanced riders will be blown away at the quality of the trails and the speed that they can flow them at, but for myself I really like that fact that an intermediate rider can walk away from the day with a boost to their confidence thanks to the proper layout and structure of the trail system up at the resort.

Currently there are 16 bike specific runs to whet your appetite for dirt on and in the coming weeks, the resort will be opening an all new blue run, making for a total of 17 runs. You start out at the mid mountain village and can choose from green or blue runs for a quick warm up to get you to the base, where the Comet Six-Pack Express chair awaits to deliver you up some 1600 vertical feet in just under 8 minutes.

Roll down and on to the trails of your choice

At the top you'll find an easy to read trail map and staging areas for each selection of trails. A few trails funnel riders away from the peak and out towards more spur trails that will give you more corners and real dirt than you can possibly skid your tires through in one day. Mellow green runs, playful blues and ripping fast and technical black runs await everyone at Silver Star.

All take offs for jumps/features are marked so that riders know that they should take a look and then hit the jump/feature if they are confident in their own abilities to do so. Here is Sarah hitting up a mellow little jump on World Cup - note the flags to let her know that it is a jump that she is about to hit:

Apres riding is tough to find up here, so come knowing that you should get to the restaurants right after riding and then plan to shower after you eat dinner and have a refreshing beverage. The coffee shops and restaurants are open all day while the lifts are moving, so you’ll be guaranteed to get a good lunch in after logging a bunch of vertical for the first half of your day. But be prepared to eat as soon as the lifts stop spinning.

The village is easily the most colorful one you'll ever see at any resort in north America. Some may find it too much, but it's character to me and I like it!

Our crew had the pleasure of staying at the Snowbird Lodge in the Village and let me tell you - this is the nicest living a mountain biker could ever ask for. I have been to most bike resorts and numerous ski hills and I have never been able to stay in a place this nice. Summer rates are significantly lower than what you'd have to shell out in the winter, so treat yourself to some luxury - we did!

Can't wait to ride there in Sept. Last time I rode there it was on a Yokada Yosemite hardtail rental. Back then they took you to the top and you rode all the way into Vernon. 50% was on pavement. I remember I taco'd the rear wheel in the first few mins and the guide (which was mandatory) was pissed at me!

Haha!! That's awesome! How did you taco the rear wheel? And I may do the run into town the next time I go out there.

This was back around '92. Bike was full rigid so it didn't take much. Think I just hit a rock and it folded. Don't remember the trail name. I think it was bascially part of the Nordic Ski trail system you get to off of Christmas Bowl side/Bus Runs.

zzoot, if you're asking me which run into town, I don't know.. I didn't know there was more than one. mrpark, if I were guiding, would've been stoked to see a taco'd rim on a trail ride!

First time at Silver Star Today. I was very impressed! We didn't ride pipedream... wanted to respect the rating since I don't ride the jump trails very fast. The mountain is definitely an all level mountain. All levels can ride pretty much all the trails at their comfort speed. The trails were running great today!

Silver Star is good times for sure. Berms galore and cool low key vibe of a smaller resort. Silver Star is like Whistler's little bro...can still rip for sure but still trying to keep up with his big bro. Whistler is silver star on about 5 redbull and vodkas.

except without all the waiting in lines, being crowded by people and less people on the trails but still have all the trail quality and awesomeness.

Do all the resorts share the same atmosphere as Silverstar? I just really liked the whole vibe out there. Everyone was having a blast, the vibe around the village, even at night, was awesome. I just wish the lifts ran a couple hours longer, opened sooner.. I suppose that saves a lot of injury though, people getting tired and crashing towards the end of the day. Either way, can't wait to get back there in 28 days!!! Big Grin

Is Pipe Dream really hard... I've seen it in video's, but it doesn't look like a double black?
  • 2 0
Looks awesome man!! However Im in Japan so I was saying its would be a dream to make it to a resort like this!! The pictures are outstanding and looks really fun!

dj-jones1.....Pipe Dream could really mess you up, there are some sections where the consequences of high speed and/or failing to clear some of the sequential hits could have big consequences. You can either roll everything, or clear at speed, but there's not really much fun hitting it at intermediate speed (I speak with experience). Personally I don't think it is any more of a black that A-Line and DM, just seems to have a history of people crashing on PD. If there's a crash on the hill, oftentimes it seems to be on PD. So I think it is a good move from the bike park crew to try to deter non-advanced riders from getting on it. Some guys just shred that trail and you don't want noobs wobbling all over the trail or getting stuck in the super sized bermage waiting to be hit by a ripper. I'll ride it on a quiet day to keep pushing my skills, but I would keep away on a busy day just to avoid getting in the way.

Just my 2c, as a local rider.

i well wat to go there it looks so good does anyone know if norcos are the only bike they rent out
  • 1 0
yea they only rent out norco shore 3's and A-lines
  • 1 0
I agree with Gnar. Its the kind of track that if your not going for it then you should stay off it on busy days.

This mountain has the best berms I've ever seen. Truely epic. If you are from Calgary and have a COP pass, bring it along, they give a discount.

I found that whistler was much more "intense" feeling and that you had to look the part of a dirtbag mtn biker in order to fit in. But thats just me.

So, silver star or whistler? Razz

@ lux-freerider : Yeah, the music was a bit heavy...
