Andreu Lacondeguy signs with Mondraker and Unit

Just in time for the Red Bull Rampage, the bike scene’s wild man teams up with two new brands. For him, no jump is too far and such a thing as too much airtime does not exist. With his tricks, Andreu pushes the limits and continuously takes his skills one step ahead. At the same time, it is really important to him to have partners that think like him. In Mondraker and Unit, Andreu has found two sponsors who are a perfect fit and can look forward to the coming season prepared better than ever.

Read on,During this season, Andreu has once again set the standards on a mountain bike by sending it over 40-50ft. gaps with every technical trick you can think of while filming for the new “We are Family 2” movie. Andreu loves riding bikes and so he needs different bikes for different purposes, whether it is DH, slopestyle, dirt, BMX or even XC, Andreu does it all. Andreu needs many toys and has high demands when he pushes the limits of the sport. The fact that he has fun on more than one kind of bike was also one of the reasons he decided for Mondraker as his new ride: “Mondraker build all different mountain bikes as well as BMX – that way I don’t have to decide for one or the other. My new DH bike barely weighs 15,5 kilos! Plus, it’s really great for me that they are from Spain just like me. Kona was a great bike partner for some years and I’m grateful for their support that helped me get to where I am today, but we all change and sometimes need new challenges, so it is the right time for me to move on.” The young gun from Barcelona will be joining a brand that works with world-class DH rider Fabien Barel. So Andreu will be a great addition for Mondraker to expand their gravity program. The Mondraker Crew is really excited about this new project: “Andreu is now part of the Mondraker family and we can’t wait to accompany him to all the contests coming up. Also, he will help us develop a completely new product line evolving the Zero suspension system in the freestyle category”. For the Red Bull Rampage this coming weekend, Andreu will already be riding with his new DH bike.

The fact that not everyone can keep up with Andreu’s Energy and attitude is not really surprising. At the same time Andreu doesn’t just go for any brand that wants to work with him, it must be the right fit for his style and personality. That is why it took so long until he found a clothing label that suits him perfectly. From today, Andreu rides with the gear from Unit clothing, a brand that has its roots in the FMX and BMX scene and is about as unconventional as Andreu himself. But Unit is not completely new to the mountain biking scene, since they already work with athletes such as Chris Kovarik, Kelly McGarry or Caroline Buchanan. The brand’s claim could almost be describing the rider himself: "In a world where mediocrity reigns and political correctness dictates youth culture, Unit embodies a spirit of resistance."

After the Red Bull Rampage Andreu will be finalizing his new partners for 2011. So in case you are still interested in working with the absolute freestyle Icon of biking, then don’t hesitate to contact us. In 2011 Andreu will keep pushing the limits and build his own stunts and projects, so expect some new high-end clips and photos to be released in the next season. He will also concentrate on a few key events with bigger jumps, such as the 26TRIX, Crankworx or other big jump contests.

why are so many people biased agaisnt kona on pinkbike? first of all, they have made some shit bikes and some great bikes. The number of comments i have seen saying "the only kona that gets my respect" and similar stuff. second of all think about what they have done mountain biking, they inject a huge amount of cash into the development of bike parks. They are also one of the few companies these days whose bikes are not desinged by specialised. Okay they would never be my first choice but I still think highly of them.
  • 23 4
Because on Pinkbike, hating on Konas gets you respect and props. And we all know props mean prizes!
  • 9 1
I think they genuinely have had some quality issues in the past, probably a result of making so many bikes. But Honestly right now, I think they have some amazing bikes and I think they are rebuilding their rep.
Losing Andreu isn't a bad thing for this company, when was the last time he actually did anything they would be proud of anyway?

