Last Saturday, 10th of January 2015 New Zealands' Cardrona Ski Field turned into prime location for first round of NZMTB National Cup Series. Riders from across New Zealand and beyond gathered on the rocky and dusty track in the early hours of Saturday morning. The chairlift normally carrying skiers and snowboarders (Whitestar Express) was able to transport bikes and riders to the top with transformed name for the Summer - Dirtstar Express.

Pits

Practice runs finished at 11:15, followed by seeding runs. Competition was tough, rocks were sharp (22 out of 105 competing riders did not finish the race) and the atmosphere was pretty tense. Men's seeding runs gave Greg Williamson (Trek World Racing, UK) a second of advance above his team mate George Brannigan, NZ Champion and two seconds to another team mate - Brook Macdonald. Fastest seeding lady was local - Alanna Columb with advance of 15 seconds on Amanda Monk and 17 seconds on British 4X World Champion Katy Curd. After tough seeding runs everybody took a deserved lunch break and race runs commenced at three.

Elite men podium did not vary much from seeding runs and fastest men were as follows:

Elite Men:

1. Greg Williamson 2:45.8
2. George Brannigan 2:46.2
3. Matt Scoles 2:47.1
4. Brook Macdonald 2:47.8
5. Wyn Masters 2:48.5

Racing for ladies, on the other hand, took bit different path and Katy Curd improved her seeding run time by 19 seconds and took the win.

Elite Women:

1. Katy Curd 3:30.8
2. Alanna Columb 3:32.0
3. Veronique Sandler 3:44.9
4. Amy Cole 3:45.9
5. Amanda Monk 3:49.6

Matt Scoles 3rd! Yeah buddy! I always thought he deserved the the place Justin Leov left at TWR after he retired from DH. Especially after a WC season like he had riding for the Italian Trek team either 1 or 2 years prior to that. If I recall he never finished outside the top 20 at all that WC season and had several top 10's as well. (Not to mention winning all the Italian DH series races he entered). He's still good enough to deserve a WC ride...

Scolesy hauls ass. Comes in low under the radar but he can beat anyone in this country on his day. I think he's pretty happy where he is tho.
  • 1 0
I never said he wanted it, just I thought that he's more than good enough. So long as he's happy on his bike, that's what really matters.

Somebody wrote that report in their second language. I can't believe the dismal standard of "journalism" that appears on this site.

Great to know I'm not the only one who has noticed!

Matt Scoles might be the most underrated, undervalued dh racer in history. When is he gonna get a real shot on a world cup team??
