Last weekend was the third annual FrostBIKE event at the Silver Star Bike Park. FrostBIKE is used to say goodbye to the snow and act as the official kickoff to the Dunbar Summer Series of events. Remi Gauvin took the win on the fast and flowy course in under a minute; one of only five elites to do so. To be able to witness Remi, Lee, Anthony and Dillon charge the course as if it were hero dirt was something to see in person and gives you even more respect for their skill on two wheels regardless of conditions. The 2015 Dunbar Summer Series will officially begin July 5th back at the Silver Star Bike Park followed by events at Panorama Bike Park, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort and Fernie Alpine Resort.

Lola
Proceeds from the Dunbar Summer Series will go to the Love for Lola Fund, which will assist with my daughter’s rehabilitation. Lola is recovering from life-threatening viral encephalitis, which she was infected with in 2008. As a result, she has an acquired brain injury which involves mainly the left side of her brain and impacts her life greatly. She is non-verbal and developmentally delayed as a result of her brain injury. For approximately four years, Lola suffered from dozens of seizures daily which profoundly impaired her ability to recover and to participate in daily life. In January of 2013, she underwent brain surgery (Corpus Callosotomy) to control her seizures. Lola was seizure free for one year, but now she is still impacted daily by seizures. Proceeds from the Dunbar Summer Series will assist with her care and recovery, and any opportunity that we have to facilitate her engagement her in everyday life, be it swimming, biking, or enjoying life with her family. We have big goals for Lola's communication this year, and seek any chance to help her to grow in this area. Her incredible story is posted at Love For Lola

Were fat bikes not allowed or just to slow for this race? I can't say for sure until actually timing a run against a skinny bike but I feel that on snow I'm faster with fat tires than skinny tires. I was just surprised to NOT see any fat bikes at all...

I doubt you will ever see that happen

With climate change, this may be the next hybrid recreation sport. Lots of ski hills closed down early on the BC coast this year. Looks like crazy fun!

The interior is hurting bad too.

I'll take that bet. The hills took a savage beating this year and they are in it for the money. I am old enough to remember the birth of snowboarding and the absolute disdain on the part of every ski hill in canada towards the new sport. It flew in the face of everything snobby skiing held dear, but the dollar spoke and the lifts answered to snowboarding. Groomed runs suck, lots of experienced skiers are choosing to focus on backcountry, and the concept of trying out say, one or two runs being open to fat bikes on the hill with that one single chairlift having bike racks on it- is not too hard to believe. Take fernie, it is a bike town more than anything else. It has the racks on the elk chair, elk has access to lots of runs, and having two runs for fat bikes with I dunno, couple tabletops, coupla berms on a groomed run- you build it they will come. If fernie did that, I would buy a goofy fat bike, bring it and the snowboard to the hill, and have fun doing both. Win win. Shit they could even offer a dual seasons pass. BC does cool shit, I can see it happening. I'm surprised it hasn't already actually. C'mon fernie, you buncha lazy ass hippies, put down the trail mix and open the elk chair for fat bikes already.

If they'd throw some hooks on the Deer chair it could work well, lots of gentle terrain for bikes and access to the park area for skis, easy for them to make that their Fat bike area, if the skiing sucks, biking probably doesn't. But Fernie is not a biker's hill, they don't see the point of putting money in to get a return on it. They kinda expect it to snow bike trails....

I really hope Fernie and the other resorts in the area open up biking early this year

Fernie usually opens and closes the lifts for summer based on the school schedule, open late June and close the end of August, I'd love them to be open longer but I wouldn't hold my breath