Maybe Kona dumped him? Pussing out on Crankworks would not have made his sponsor very happy.
  • 4 0
I am friends with a few people at Kona and let me tell you what.....they can ride and party with the best of 'em!! Hell, I'd put Angi up against half the guys on here on a DH run OR FR stunt line!! And their factory has a full court basketball hoop, pool table, weights, AND an espresso machine!!
  • 2 0
People hate on Norco too, just like Kona. Is it cause they have such a big line of bikes? I don't know.
  • 32 12
So sweet. Good to see him on a decent brand, and makes me giddy to see him turning his back on Kona. that should wipe a smug look or two off some faces.
  • 18 8
I lost my respect for him after he pulled out of Crankworx and he was part of my team for that competition. He pulled out because Whistler slope-style was too small apparently.
  • 10 12
but what an epic reason/excuse for not entering!
  • 48 2
No, just a lame excuse for not doing his job. He just wanted to party not ride.
  • 7 3
on the contrary, I charge you with finding a BETTER excuse for doing just that! I'm not arguing that he backed out for good reasons, only that he had a wicked excuse for doing so.

Why not do both? In my younger years I raged until 5 am then got up for work at 6. Why can't he do the same?
  • 22 1
'raging' until 5 and working at 6 is not the same as partying till youre passed out then trying to win one of the highest ranked slopestyle comps out there
  • 9 0
Then why even pretend that he was going to ride in the first place, then making lame excuses for not? Just be real.
  • 28 1
At crankworx he was a whiny little bitch. Speaking to him I got the impression that he didn't even want to be there. He told me the "too small" excuse too. He just sat on his bike watching everyone else during the vw best trick. Thats not "wicked" in any way. Meet the guy then come speak to me. Lost a lot of respect for him, shame because hes such a good rider. Sponsors can't be too happy with him showing up and just sitting on his ass, my bet is the split with kona was two way.

youd probably be a whiny little bitch too if you had every kid and his dog asking why you werent riding and pretending theyre your best buddy his 'split' with kona was his contract running out
  • 13 0
someone give him some glasses then coz that drop at crankworx was fucking massive.
  • 9 1
yeah hes full of himself and shit, semenuk is a lot better rider and person prally (dont know him)
  • 6 7
He told me the drops were too big, he didnt want to kill himself, thats weid that hes wanting to go bigger next year?!?! Dunno, whatever! Hes amazing, and a nice guy, stop judging him, hes cool...

Styke, sorry if you're a fanboy. But meet the guy. Also I'm not a kid, I was media. And my dogs were at home.

He did ride for a great company before this current switch. Kona has been around a long time now, and still makes great bikes, the whole quality thing I still don't understand since I have been riding Konas for years now and never experienced any problems. I have never met Andreu so I am not going to say one thing or another about his character, but I do know that I was bummed that he split from Kona. Goodluck to him in the future.
  • 10 5
Konas are like clits. Every cunt has one.

I remember seeing him at Qashqai in London and it was a really windy day. Nevertheless everyone tried to put on a good show for the crowds, alot of world renowned riders were there, it wasnt the best riding experience of their lives but entertaining the crowds is what the sponsors pay them to do and in the end the event went quite well. Lacondeguy on the other hand once again whined all day maybe did two runs in total the sum of the tricks was probably a taking the piss bar hump. It doesnt matter how good a rider he is, I've never really liked his attitude and there are far better role models out there. Still pleased to see him sign with a new company maybe it'll get him more motivated for events.
  • 1 1
he can do whatever he wants he's his own person, some people just like riding, having fun and not competing.
  • 17 1
If I was the team manager for Kona I would of dumped him as well. They pay him to through down in events and he decide's that he is not going to ride a course just because he think's it is to small? Your job is to ride your bike, quit bitching and do your damn job. Bearclaw made his thoughts about the course very clear, but he is a professional and threw down anyway.
  • 3 1
Totally agree with you - and the course was massive Andreu just hides behind the "oh its too small" excuse because he knows that because he cannot trick anything other than pretty much dirt jumps. He would've gotten owned in that event. When he did the double back flip and won a few years ago the rest of his run wasn't amazing. Guys like Semenuk, Claw, Groves, Mccaul can destroy him in any style of riding
  • 1 1
me too...I agree with J-Peters....actually, beside the Claw...McCaul make his comments too...but went for it anyhow...so, I honestly don't see Lacondeguy as a pro rider...just because you go big and shit doesn't make you a pro....Pro is a whole package, and one of them is giving respect to all eventhough you don't like it or just chicken to go for it...
  • 1 0
whatd bearclaw say about the course
  • 22 9
Honeslty, I have virtually zero respect for Andreu. The only way he goes big in the past while is with his big FMX ramp that he just moves back, moves back, moves back until it's giant. He pussied out of the biggest slopestyle course EVER because 'it's too small' and just sat at the bar watching it. And he's said in interviews that he wants SS courses to be a bunch of giant jumps with no tech(I'm paraphrasing here). What a chump.
  • 7 1
 This ^
  • 9 2
So thats why he's doing Rampage, big jumps and no tech...

