It was different stroke for different folks this morning. Chatting to Vittorio Gambirasio you d never have guessed it was one of the biggest weekends of the year for him. That carpet is clearly doing wonders for his confidence...

Matteo Raimondi admitted he was pretty nervous this morning. Although it s his second national championships this year he wanted to go well. Unfortunately it wasn t his day today he slipped back to 14th overall and second in the junior category. That said the number five plate isn t there on the front of his bike by accident and he s only going to get faster and faster as he gets older.

This series of corners on stage one was something we discussed with Matteo on the way up trying to work out whether it was better to carry speed and go round the outside or take the cut line which meant you needed a few pedalstrokes after to get back up to speed. One of the major skills in enduro racing is where and when you conserve your energy and those extra pedalstrokes mean that little bit more precious energy spent. From the top left going clockwise this is how Manuel Ducci Davide Sottocornola Alex Lupato and Vittorio Gambirasio approached. Davide won the stage by 1.3 seconds from Alex.

Tough running for the FRM guys on stage one. Andrea Pirrazolli destroyed a wheel and Denny Lupato tore his mech off. That s how racing goes some times.

A small slip on the roots left Andrea Bruno running for the next patch of ground to get set and back on the bike. While he couldn t regain the title he won in 2011 he finished seventh today despite carrying a shoulder injury.

Eighth for Cam Cole today a cracking result for his first Superenduro race and he undoubtedly would have finished higher if he hadn t had chain problems on stage one. We would say that seeing riders of Cam s calibre at these enduro races is a great thing for the sport. We re sure Cam wouldn t mind us also saying that it s also a good thing for the sport that riders like him aren t just showing up to these races and winning. It shows how tough it is to win one of these even if you have top ten World Cup DH pace.

Franceso Colombo was probably today s biggest surprise smashing his way to fifth overall. His experience racing world cup downhill clearly helped on the roots of stage two and four .

At the halfway point Lupato was clearly feeling good... It s also worth noting that tow riders got disqualified at the time check because they didn t make themselves available for the doping controls.

After the time check Alex Lupato was on one clawing back time on Davide Sottocornola to eventually take the win by a mere 1.3 seconds. This weekend the two of them were a class apart and Manuel Ducci wasn t joking about not feeling good taking third place a full 17 seconds back.

After such a close hard-fought race tensions were clearly running high. We don t know what Davide was talking to Trippa about but it seemed to be fairly heated.

There are trophies points and jerseys for the winner but the first thing on Alex s mind after crossing the line was beer. We approve.

Top report, great words and pics. Enduro is slowly but surely getting stronger and stronger. Come on Red Bull lets get it live covered just like Downhill.

I was privileged enough to ride the event today. One thing that stands out is how well the organizers put everything together. The prologue was just so spectator friendly last night running through the village people shouting every rider on to the finish. The start this morning off the ramp and Enrico Guala's interviewing every biker before proceeding off the ramp was so cool. Madesimo is a beautiful Italian village and what a stellar job these guys did., I plan on returning next year. Riders safety is first priority here, bikes need to be sorted and rider protection is top of the list.

The stages were challenging, especially the second stage...... some seriously rooted and rutted stuff and fatigue on the last run had me hanging on for lifeSmile Trust me, overall fitness does make a difference. But the thing that stood out the most apart from the slog to the top was how much everyone was part of one team....just good fashioned proper mountain biking, cool trails and a friendly vibe whether pro or beginner. What a awesome atmosphere. Here's to superenduro growing and growing!!

Marzocchi has their shit together when it comes to aesthetics of their forks. God damn that green Nomad and red Marzocchi look awesome. In my opinion they have the coolest looking forks.
  • 4 1
It's funny how it was either Marzocchi or Fox forks, maybe seen one RockShox fork and that's about it. I like the look of the Marzocchi's better in my opinion.
  • 2 0
Those red marzocchis with the gold uppers look fantastic! Almost everyone rocking marzocchi hey

There are some in the photos wearing protection, probably a rule as 'finnrambo' wrote. The average age in DH, in the top tier is 24. You take more risks at that age. Enduro must have an average age higher than that with a bit more sense. DH youngers should definitely have it: Taylor Vernon in Val di Sol is case in point.
  • 1 0
it seems in enduro you're either very young and grew up an enduro specialist or you're an old downhiller (vouilloz, barel...) I think the protection rule will fade out as the old downhillers retire

Zochi forks, Zochi forks everywhere ...
  • 2 0
i dont know if anybody noticed, but, 90% of the photos have marzocchi forks on 'em and any other riders that were not sporting 'zocchi forks were either off focus or the forks actually covered? hmmm somethings fishy here.

Marz is heavily involved in Enduro in Europe. I went through again and agree there are a lot of Marz forks, but the Rockshox and Fox forks were just as prominent in the photos. I would not be too quick to call conspiracy on this one, especially as we all know PB LOVES Fox! :-)

I like how people are running marzocchi 55's. Just got one recently, it's day and night compared to my 2006 AM1.

 YES TO THIS!
  • 2 0
i love the 55. but remember, this is an italian enduro series. i would be surprised if i didn't see so many zokes.
  • 1 0
Yes, of course. I considers that too. Nice to see so many 55's in the environment they were built for - gnarly Italian trails.
  • 1 1
Yeah whats up with the reporting. I followed the link to results, I dont speak Italian, I can see each stage result, but the lverall makes no sense! How ablut posting results and also post the womens they are also riders ya know, some good piccs but wierd disjointed reporting, props for being first online though!

Nice work Matt, really enjoyed the coverage. Not sure what crybaby was whining about. I like it, and personally know how hard it is to cover an enduro race. Great work, keep it up!
  • 2 0
why is it that in enduro everybody's wearing back protection, and in DH you barely see any protectors?
  • 1 0
protection slows people down, I don't see anyone wearing protection in the photos... but if they are it's probably a rule
  • 2 0
they're still conscious that sh*t happens.
  • 1 0
its mandatory in lots of european races to wear a back protector.
  • 1 0
Yeah exactly! You have to wear a back protector or a backpack w/ a good protection. It's a Superenduro rule Smile
  • 3 0
like in val d'isere last year it was mandatory to wear elbow pads - just local rules.
  • 3 0
Marzocchi - All hail coil and lots of oil!!!
  • 2 0
Heaps of 55's because the race is longer than the recommended service interval for the other forks!
  • 3 0
 Hell yeah Lars!! PNW represent.
  • 1 0
 for the record:
8th was MILIVINTI Marco
9th SCOTT Mark (not eighth )
and 10th COLE Cameron ( not eighth )

Smile

 Going strong Lars!

I love to see so many Marzocchi forks in the mix. Wish I could get sweet custom colors like they have!
  • 1 0
Who is the italian womens champion!?
  • 2 0
Chiara Pastore in the Elite, Laura Rossin got the Master's class title Smile
  • 1 0
 Grande Alex!
  • 1 1
 Shave the side burns dude.
  • 1 0
 doping controls?
  • 1 0
UCI or the Italian Federation, can request an antidoping control, because it was also the italian championship, not only a Superenduro's PRO Smile
  • 1 0
did they do doping controls? I don't really care about them tbh as I'd be amazed if more than 2-3 riders were doping if not zero but it still kills the fun enduro vibe
  • 2 0
Yeah they do them at every national race. Top 5 overall plus 5 random ppl extracted if I remember correctly... Btw, sadly last year there was a doping case, at a french enduro race..
