Help save Galbraith Mountain (Washington)

Apr 1, 2011
by Reilly Kintzele
I'm sure not everyone has heard, so I figured I would pass on the news and direct everyone to the article in the Bellingham Herald about the termination of the agreement between WHIMPs Mountain Bike Coalition and Polygon. The mountain will no longer be open to the public meaning thousands of people will have to go find somewhere else to ride, hike, or enjoy the beautiful view from.

Read the article in the Bellingham Herald here.

Also please check out preservegalbraith.org for more information!

For those of you that don't know Galbraith, here are a couple videos(and another article) of the mountain and what it has to offer.

It's sad to see such an awesome place like this be taken away and I know that I'll miss it, and I know that everyone else will too. Maybe Polygon will change its mind... so be proactive and help out in anyway you can!

This is a ploy to try to force the City to buy this land. They went back on their word. Poly said they would keep the agreement with the MTN Bike group and they would only be logging 60 acres of land every year, now this shit. So who knows. But people rode there before Trillium so keep riding until they run you out. Just look out for the good ol boys on motorcycles and 4 wd's they think this is their ticket back in there. They think all their trails they cut years ago still exist, but they are all tore to hell, so you know they will be jumping on the bike trails, and with they will leave their cans of Budweiser and Pabst all over the mountain. This could get shitty to say the least.

This is awful... It is a great mountain with great trails where people have put years of work into developing and building. It would be extremely sad for all of the bikers to see their trails and their work go away for this logging.
Biking>Logging

The last time I was in Bellingham (before any of this started) somebody told me that they thought that this might happen. Now It's happening. Like the Preserve Galbraith Facebook page and go to preservegalbraith.org to help.

"Just look out for the good ol boys on motorcycles and 4 wd's they think this is their ticket back in there" Let me just add a little perspective to that remark. I am an avid off road motorcyclist and mt biker. Ten years ago I was riding my dirt bike up on Galbraith nearly everyday. I was also the primary builder of "Unemployment Line" a very popular machine built mt bike trail on Galbraith. I'm a good ol boy who is fully capable of building legit trail. I don't think stereotyping recreational users like that helps the cause right now. This should be an opportunity to rally more voices. We need equestrians, dirt bikers, hikers, environmentalists and mt bikers pulling together to save this hill. Only when its saved can we start to sort out who gets to recreate on it where and how. In my ideal world there would be a place for everybody on Galbraith with well designed trail to accommodate all the different users.

Such a bummer. Everyone that reads this needs to get involved and take the time to go to preservegalbraith.com and show that you support the area. We can't let such a good riding area get taken away from us like this.

Oops sorry about that. I just wanted to emphasize that everyone needs to go to that website and help out Galby!

O ya definitely! Just didn't want them to get confused when it didn't work.

They do not see that Bellingham will lose money in the long run. Yes logging will produce lots of money, but I come down nearly every month to ride Galbraith and I buy stuff from local shops. I believe tourism would be more beneficial in the long run.

i agree with what youre saying. knocking out all the natural resources helps the economy in the short run, but soon those will be gone and not only with the woods be gone but the local tourism economy will diminish as well. these big companys need to stop looking at the short run benefits because they are not worth the damage that will be caused to future generations.

the way i see it this is just a great opportunity. forever builders have been limited to what they can build on the mountain. now that there isnt any one looking over us its free range to build whatever we want and as big as we want. no more safety standards. i dunno this is just my opinion.

Where are the hippies and greenpeace when you need them? Instead of focusing on "whale war", we should have a program about trail in the US and how they provide fun for the all family with the least environmental repercussion. I mean most trail get guild buy using fallen lumber, the natural features available, and by Man Powered Shoveling.
I've heard plenty of BS when it comes to trail such as kids will go on features and get hurt or we will disturb the forest animals... Truth be told, a kid should never be unattended in the middle of the woods and most animals don't seem to mind. Bears seem to be digging tables while marmots and wild turkeys are master saboteurs (they will wait for you in the middle of blind turn). I mean come on, MTB community is really respectful of the environment. We avoid know animal paths and habitat AAAANNNND we be cleaning garbage on mountains.
Perhaps we need some "celebrity" to start riding.

Hey folks, understand that this isn't a "Logging vs. Biking" issue. This land has been a working commercial forest forever and the mt. bikers have been able to co-exist with the logging for over 2 decades and trails have been re-built after sections were logged. It's an issue of a landowner that inherited a piece of land they had no interest in owning. We (mt. bikers) who've dedicated thousands of hours to build 44+ miles of trail are the only real play the current owner has in finding a way to get rid of the property. Trust me, we are just pawns in this political game. What can B'ham and Galbraith riders do? Sign up on www.preservegalbraith.org

"THEY" are Poly..and they will make plenty of money. Whether they log it, or sell it. The people are the ones that screwed. This is a dirty trick to stir the city up and get the land sold quickly and above what its worth in this recession. Some big whig at Poly is loving this.

This blows! As a local filmmaker i'd hate to think that one of our main riding locations as well as shooting spots is going to be taken from us. Not only is this a detriment to riders allover Washington but prevents awesome edits like the ones above from making their way to pinkbike an elsewhere that show just how awesome the northwest really is. For the amount of time WHIMPS and local builders have put into making these trails pristine and dialed, this is what I would consider a huge slap in the face.

Damn... I have been riding this mountain since 5th grade when I got into mountain biking. This place has been the most fun and progressive all mountain ride in the area, and I'm mad as fuck to see it go. This place supplied hundreds of people a good healthy activity in the area, and now I am terribly sorry to see our area lose this greatness. Also look at our environment. The NW Washington area is beautiful and riders help preserve it, by wanting forest lands to not be developed. Now it is up in the air and the NW is losing its true nature attraction. Hope to see some change and possibly a come back of riders in that area. I'm riding there until i get kicked out. - peace

 Hey folks-

I recently moved to this area, so I don't have the emotional ties that you all have with Galbraith but I do know how you all feel. I had the opportunity to ride these trails for the first time yesterday and had a blast. I feel warmly welcomed into your community and will do what I can to learn more about this issue and lend a hand where I can.

I wrote a little thing on my blog about my session. There is a video and some links and all that stuff.

Thanks again for making me feel so welcome and for the hard work you have all put into these trails. Truly a world class community.

Cheers!

BHam should use the screwy eminent domain laws and just seize the property. F the owner.

sad... hopefully something can be done and they won't close the mountian for us....

So frustrating. Galby, we'll do what we can!

Polygon/Tinrock is just doing this to spark an outcry from the public, thus forcing the city to buy the mountain for way more than it's worth. I mean really, $20 mil?
  • 1 0
what did they pay for it, I cant find that info. I heard 12, is that correct?
  • 1 0
I think Trillium payed 20 Million, and they went broke so they had to pay a lot less than that.
  • 1 0
I think it was 12 or 14, somewhere around there. I hope the city can pay about the same if they end up buying it.

It doesn't matter where you live, please sign the petition to help us save out mountain. It means the world to the people who work and ride it. Thanks

 This sucks. Frown

I think the "Pedal Driven" people need to get involved in this one
  • 2 0
Actually, ANYBODY that has ANY vested interest in this place needs to get involved. Whether you ride there a little, a lot or not at all. This effects nearly every user group in mountain-biking, so a unified effort would be the best option.