Rolleyes
  • 2 3
You forget, you can pick your own like. He'll probably just do some big drops and jumps and bypass any tech. Lines are rampage are all worn in and super smooth according to the pros up there.
  • 2 0
 I see.
  • 15 1
Also, for everyone who thinks I lost respect because he backed out of Crankworx.... that is not why.

Maybe he truly didn't feel comfortable on the course and didn't want to risk injury, which is perfectly fine. I wouldn't look down on someone for that.... it was a huge course. It's just the fact that he basically made fun of it after he pussied out. "Oh it's tiny, it sucks, it's gay, etc etc"

He could have straight up said, "I wasn't comfortable on this years course and didn't want to risk injury." That would have been fine in my books.
  • 4 0
I agree he have said that ^ but I also think that this years course wasn't too good. Far too many wooden features that lost the flow I think ( I wouldn't know I haven't rode it ) I thought it was far better when it was just huge doubles and one or two big hucks, there would have been some huge tricks thrown down if this was the case!
  • 7 0
Lost the flow? The only place people ever had to pedal was between the hot tub time machine and the kona mustache... oh and maybe a bit to clear the judges drop. I thought it was a great course... definitely the most exciting one to date as far as live viewing goes.
  • 5 2
hey unhallowed, andreu is a killer downhill racer too and used to be highly ranked on the national spanish series. he's no wuss to tech. you can see him shredding in earthed 2 europa or whatever it was called
  • 5 2
My basis for losing respect for him is not(for the most part) based on his skill, it's his attitude and outlook towards the sport. He can ride, he just doesn't seem to want to. And I find it hard to respect or cheer for someone who's heart doesn't seem to be in it.
  • 3 0
Andreu is killer on massive doubles. But, he is nothing when it comes to drops and technical features. He only dominates when a course is made of massive jumps. Btw, does anyone know where to find a trailer or an information on "We are Family 2". Super keen to see what he's doing in this segment...
  • 3 0
Well we're gonna find out if that's the case on sunday...
  • 3 0
he pulls out of crankworx colorado every year for some reason. he complains about courses not being big enough yet he cant even trick drops. in my opinion i don't think he is a good image for mtb.

Your all being the 'whiney little bitch' with this ranting. He is very talented rider that deserves some respect.

Unhallowed - Who cares if he pulls the ramp back bit by bit until its giant? I don't see you out there hitting such massive jumps so get the f*ck off his case.
  • 9 3
I'm also not some super awesome sponsored rider who think he's the best in the world and bashes how small mountain bike jumps are all the time. Go be a fanboy somewhere else Jervis.
  • 4 5
I'm sure he feels the same way about you, in fact, who do you think you are? How do you figure you have the cahonies to judge this man, for anything he has, or hasn't done in his life and or career. Let's see you throw down like him, and gain the presence he has in our sport. Sure your not "some super awesome sponsored rider", that's why your on the internet calling Andreu a "chump".

Jealousy is a pungent scent my fellow Pinkbike commenter.

Great to see a great little Gold Coast - Australia born company reaching out and branding with some awesome international MTB riders!!!
  • 7 0
You do all realize that Andreau, even though he's an amazing rider, will probably not get as much media coverage or movie segments riding for a company which basically has no mainstream presence or influence. There are definite advantages to riding for larger companies, but maybe he just needed a change.
  • 3 1
thought Mountain biking wasn't big enough for Andreau and he was going to stick to moto? I dunno i remember reading something like that in Decline. But W/e good to see him out again Props!
