Introduction
The Osprey Canadian National Enduro Championship (CNEC), presented by NOBL, is a subsidiary of the Osprey BC Enduro Series (BCES), and shares the common interest of working in collaboration with host communities to provide an authentic adventure for riders looking to compete, travel and experience mountain biking, through Enduro Racing.

Registration will open on February 1st, 2016. It will be through CCN Bikes, however, check our website www.bcenduro.com and our Facebook for updates.

The BCES/CNEC will continue to support trail networks which our races use through the donation of 10% of all race entries, back to the local trail club/society. We’ve donated more than $20,000 back to local trail clubs in host communities. Thank you to all of the local clubs/societies that have welcomed us into their communities! We also support local volunteers by outfitting them in Kazoom jerseys, the official clothing sponsor of both BCES and CNEC

The Osprey BC Enduro Series are three joint event series, all organized by Global Riding Adventure and the BC Enduro Series.
1) Osprey BC Enduro Series West (BCES) - Revelstoke and West
2) Osprey BC Enduro Series East (BCES) - Revelstoke and East
3) Osprey Canadian National Enduro Championships (CNEC), presented by NOBL Wheels

The BCES and CNEC will always be about exploring new mountain bike trails, having adventures riding with buddies, weekend trips away, chill climbs, fast timed descents....

Goals
The goal of the CNEC is to foster a more competitive and legitimate Enduro racing culture/venue for Enduro riders in Canada. The CNEC will use existing BCES venues and will focus on track difficulty, competitiveness, racing and as always, riding the most unique trails, while having a ridiculously good time! Ultimately, naming the fastest Enduro Rider in Canada!

We would also like to take this opportunity to announce that 2016 will be the selection year for the Osprey National Enduro Development Team (NED). For more information, see below.

"It would be amazing to have a Canadian national Enduro series. It could give Enduro in Canada some new life, by encouraging new riders to have a future to strive for and returning riders the chance to show their abilities on a bigger stage. Getting the chance to compete against the best in our country you can only further your skills and expand the sport to new levels."

Origin/History
The CNEC was created throughout the summer of 2015, by the BCES team. 2016 will be the CNEC’s first year of operation, however, the CNEC is built within the framework and model of the BCES, which is Canada’s largest Enduro Racing Series and the most attended enduro mountain bike race series in Canada, with more than 1700 competitors last year.

"It's very exciting to have another national-level series for mountain biking in Canada. With the rise of Enduro and Canada's world-class playground for mountain biking, it seems only natural. The BC Enduro Series has already given me some of my best racing memories, which I hope everyone gets the chance to experience. Hats off to what Megan and Ted have been able to put together with the BC Enduro Series in such a short period. I can't wait to see where this series goes."

Affiliations
The BCES and CNEC are under the operation of Global Riding Adventures, so you know we're mainly about drinking beer and riding bikes. But occasionally, we like to try hard and win races!

The BCES/CNEC family of races is affiliated with the following Enduro Races:
North American Enduro Cup
Trans-New Zealand Multi-Day Enduro
Trans-BC Six Day Enduro
• Agreements with local tourism destination marketing organizations and bike clubs

The CNEC has been built upon three years of direct Enduro Racing experience by Owner, Megan Rose and Event Director, Ted Morton.

The BCES and CNEC are also the only enduro mountain bike race series in Canada, that has partnered with the International Mountain Bike Association in order to empower local communities, educate event organizers and provide instruction on how a collaborative-based approach to sustainability built trails, creates successful events!

A Canada-wide Enduro series would offer more opportunity for many talented locals to compete at a higher level without travelling globally and bring many more racers and spectators to mountain venues and towns. Who doesn't love cheering for the hometown girl or boy? - Nick

"It would give much-needed exposure for many Canadian companies looking to directly market to potential customers in their distribution areas. I work with a few sponsors who are more stoked on Eastern Canada events versus my races in the USA and France. A large Canadian series could also lead to funding for our top athletes wishing to travel more and fighting the current CAD exchange. As an emerging Pro racer, my next step is competing in a nationwide series like [this]. If such a series were in [truly across] Canada, the cost savings would go to coaching, nutrition and better equipment. In theory, bringing me closer to the podium. See you in Rossland, July 31st!"
-Nick van Egmond | Pro Enduro Racer | Ottawa, Ontario

Rationale
The CNEC aims to be the quintessential enduro proving grounds for Canada. It is aimed at highlighting Junior, Grassroots and rising Pro Athletes alike, while ensuring that everyone in Canada gets an opportunity to explore different riding destinations and have massive adventures on their bikes! The rationale for a three (3) race series is ideal, as a series such as the BCES with it’s six (6) scheduled events requires a large commitment both monetarily and time. The CNEC is also more accessible for participants living on the East Coast of Canada (The CNEC places two events within weeks of each other and the EWS strategically, to accommodate racers from the East Coast).

Osprey National Enduro Development Team
2016 Osprey Canadian National Enduro Development Team - (National Enduro Development Team)

The Osprey BCES and CNEC presented by NOBL Wheels in conjunction with Blueprint Athlete Development (Joel Harwood) are looking to foster a progression based development program for youth enduro riders. This programming will be administered in conjunction with BCES and CNEC series of events.

