Rotorua Slopestyle Course Build Update

Mar 16, 2015
by Sean Leader

With less than two weeks to go before Crankworx Rotorua, Kelly McGarry, Tom Hey and Adam King are putting the finishing touches on a world class slopestyle course. Building a course like this is a high pressure job. They need to create a course that is both spectator friendly and challenging to the world's best riders. All the take-offs and landings must be dialled - if their math is off, someone is going to get hurt. We caught up with the three builders in the final days, as they nailed in the last few boards, packed down the take-offs and tested out their handiwork for the very first time. McGarry got the unenviable and nerve-wracking task of being course guinea pig, the first rider to run the jumps making sure everything flows smoothly.

This looks awesome. Not that you'd expect anything else from McGarry

More like something you'd expect from the bear-est of all claws. This is a very sick course.

Every course should be built by Riders/Competitors! Even WC I thought HARDLINE was insane! FEST SERIES! And now Kelly McGazza's CRANKWORKS ROTORUA! SICK! Not to mention many other events built by riders.

This course has jumps & ramps that look better than half the furniture in my house. Absolute perfection from McGarry.

Awesome slope style course, not to many tech stuff just big booters for big banger tricks

Kelly McGarry deserves all the credit he is getting but huge props aswell to Tom Hey and Adam King for this course (and their other creations for crankworx) their hard work is going to set this event apart.

Hipped boner log look prime! New feature?
  • 3 0

 Curved boner log = "boomawang"
  • 6 0
that dirt looks unreal! cant wait to watch

Beautiful craftsmanship. Beautiful shaped dirt. But is this a dirt jump or slopestyle contest? Where's the feature variety? Where's the line choice?
  • 4 3
I am a bit concerned as well. All of the pictures seem to be of the same jumps and features...just a different angle. I just hope they have allowed enough time a resources to build a course worthy of a Crankworx event. Can anyone who has actually seen the course on the ground comment about this?

Not many courses have line choice these days. It makes judging a lot simpler and more fair if everyone's riding the same line down the hill..
  • 8 0
Yeah line choice is a bit tricky. what usually happens is that riders figure out what line gets scored higher, and then take that one meaning that it just end up being a waste of time and resources to have built multiples. I personally have no problem with single line courses. Builders have a very short time frame to get everything done so to me its quality over quantity.

Saw the course last weekend. It is one lined so far (unsure if that will change) But the build quality is insane, will be great for viewing having just one line.
Empire of dirt has also done an awesome job with the rest of the event building. Super tidy dirt art.

Thanks @lilmike-nz. How far up does the course start?
  • 3 0
Considering McGarry is like 8 feet tall, how hudge is that ramp? (8 pics down, with the truck)
  • 2 0
Go big or go home, or don't even bother turning up lol, that's gonna be a sick event. Nice job!

 Looks incredible. Great work, McGazza

dang, id give a left nut for this track in my backyard, including the forest its in...
  • 5 0
Sure, but if you lost your left nut you may not be able to have that boner log.

Any news about the hurricane that might strike Rotorua ?
Don't mean to be mean, just informed !
  • 14 0
No Hurricane, cyclone has past without even getting near Rotorua, Surfs up on the east coast 8 metre swells yeeeeeeewwwww!!!
  • 10 0
 Crankworx : 1 - Hurricane 0
  • 2 0
The rain will have done the trick....firmed the soil up nicely!
  • 4 0
The hurricanes are actually playing pretty well this year. It's the blues or the crusaders who are more likely to end up with zeros in their scoreboard. Wait, wrong sport.
  • 1 0
Since when do Kiwi's call Cyclones hurricanes? Hopefully some rain that way to pack down the jumps even better.
  • 1 0
These photos do a great job of showing a different perspective of the massive jumps. Looks so sick!

Semeuk will feel right at home on that role in
