Farwell Canyon was first featured in the late 90's freeride movie Kranked 2 and still stands up today as a mecca of big mountain riding.

bigquotesI had the opportunity to revisit Farwell Canyon in Williams Lake, BC for the first time since 1999, and ride with locals and new generation big mountain wild men, James Doerfling and Jeremy "Jer-can" Stowards to shoot with photographer Margus Riga and cinematographer Mitch Cheek from Solos Productions.

I first visited this area shooting for the movie Kranked 2 with Richie Schley as Froriders and I did the first descents from the top on a bunch of the lines there. It was such a rush to ride this wild new terrain on our then state-of-the-art 5" travel Rocky Mountain Element and Pipeline, complete with V-brakes and 4" forks.

We used the first MTB POV helmet camera, a 1942 16mm film Gsap camera that they used to attach to the bottom of the wings of military planes in WW2. The filmers of the Kranked series bolted the camera to a helmet, which we called the "Misery Dome" because it was so heavy, loud and downright scary!

This time around it was tiny little GoPro's, big SRSuntour Rux forks and I was riding with two gnarly dudes that grew up riding here!! James and Jeremy are awesome, all around rippers and slay the steeps. We had a blast hanging out, carving turns and shooting for a day and a half. I was so stoked to ride with these guys on some fun, cool terrain that I hadn't seen for almost 20 years! Good memories and more good times!! Freeride is in a good place with the new generation!!

The opening section of the "The Classic" line as ridden by James.

The scariest section of The Classic is this chute. Once you re in you re commited to the end. It feels like stepping into an open elevator shaft. You just drop and hold on and make sure you make the left turn or slam into the wall.

Tippie is the reason I mountain bike. Still absolutely shredding!

I'll always remember that "wanna go for a ride?" he asked on a phone call in one of those early kranked movies. Still got it in my ear and the answer is still YES! Smile

tippie should be the official face of mountainbiking

 Dad can definitely ride.

These are some of the best pics I've seen of Farwell. Photo epic is right - damn!! Also, "Jer-can in a Wheelie nice picture"... my day is made.

That Stowards guy is stepping up his game, good on him, and James podium looks like a test mule? come on Knolly release your new DH bike... Wink

Always good to see Tippie going down a chute fast. Kudos to Margus for great pictures ;-)

 Yes! Podium!
  • 1 0
 His tire shows 26

Actually just noticed two different wheel sets, but seems like the same bike. The Podium print on the top tube is the new style though so there's a chance.....

So this is yet again another one of those "screw the PB calendar" situations (no offense, I already ordered one).

Just choose 12 of these and make me a 2017 calendar and I'll be happy. Nice job boys!

Not to take away from the epicness of this video or photos (they are unreal), but does anyone else want to see more of the rider's rigs? I would love to see more of James' Dodge and Tippie's Tundra, not to mention what other rider's ride around in.
  • 4 0
Their rigs.? , you mean their bikes right .? Podiums and maiden !,,,
  • 1 0
@Lagr1980: Rig is slang for vehicle, usually referring to a truck, jeep or van.
  • 1 0
@CSullivan: There was a feature on Tippie's Truck a while back!

Tippie is the granddaddy of big mountain riding, so much respect. That retro footage was done when I was a kid, and there he is doing chutes that most would walk away from 20 years later. Proof that freeride is a state of mind.

Killing it gents! Love the new guard of big mountain taking notes from the man who's been carving the steeps a new one for over two decades and still lays an edge like no one else! So rad! Pass that torch! Much love to you all!

For some reason riding like this actually is better seen in the still shots than the video IMO

That has to be some of the most epic scenery on the Earth. Those shots a breathtaking. Solid MTB adventure, thanks for sharing...and reminding me that i live in flat-as-fuck FL.

I ask a legit question about the legality of the trails and I get down voted below the threshold? This is an area located in the Chilcotin (although not in any parks or protected areas) and it does not appear on Trailforks. Is it not reasonable to ask whether or not bikes are welcomed?
  • 5 0
It is in Williams Lake, in the Cariboo.
  • 4 0
@pooler: About 50 min drive West of Williams Lake in the Chilcotin, to be precise.

Pretty easy to find the likely zone on Google Earth in about 30 seconds. Looks like it's crown land?
  • 1 0
It's a forest service road that is accessible to the public. I have heard of some people getting some static from local farmers and the trails are not sanctioned(as many are clinically insane!) but in general I think it's cool.
  • 6 0
cool story! sitting around that camp fire would be the funniest thing you would ever experience with Tippie!

 Awesome photos Margus!

Holy Crap, Stowards took me to Whistler on the last day of the season, when I was that 16 year old German exchange student that wanted nothing more than to ride BCs trails, a few years ago. And now Im seeing videos of him with Tippie, Im stoked. Definetly one of the nicest people in mountainbiking I have met.

Got me an envelope I'm sticking cash into in anticipation of getting one o' them enduro'ing machines what all the kids is has these days. Why not? They are true, do-all rigs. Still...I love seeing big bikes on big hills. Long live downhill bikes! Whoo!

 Doerfling is at another league...

Does it damage the tread on their tires to drag the back wheel down the whole chute like that?

It seems like it would wear it down really fast.
  • 1 0
the color contrast of Williams Lake pictures is always so awesome to me.

I can feel the dust even by juat watching the video. Niceee