The development team will operate in 2017 and will use 2016 as the selection year. The team will host, a maximum for 2017, of twelve (12) athletes. Click here for the selection process.

The intent of the National Enduro Development Team is to provide a long-term athlete development approach to enduro racers across Canada. Our goal is to raise the bar for every cyclist, coach, team, and sponsor. The program will be designed as a collaborative effort between the Head Coach, community coaches and the athletes themselves. Team members will receive ongoing feedback and program input from the National Team, daily training and testing with community coaches, and invitations to off-season training camps.

At BCES races, athletes will be encouraged to remain with their local team. At CNES and EWS events, National Enduro Development Team members will be offered additional training and race support.

The goal of this team is to provide athletes with every opportunity to succeed and to raise the bar for every athlete. It is our sincere hope that National Enduro Development Team members will share what they have learned, model for teammates, become leaders in their respective communities, and lead the next generation of Canadian cyclists.

Great series obviously - Awesome venues and format. That said you can't call it the Canadian National Championship until there are events in at least 3-4 provinces and at least 1 in the East... Imagine the California Enduro Series or the Oregon Enduro Series calling itself the US National Enduro Championship... A cat is a cat is a cat - You can't ask it to bark.

Organize an east coast race and pitch it to them.

Sorry. Not a "National" anything if it all happens in BC.

Cant call it a national unless it is a national....no brainer!!!

Sooooo...they're all in BC but it's a National series?
  • 10 4
Gotta start somewhere and they explain how they are trying to make it easier for easterners to travel out west.
  • 10 1
Brule is spot on, we're looking for some keen organizers on the east coast for 2017, we've already chatted to some interested people! If you're an event organizer, feel free to reach out to us. We'd love to grow this for 2017! Thanks Brule, and good question Phil and norcodhrider

How is 3 BC races being called a national Series? Don't get me wrong this is great, but shouldn't there be at lease one eastern race?
  • 11 3
Gotta start somewhere and they explain how they are trying to make it easier for easterners to travel out west.
  • 5 5
how is this different then last season, besides the name? Don't they have any local race series out east like this? At least have 1 race out east.
  • 18 4
Considering this is being run by two people who live in BC, how about you offer to host an eastern race or two and then pitching the idea of a truly national series to them? That would be the easiest way to get what you're after.
  • 8 4
@Wayneparsons Nailed it! Everybody whines, nobody does anything. You want a hone race, make it happen! Otherwise appreciate the work of others where it exists. Great series!
  • 7 4
I don't see anyone whining just questioning callng this a national series. I have to agree, if the organizers want to have the status of a national series then its up to them to ensure there are races across the country. Until they can secure races out east keep it a western championship.
  • 2 4
But then there is no national championship, and in the name of advancing the sport discipline within Canada, that is important. Other countries with a much smaller geographic footprint can organize a cross country series much easier than we in Canada. I'll say it again. If you want it, help make it happen!
  • 5 3
You can only force progression so much. If there were already a couple other series in other provinces and they all got together and decided we needed a national championship then sure! But we are only going into the third season of this Enduro BC series. What happens next year? Call it a world series within just BC? Let's be honest and realistic and call it what it is.
  • 4 3
I love that they are starting a new series, even if its just in one province. This takes an incredible amount of hard work, and Ted and Megan are nailing it. Starting out in BC is a great way to gain exposure in order to grow the series in the future. Look at how far they have put this series in 3 years. Its incredible. It has become the best race series in the country, as well I would argue, the best form of racing. Like I said, if YOU want a race on home soil, then YOU have to organize it. Get involved.
  • 3 4
You didn't answer any of my questions. You keep on repeating the same thing over and over again. Why did you reply?
  • 2 3
@makripper it isn't about progression in riding as much as it is about growing exposure and popularity. You, as an informed rider in the community know this may not represent Canada's national terrain. However, in the name of drawing attention and potentially better sponsorship a national series is a big deal, even if only by name. Also, imagine if an Enduro event similar to the World Champs were a couple years away, we at least wood have a "National series winner " to way the colours.
  • 4 3
Why can't they follow in the Canadian nation DH series foot steps then? If you are going to promote national, it has to be national, otherwise it's not fair to anyone. The bc enduro series is still in it's infancy and has lots of work to do to make it better. They've done great work, but it still needs alot of work. I understand the main attraction being more attention for sponsors, but quality and growth are more important. The issue, for me, is that it is what it looks like. For a national series they could have at least gone to Alberta for 1 race. I'm in the middle of southern BC and its only an 8 hr drive max to sweet riding in Alberta. I wonder how many people travelled from back east to race in the BC enduro series last season? I know the first year there was tons of albertans, this year there was alot less due to the accessibility. I also find it hard to believe that lots of unsponsored guys, or even with minimium sponsorship would take the trip from back east, even from a major hub like Toronto.
  • 1 2
Much like you said earlier about the answers being the same thing over and over, you continue to ask why they don't organize out east. The organizers also are from bc. If you feel such a passionate drive to have full national representation, then have a go at organizing an Ontario race from your home on southern bc. Not easy. Local races need local people. If this is the only attempt to organize a large scale series.of Enduro in Canada, it gets to choose it's name. Stop complaining and questioning-get involved!
  • 3 4
The last half is exactly my point here. Why isn't there a series out east? or in alberta? Is there demand for it? have 3 races in the interior of BC isn't national. If there was even 1 in alberta, which is damn close and still in western canada, maybe, just maybe that wouldn't be so bad because at least they would be trying. You are giving them excuses at this point. I am sure they could find some affiliates in ontario or quebec. Why is that so hard???
  • 5 2
 Hey Mark;

I love your passion and there is so many great things you mention.

