Same angle for my shot of Kinrade on the Oakley Sender as last night s practice session but real deal now qualifying. Unfortunately Kinrade one of the original big mountain riders went down on the landing and rag dolled hard.

One last look for Kinrade. This will be my final Rampage as a competitor. I kinda hoped for something better. Kinrade wanted to do a second farewell run but was simply too battered to make the hike back up.

Mike Hopkins had a pretty sick line. He was rolling the ridge top old school style and was throwing in some nice style on the small stuff as well as throwing down one big step down to lead into the lower section of venue. The plan from there was to hit one of the biggest senders on the track. But the wheels came off of that plan when he went much too fast and rag dolled the landing hard enough that every medic in sight was sprinting to his aid. Hopkins was able to walk off under his own poer but doing a second run was simply not happening.

Kenny Smith washed a front wheel near the top of his line and then tomahawked harder than damn near anyone else I ve seen in the six Rampage events I ve been lucky enough to shoot. Somewhere in that dirt washing machine Smith sprained both ankles badly enough that his bid for the Rampage crown was over. A disappointed Smith was stoic about not being able to throw down the run he wanted but make no mistake he ll be back next time.

surprised pilgrim rode this event ,looked like he was flying a hard tail,as well .One of the best DJ riders there is . I'm amazed no one even wears elbow guards ,that's just nuts
  • 282
if sam were running clipless, he might have been able to pull of that front hand spring.
  • 213
hes not running hardtail its an ns soda fr
  • 201
i think when 2012 rampage is over sam pilgrim will only have his two front teeth
  • 104
I actually found the hidden comment very funny. Too bad for Pilgrim and all the riders who crashed though.

Pilgrim should go to New Zealand for the winter and spend some time on a DH bike so he can kill it next year

Which hidden comment, there are two of them now? Fanboy clones on here are so sensitive anything slightly not politically correct gets hidden within an hour.

Pilgrim said on his facebook page he should have just brought his hardtail...yeah, like that would have prevented his cartwheel to faceplant. If he really means it he should sack up and come back next year with it! I'm calling you out, Pilgrim, you hear me you Rampage hater! I'll even take him on head to head, since I'll be on a DH rig by then I'll have an added safety advantage.
  • 852
Protour.... and I mean this in the kindest possible way.... go deepthroat a chode.
  • 140
Your calling him out Protour?! Come on, for sure there are others that don't love this event. Ken bailed off an 80 ft cliff. He could easily be in a wheelchair now. At least Sam is being honest. Unless you have walked on the course ( which I have not ) we have no idea what these guys go through in this event.
This makes crankworx look small. Anyone who rides this event even in first round quali deserves huge props, only the best riders on the planet are there.
  • 236
I had to Google "chode". I laughed so hard I think I pulled something.
@Protour, I actually agree with the fact that people here are a bit too sensitive. I mean, Piglet Orange got 100+ neg props for that joke? Seriously!?
  • 65
Protour always seems to think in the same general direction as me but then blows it way out of context. But not pumped on pilgrims hate. "i travelled 1000's of miles to fall and crash on my bike" If you didnt want to go im sure you really didnt have to. Besides hes way better off sand bagging every euro dirt jump event until martin eventually passes him completly.

All 3 of you make some points I agree with, I really hope he brings his hardtail next year. His hate isn't a big deal, I understand where he is coming from. Thanks for the relevant, thoughtful comments. Hope everyone kills it tomorrow, but nobody gets killed....seriously. I have been there, it's terrifyingly steep.
  • 85
Yo protour. You couldn't ride your way out of a paper bag. Leave the rampage to real pros. That goes for you knuckleheads like pilgrim also. Come on a halfass bike and catch a beatdown. Camera's rolling and now i rolling on the floor laughing. This been happening every time. Some riders think they soo badass dont need a dh bike for rampage. Well non of them qualify or make it past one run.
  • 50
Maybe Pilgrim really HAD to go, maybe it was a term in some contract that he has to attend the races they invite him or something like that.
  • 20
 Casey Groves did..
  • 52
I have mixed feelings about this event. Sure the riding is unbelievable, but the consequences are too high. When the top 10 in a competition don't all finish, there is a problem. How does a rider turn this event down with all the hype?
  • 715
flag Protour (Oct 7, 2012 at 12:55) (Below Threshold)
Sh*tshka, I could ride Rampage, and would compete if invited. I'd fare better than Pilgrim on a hardtail. I'm not saying I would qualify, but I'd give it the old college try.
  • 61
Pilgrim went huge and his front wheel taco-ed. He absolutely slayed up until that point but maybe he would enjoy Rampage better if he learned how to ride on a big bike.... haha. I honestly believe that he would get a top 10 easily if everything went his way. He has some balls.
  • 30
@Protour did u srs just say ud be better than pilgrim idont no u but im guessin your just an arogent guy who just sits behind his keyboard all day

