Nathan Rennie Talks 2012:

Nathan Rennie is a former downhill world champion and a true cycling legend.

Nathan spent 10 years travelling around the world racing Downhill and 4X in the UCI World Cups. Going straight from school to being a professional racer and then needing a break 10 years later, Nathan had to deal with something he never has encountered before.... normal life. This is an in-depth talk with Nathan about that transition and where the last 3 years of his life has taken him.

He covers a bunch of topics including:

-Leaving the World Cup tour mid season
-Discovering regular life and its ups and downs
-His latest project "Lower 45 Bike Camps" and an in-depth look at what goes on during them
-Going straight from High School to racing
-Getting back on a Santa Cruz V10
-His connection with 5.10 shoes and how they became so popular

Nathan has never spoken so intimately and passionately on camera before. This interview was filmed in his Gold Coast garage one week after being married to the lovely Cathy so there is fair call he is pretty stoked on life right now. Very little editing has been done so the rawness and true feeling of what he is saying comes through...

If you have time, sit back, relax and have a listen to what the man has to say.

I remember watching this guy on one of the Down movies or maybe it was Double Down? Anyway I remember thinking this dude is just talent on a bike. He was on a team with the likes of Kovarik and a couple other cats. That's when I was like 13 years old. He has been my favorite rider ever since. I'm glad he's getting back in touch with the mountain bike world. I missed the giant fellow. Good luck with married life and getting along with other dreams and goals Rennie!

Wicked video. I remember drinking and riding with Stomper when I lived in Penrith and worked at a Wheels in Motion. He could handle a bike like no one I have ever seen before. Great guy with so many great stories. Still one of the best all round riders, just check out the red bull event they held in OZ years ago. dave

Always loved this video of Rennie. Seriously, who jumps through trees like that?

And that turn, after the jump... He's got some skills right there .

What.... who the F even thought of that line !!!!!!?????

I have to say, Rennie has always been very insightful and well spoken when reflecting on his situation. Even in this video you can see him going through a maturation process - the way he talks about adjusting to real life is true, no matter how successful or not any of us are... He often gets a bad wrap for being "whiny" or "butt hurt" but I think it's because he's a guy that likes to wear his heart on his sleeve. He's vulnerable, but he's ok with that. When you are in the public eye - in any profession - you have to deal with a certain amount of public scrutiny. Being yourself, and not Mr Super Gnar Gnar at all times, brought out the haters in the mtb fan-dom woodwork. I for one am a huge fan of Rennie's speed, style, and overall passion for the sport. Induct this man into the Hall of Fame!

All I remember about him from a while ago, was that he looked like a lumberjack. And he was fast as fuck.
  • 2 0
I feel ya Butch. Its too easy for people to think you're butt hurt about something when you're not.Rennies' got his career highlights and accolades...why not give him credit for something he didn't do ,also?: /If Butch and others are doing some of the real work behind the scenes, that should be acknowledged over making up convenient, pretty sounding stories.Someone will always be willing to take credit for somebody else's effort.I think everybody should be able to understand that.

always been one of my favourite riders, we took him back to his hotel in fortbill in a taxi after he sparked some jock out for taking the piss out of him! he did seem a bit down, didn't realise at the time that would be his last world cup! met him a few times and he was always friendly and a good laugh, good luck to him in the future.

Nathan's looks like the SS Ute judging by the wheels. I'm sure someone will recognise the handles and correct me."

Hey mate, yeah its a SS VE ute.... he loves that thing, and it hammers.
Stoked u lot like the vid, we've been talking ages about doing one and the timing was perfect after the wedding. He spoke so passionately.

Pass it on and let everyone know what the man is up to.
Cheers

This is the guy who made the film, and conducted the interview with Nathan. Long time friend and mountain biker Petri. He's been on the scene since bike couriers and parachute pants! Check his films, he's done some great stuff and doesn't give himself nearly enough credit for it =]]

Loved the no drama honesty. Cool to hear a one of the legends talk about the normal grind. Endless thanks for role in 5.10. Big props and best of luck!

He did NOT bring 5.10's back. We started a freaking internet thread about getting them to be reproduced after Intense couldn't sell their entire stock of 300 pairs. I personally spoke with Jennifer (Steber's wife). She told me who was responsible for them at 5.10. I spent hours on the phone with Eric, their former marketing director. I still have the first pair of the new black ones at home that were sent to me by 5.10 to test out.

Once we (we being you, me & the rest of the world) gave feedback through threads I posted across the world, Eric agreed to reproduce them. He knew nothing about DH and asked for suggestions of who he could sponsor.

I personally approaced Sean Heimdall of Monster at US Nationals and got Sam Hill in touch with Eric. I contacted Rennie personally and talked back and forth with him through MSN Messenger for a good 2 weeks and got him set up with 5.10 Also did my best to get Kovarik back in touch, but he never responded to Rennie or my emails, but finally 5.10 got him to call back.

I know it's just one simple sentence, but him taking credit for bringing back 5.10's is so far off from true. I worked by butt off to get them made again and so did Eric. All Rennie did was be lucky I got his email from Heimdall.

Hit a sore spot there did he bizutch? Never show em your weakness!
  • 2 1
Karpiel, you're probably right. With me, it's the little things that are easy to get right in life, so why fudge those things. I mean "taping" a pair of them up?

Steber's company had the original idea to use slow rebound rubber in tires and sourced their original shoe from 5.10. They introduced them and put them on the feet of their riders, Kovarik and Rennie and Hill who was still just starting out. But the Intense shoe never caught on and it was all they could do to sell 300 pairs in a little over 2 years.

Once bike parks came on the scene and those guys were still running their old beat down shoes at World Cups and what few guys I knew raved about them, I had to try them but they were sold out. And the reason 5.10's are so successful today is not because of me or Rennie. It's because 5.10 did the right thing at the right time.

bizutch,to try to curb a heart attack, I think you read too deep in what I meant by role. I love my 5.10s and props to all those involved. As far as honesty, a little self reflection on life is a good thing. Don’t forget to breath man!

I planted the first rubber tree, so I think allot of people here deserve some credit Smile
  • 1 0
He's just saying it how it is (or was), and I remember those original shoes, Hardly anyone had them and I was stupidly skeptical. I don't think Intense really tried to market them aggressively, maybe they were depending upon word of mouth. Good thing you opened your mouth, thank you if the story is true.
  • 1 0
They couldn't move them for that and other reasons. They only put out a red/yellow/black color and one other color. Plus they were mid-ankle(think Shimano Am-45) so off the bike they didn't do it for most. Plus sticky rubber was new tech. It all worked out in the end.

Glad 2 see Rennie riding again. Have seen him manual up over a double & land riding out a nose manual

Great to hear all of these details explained by the man himself. Sounds like he's been inundated with emails asking him what the hell he was up to. Awesome rider.

Is that a Vauxhall Maloo behind him? Great on a bike and good taste in cars, I like him.
  • 2 0
Sort of. It's a Holden - they are exported to England as Vauxhalls. The Maloo is a special model created by Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) which is the one shown on Top Gear (with the Corvette engine). But Holden make other utes with the same shape that are much cheaper - some a still pretty tuned V8s, others are V6s.

Nathan's looks like the SS Ute judging by the wheels. I'm sure someone will recognise the handles and correct me.

'Ute' is pronounced 'yoot', not, I believe, 'ooh-tay' like the First Nations people of the Colorado area.