Our race series is very high quality, we really focus on the atmosphere and about high quality trails and really it's about travelling with your bike to ride the best trails with your buddies.

You're right, it would be ideal to have a race in some of the eastern provinces.

We have actually two regional races in Alberta.

The goal with creating this year was to start the process, we've got a riders from out east coming to the CNEC, and I'll be looking to for feedback from them if it's of value to them.

This year is really an exploration year, if we seen an interest from riders and event organizers, we'll consider making the push and investing into putting on events in the eastern provinces.

We already have an interested party coming from Ontario to see the event from a management point and whether his local trails/races would work.

Really appreciate all of your enthusiasm, if you want to get involved, we're always looking for volunteers, event organizers and of course, riders!
Feel free to email me if you'd like to get involved, maybe you can assist with us branching out!

Thanks!
  • 3 4
Mak, again all your points can be answered with: if you want a truly national series then you know what to do. Otherwise you're just complaining about something that you have the power to change.
  • 4 1
I think people need to realize it takes time to build a series that stretches across the country and there isn't enough of a presence on the east coast yet with enduro racing. If you look at the XC national series for the past however many years its been all east coast for 95% of the time. Let's be honest too, who doesn't want to travel to BC to ride bikes in races that have better trails compared to most EWS races..
  • 5 2
Everybody stay tuned for 2017…………… I'll be organizing the steepest most tech course yet in Winnipeg.
  • 2 1
@SlinkySammy wins with comment of thread. Good stuff. @makripper if you are so sure that they can find affiliates, then you also should be able to find said affiliates. It isn't the responsibility of two race organizers from BC to create community buy-in across the country. Maybe, just maybe people in places without races will feel the same way you do about this being called National and will actually try and be those affiliates you are so sure are chomping at the bit to be part of the action.
  • 3 4
wane. I am pointing out the obvious. you are regugitating the same old "do it yourself" crap. I've been trail building for ages doing plenty myself so stop the pointless drabble. @eveono I agree, but is it worth the plane ticket to midpack in an open cat for 1 race, let alone 3 that are spaced way too far apart? Can you declare something a national series that resides in one province. even better, all within 300km?

@SlinkySammy i'm sure these some fun trails in Manitoba.
  • 2 2
One thing that isn't mentioned is that its the role of a national governing body to bring together organizers across the country in order to have a national series. Again, this enduro series is being run by two people from BC. They are not a governing body. Anyone can petition a governing body to adopt a national enduro series. There could be a Canada Cup Enduro if someone wants it bad enough.
  • 5 3
My own personal opinion here is this:

This is, by far, the biggest and baddest enduro race series in the Canada, taking place on the biggest and best trails in the country, without question, which are home to (the majority of) the best riders in the country, or at least the most serious and passionate ones. All of Canada is invited to come and compete, hence Canadian Nationals... makes sense to me.
  • 3 2
@WanderingWheels Exactly! I rarely understand people who take the position of complaining about everything. Would it be great if we in Canada had a giant, 13 round series that had terrain representing all of our provinces and territories? For sure! That would be incredible. We don't however, and we do have this. It is an excellent series that has shown growth and improvement year after year. In a few years there will be Ontario dates, certainly Alberta dates, maybe even Quebec or even the Maritime and this silly debate will be forgotten. For now, this is the best Enduro series in Canada. Therefore, Canadian Series. Maybe go get angry at baseball for calling a purely North American league (by geographic location, not players countries of origin), that calls their annual championship the World Series!
  • 3 2
@makripper This is going around in circles, so I will stop commenting after this. Is the series perfect? No. Is it as good as it can be? No. Have the organizers said they won't take any suggestions and have no interest in growing what they have created thus far? No. It will have more races each year likely, it also likely will have a greater geographic footprint each year. Instead of just shitting on good work from good people, ask how you can help. Great job by you to have been "trail building for ages doing plenty myself" but you should then understand that if a trail, at least a good one, can't be made in a day, neither can a good race series. Be patient while other people work, or offer to lend a hand. If you won't help, and will bitch and moan, then you bring nothing to the table.
  • 3 3
You pro "National" people are nothing but a broken record. Canada is too big and too under populated to have a national series. Realistically there should be a national championship with Provincial/regional qualifiers.

Only a handful of riders have the resources to travel across the country multiple times for multiple races. This should have all been self evident. Shame the organizers have delusions of grandeur and are calling their regional series a national one.
