Nathan Rennie Talks 2012:
Nathan Rennie is a former downhill world champion and a true cycling legend.
Nathan spent 10 years travelling around the world racing Downhill and 4X in the UCI World Cups. Going straight from school to being a professional racer and then needing a break 10 years later, Nathan had to deal with something he never has encountered before.... normal life. This is an in-depth talk with Nathan about that transition and where the last 3 years of his life has taken him.
He covers a bunch of topics including:
-Leaving the World Cup tour mid season
-Discovering regular life and its ups and downs
-His latest project "Lower 45 Bike Camps" and an in-depth look at what goes on during them
-Going straight from High School to racing
-Getting back on a Santa Cruz V10
-His connection with 5.10 shoes and how they became so popular
Nathan has never spoken so intimately and passionately on camera before. This interview was filmed in his Gold Coast garage one week after being married to the lovely Cathy so there is fair call he is pretty stoked on life right now. Very little editing has been done so the rawness and true feeling of what he is saying comes through...
If you have time, sit back, relax and have a listen to what the man has to say.

Always loved this video of Rennie. Seriously, who jumps through trees like that?
Nathan's looks like the SS Ute judging by the wheels. I'm sure someone will recognise the handles and correct me."

Hey mate, yeah its a SS VE ute.... he loves that thing, and it hammers.
Stoked u lot like the vid, we've been talking ages about doing one and the timing was perfect after the wedding. He spoke so passionately.
Pass it on and let everyone know what the man is up to.
Cheers

Once we (we being you, me & the rest of the world) gave feedback through threads I posted across the world, Eric agreed to reproduce them. He knew nothing about DH and asked for suggestions of who he could sponsor.
I personally approaced Sean Heimdall of Monster at US Nationals and got Sam Hill in touch with Eric. I contacted Rennie personally and talked back and forth with him through MSN Messenger for a good 2 weeks and got him set up with 5.10 Also did my best to get Kovarik back in touch, but he never responded to Rennie or my emails, but finally 5.10 got him to call back.
I know it's just one simple sentence, but him taking credit for bringing back 5.10's is so far off from true. I worked by butt off to get them made again and so did Eric. All Rennie did was be lucky I got his email from Heimdall.
Steber's company had the original idea to use slow rebound rubber in tires and sourced their original shoe from 5.10. They introduced them and put them on the feet of their riders, Kovarik and Rennie and Hill who was still just starting out. But the Intense shoe never caught on and it was all they could do to sell 300 pairs in a little over 2 years.
Once bike parks came on the scene and those guys were still running their old beat down shoes at World Cups and what few guys I knew raved about them, I had to try them but they were sold out. And the reason 5.10's are so successful today is not because of me or Rennie. It's because 5.10 did the right thing at the right time.
Glad 2 see Rennie riding again. Have seen him manual up over a double & land riding out a nose manual

'Ute' is pronounced 'yoot', not, I believe, 'ooh-tay' like the First Nations people of the Colorado area.
The Master.
