We've seen the racing, we've seen the action, but what happens away from the track, what makes a World Cup winner?
Mike Parenteau documents the elements that came together on the day of 29/7/2012, a day that will live long in the memory of a young man from New Zealand, the small islands with a big heart.
too much of the random shots and philosophical voice over bs that ruined life cycles mixed in. but otherwise pretty good. *just noticed someone else had pretty much made the same comment*
get out of here, life cycles was amazing. "philosophical voice over bs" was better than listening to riders talk about how the terrain is gnarly, jumps are big and how they feed off eachother.
Yea if you dont care about riders then sure life cycles was great, for a film test. I watch the movies because its cool to see what the riders actually are like out of comps etc, not to see a load of snow melting and timelapses.
First of all: Life Cycles was not about the pro riders nor was it about their view on or experience with biking. It was about a view of riding that was way closer to what the average everyday rider experiences on his local trails each day. And all those little special moments in the surrounding nature are one of the main reasons why I appreciate every single ride. Life Cycles is the only movie that I can show to non-bikers so that they get an understanding of why I ride. If anyone watched it and even after the "this is not a bike movie" tagline still expected something like the TMZ of MTB, dont blame the movie.
Now, for this video here, many people think that just by using the same principles as their inspiration, they will get the same level of quality. The music is so clearly "inspired" by the Life Cycles score, its not even funny (11:09 gets the cake). But while Life Cycles had great structure, pacing and substance, this mainly consists of slowmo shot after random slowmo shot with way too little DOF. There are some really great shots in there and also a interesting story behind it all, but the way that its told is just very chaotic and hard to follow. Style over substance. Next time dont waste your talent trying to recreate somebody else's vision, create your own and make it as good as theirs. Id surely watch it.
to matt5311, NZNDURO: Don't disrespect a movie that you didn't understand! Heart and soul were put into the making of Life Cycles. If a lot in the industry are criticizing it doesn't mean they are right. You have to have your own head and feel it. Those who pay attention to the industry can see the trend in videos and videos like this help bring a new aspect with another take. Riding videos do get boring at times, cuz they are getting to the point of looking exactly the same as the one previously posted.
One thing that was said about it was this "Life Cycles is ahead of its time" and that is true. Everybody is confined in a little box called the comfort zone. Not bold enough to look outside of that box and try something daring, and in the process show everybody else how you feel on a canvas of moving stills. You should go, try doing that and then we shall see how it will come out. I give big credit to those who go beyond the generic riding videos and explore something new, something that makes you think, feel... and lose yourself in the moment!
I forgot who said it, but watched a bmx interview video and one rider said that the web media ruined the whole aspect of making a movie that stands out and kids have become more meaner because when it's outside of the generic standards others hear complaints about how this and that was wrong. I wish that for a little while you couldn't download or watch videos/movies online and be able to just go to the movies and experience it on a silver screen.
I watched Life Cycles in a movie theater and from the first titles to the very last of them, I was glued. Those who have had such an opportunity to watch it at the premieres, know that the experience was phenomenal. You should appreciate the fact that such movies are being put out now for free for you to watch. It takes a lot of time to make them.
Demz I second all you have said, 90% of all the movies on here look or have the same basic concept, as much as I love watching them it all gets a bit boring.
demz. As Steven Seagal says "assumptions are the mother of all f*ck ups" so don't make them. I did appreciate where life cycles was coming from and the cinematography was impressive but also not very inspiring. I agree that now many films and edits are made to suit an audience of severe ADD sufferers. I enjoy learning about the back story and hearing what people have to say, but I can't appreciate random sound bites that are there for no purpose than to sound a bit like something Alan Watts would say (and failing at it).
to matt5311: One video quote for you (from a documentary about trends and influences and how ideas are born): "there is no right or wrong way. If I put these two fabrics together it feels right for me". If it didn't inspire you, then leave this to yourself or go into a forum and make a discussion about it.
If you have been listening to the narrative in Life Cycles then it's quite a personal story there, which some people do in fact relate to at some level or another. However looks like the emotional aspect held in the narrative did not get to you. These are not random sound bites as you call. It's a story told creatively and mountain biking for me in the movie was a way to move you more and show the grace and beauty.
Like I said before why don't you give it a go and make something that is outside of the normal standards and while doing that chip your heart soul into it so that the audience will feel the way you feel about any particular part of your life or about something that you feel personally strong about and then we will talk further. It is very easy to criticize. Heck every kid on the interwebs is a self-announced critic these days. But seriously... try to create art!
That part where the little kid looks out of the car window, and sees the dh rider coming down!!! That moment when it slow-mo'd, was so Massive! In my head, I'm like, wow, shit just got real! ...It's on!!! (00:06:35)
I like how Steve smith said "i got that feeling pedaling up the hill, and that's where it all began" it Makes me remember that feeling when i got my first bike and rode it. Because that's the moment where it all began.
Massive fan of brook, aswome rider. but since he has moved to trek which is an epicley good move. trek and red bull have created some awful videos, this goes for the rest of the trek team videos.
sorry for not know this, anyone please for which WC is he talking about wasn't the 2012 minnar who won the WC ?? or are they talking about different competition ?!
Greg Minaar, won the DH World Championship (which is 1 race in the season), But there's also a World Cup, which consists of 6-7 different races to crown a world cup leader, one of which Brook McDonald won.
Dude, it's not that hard. See what you wrote above: "World Cup Overall Ranking, 2012 !!!" The world CUP overall ranking as I explained before, is a series of 6 races in which they battle for points, after the 6 races are done, the rider who added up more points overall wins the World CUP OVERALL. Much as the Formula 1. The World Championship, is a different race, it's only 1 a year, and they ride for their country, whoever wins that race is Word CHampion for a year. An example is 2007: Sam Hill won both, the World CHampionship and the World Cup overall, proving himself dominant throughout the season. They're two completely different titles. I tried to explain it the best way, hope you get it!
thnx alot mate, now it makes sense! sorry it took me so long to understand! So the WORLD CUP OVERALL it's like champions league in football/soccer, and the WORLD CHAMPION it's like world cup in football! it makes sense thnx alot! really thnx for taking the time to explain this to me.
Ragot was robbed... Atherton should've been dq'd for cutting the tape. That would've given Rachel no points for the race, Ragot more points for 2nd and she could have held it for the rest of the series getting the overall title. Tracy deserved the win, Ragot deserved the title.
