Last fall, Ian Provo (pro skier), Neil Provo (pro snowboarder), and myself embarked on a trip of a lifetime in our own backyard. We rode the "forgotten trail" of the Uinta mountain range to connect several seldom fished rivers. We got lost, carried our bikes over hundreds of down trees, rode some of the best singletrack of our lives, camped at over 10,000 feet, caught and ate fish, almost got struck by lightning, laughed, saw the fall leaves at their best, got soaked by rain every day, experienced all-time sunrises and sunsets, and generally had an amazing and unforgettable time. Check out the new issue of Freehub Magazine for the full story. Enjoy the video and thanks to the trip supporters Diamondback bikes, Kenda, Clif Bar, Goal Zero, Orvis, Nemo, Backcountry, Camelbak and Teva.

Wow!!! I live in SLC and spend alot of time in the Wasatch. At 24 years old I should be all over these types of trips. The Unitas have so much and I have only been there once in the 6 years I have lived here. Shame on me... I should spend less time shredding Empire and more time riding some single track in the Uintas. Great job guys! That second to last photo takes me on adventure just looking at it.

Take the bull by the horns and book a trip to them ASAP is my recommendation then haha!

It's going to be a lot of hike bike. No bike trails up that way.

@WillCoates The funny thing is they are 45 min from my house hahah
  • 1 1
RLoganSx, Deadman's Pass is 45 min from your house? Do you live in Wyoming? That's easily 4.5 hours drive from Salt Lake City.
  • 1 0
No I was referring to the Uintas in general. I can be to the west entrance in 45 min to an hour depending.
  • 1 0
Jeromev- Where are you getting 4.5 hours from?? I google mapped it and its like an hour and 45 mon from SLC.

Uintas cover a lot of territory so drive times vary a bit. From SLC I can be riding on the west side near Kamas in about an hour but if you're heading for the eastern end near Flaming Gorge it might be 4ish. Pretty sure Christmas Meadows is around 2 hours regarless of if you go through Kamas or Evanston.

If you're looking to ride up there next year start out with looping Little South Fork/Camp Hollow/Shingle Creek and Upper Setting Road/Bench Creek. There's some excellent primitive singletrack up there and not dumbed down like most the riding in Northern UT. The place would be a gold mine if the FS district up there didn't frown on mountain biking.

The Wolverine Trail system where they start is close to Christmas Meadows and is ~2 hours from SLC. The biking looked fun, but the moto trail riding up there is where is at! Too far from everywhere for any mtn bikers to care enough to build a trail system, but the ATV/MC users are all very respectful and more than willing to share

Little South Fork trail just west of Mill Hollow off of Wolf Creek/Hwy 35 is a good out and back to break ones self into Uinta riding. Upper setting rd looped with Shingle Creek is hard to beat too

They have some great trails up there... I prefer to hike them for a good 3-4 day trip... easier and not as much hike a bike... I'm sure in a few years biking will be more accessible. As of now, hiking and ATV in the Uinta's is where it's at. Unless you don't mind more hike a bike than actual bike...

Ah, I was thinking about getting there via Evanston. Didn't think there was a way through to the North side via Kamas. My bad man.
  • 1 0
Yeah, I think you can access Christmas Meadows area either way via Mirror Lake Highway. Not sure which way is faster, probably 2ish either way. Just noticed I crossed up my creek names in the loops I mentioned above, should be Little South Fork/Camp Hollow/Bench Creek and Upper Setting Road/Shingle Creek.

East coast transplant turned Utah evangelist (no not in that sense). The Uintas are a wonder. They are a lesser known wonder even to the locals. Although, I have never biked up there for any distance the fly fishing is that hot on the lakes and streams (although the streams are small so the population is small - be gentle). If you haven't been to Utah or only seen Moab, there is so much to be seen. I haven't even scratched the surface after 8 years.
This film was wonderful by the way. Great long exposures. Kudos.

i like the way pinkbike share and spread the spirit of adventure mountain biking, lately quite many articles that have been presented and i like them.

I wonder if they could do this without hitting any Wilderness land. That would be sick as I live in Utah as well...
  • 5 1
We stayed out of the Wilderness areas, there are still a few trails in the Uintas that are open to bikes! Definitely some serious hike-a-bike though due to down trees and stuff.

Looks like they were north of the wilderness area in Wasatch Nation Forest.

@ericporter Hey man, I ride DH with Jonesy Fedderson from time to time. Thanks for pushing him to keep on the mtb's. He is going to kill it on the squishy bikes before long haha.

Awesome. High time to escape to the Uintas for a while....... coming summer 2015 for sure. Hike a bike just keeps you honest and detracts the "softcore".

Damn it!! I want to make some X-days ride but here in the desert I cannot ride more than 50km a day without need 3 litres of water and a shower... Frown

 Ian Provo (pro photographer/videographer)!
Not just an awesome adventure but stunningly good images as well. Nice work guys.
Did you pass by Spiirt Lake by chance?

This is incredible. I went and rode some single track above moon lake in the Uintah's this year that I highly recommend.

The Uintas are some of the wildest lands in the lower 48.
  • 4 1
Utah in general is wild as hell when compared to really any other state. Wide open spaces. Mountains to deserts. Want to escape? Come to Utah.

upstate new york is pretty wild. the Adirondacks are nuts

So much fun exploring the Uintas if you don't mind some route finding. Definitely some hidden gems up there.

Now it really SUCKS to be stuck at work ;/ And it's good moment to stress how much i HATE winter.

That was cool!. One of my favorite rides is Shingle creek, and pack a fishing pole.
  • 1 0
Shingle is so fun. Great scenery and tech challenges and usually some route finding and adventurous stream crossings. You typically climb Upper Setting Kris or shuttling?

What a great adventure! Trout and ramen....yum!