what are these guys infallible? why is the wind always at fault? these guys are the best, but they do make mistakes...that's what makes them great= they are human, thus subject to error. stop blaming the wind
  • 341
@sicsoma if you were there you would understand that the wind plays a huge roll. Stop being a dumb ass.
  • 192
oh wow. Let's look at it this way ,if your driving a car on the high way the wind can bblow you a foot out of your lane . If your going around a turn and you gass too much you could whip the tail of the vehicle, and not do a smooth turn as a result.every thing is a factor .
When you do a drop on a mountain bike, 7-15 ft, you can do it at speed and do a rear wheel landing, no problem. You could do that same drop slow ,bunny hopping off the lip, and do some tricks as you drop .
Now sending it 15 to 25 ft , is a different ball game , now if you bunnyhop of that drop... a little nudge, like you might do off a curb ,everything changes you may go another 5 ft farther out because of that little extra effort. Any thing you do the slightest twist, could cock your landing a hair side ways ,and cause you to land diagonal to the landing transition.. Not perfectly straight .
now 25 to 40 Ft drops i don't know about personally.I imagine everything is that much more intense , that's why they are pros at redbull . they're going big .
It may be a DNF or DNS to their record as a competitor if they fall. To my status it's a DNE ,"Did Not Enter"!
  • 132
I'm barely capable of a 2 ft jump and even I can feel the effects of wind. Pretty obvious that a gust can totally throw off a jump as you free-fall through a 30ft drop.
  • 55
Yeah 30 ft drop isn't even high to these guys ! The Sender i swear the gap to the landing is 35 ft the actual drop is 40 , so that isn't a straight drop. it requires a lot of speed to clear .
Also the canyon gaps they are doing are sicker than the drops . In a lot of ways jumping is harder than dropping because there are more movements . You setting up the jump how much you lean into the forks to slam the rear suspension into the face of the jump to pop off it. Possibly the jump is a kicker that just throws you and you don't need to compress, but figuring the speed ...considering the gap is 60 ft?? A speed o meter would be nice !?
  • 1112

Why all the Pilgrim hate here ? Sam's an awesome rider, he is entitled to hate whatever he wants to hate. Rampage is not his style, but he still went out there and pushed himself and rode.

Riding Redbull Rampage > posting on Pinkbike..... give the guy some respect.

It is his job and he had better sack up and improve his all mountain skills if he ever wants to win the overall title, cause the Rampage ain't going away...if anything I think it should be double points. But it's no big deal for him to say he hates it, we all feel that way about things sometimes, hes just being honest about the emotions he feels after such a horrific crash. He will hopefully learn from this and improve....what doesn't kill you makes you stronger...hopefully.

 That's for sure. Nuff said.

Rampage needs a healthy Gee Atherton, Kenny Smith and fully healthy Claw (sure his line'll be sick, but we don't know how is recent back injury will affect or not his riding).

Benderoni is a more insane, definitely more skilled, russian version of Bender. He's just crazy. I would be afraid to watch him going down Utah mountains.

  • 42
Its no longer about protection, its now all about style... but its also damn hot in utah right now. Germany the weather is much like it is here in canada in october... COLD and wet... but where the rampage is being done, in the zion national park in utah, usa... the forecast high for today (which will be right when the finals start), is 0% chance of rain, 18% humidity, and twenty six celcius degrees, under a blazing sun, and without any vehicles to shuttle riders to the top of the mountain so they have to PUSH their own bikes up. I am a little surprised thought that more riders aren't using the various visco-elastomer polymer armors as they're so much lighter weight, and breath so much better than rigid hard armors, and for straight impacts they do just as well. Hell given the amount of tumbling that happens in crashes down a mountain of rock hard dirt, they should stiffen up and stay pretty stiff until the rider comes to a halt.
  • 31
"Its no longer about protection its now all about style" that makes zero sense. Everyone in this room is now dumber I award you no points and may god have mercy on your soul

Just saying he is closer to a bmxer than a mountain biker. But he calls himself a mountain biker. You gotta respect an event like that not like a brat saying you "hate" it. He should be stoked to ride there. Its a dream of mine to ride there and i probably wont ever get to. He should feel honored and fortunate to be able to be invited to an event like rampage!
  • 123
Pretty sure he rides a mountain bike haha and has competed in the british downhill series so.... But surely you'd be super dissapointed to travel soo many miles to an event he probably knew wasnt his style, to spend lots of his money and sponsors money on riding two runs which ultimately have lead to a bad crash and not a great deal of positives he probably does feel fortunate he is a really nice guy but must be angered by his circumstance

I support brycemtb, Pilgrim in a diferent video calls: Rampage stupid, Its sad that because he can't ride BIG Mountain FREEride !!!!! Just DJmx, the dude just hate's the event. Lame attitude !!!!!!!!!!
  • 41
"I hate rampage" but only this new format not the 2008,04,03,02,01 rampage , i think whit all respect, rampage is abaout "big mountain" event , right, so what they make a big sender instead to let the riders do whatever they want, like semenuk, brendog, etc(rampage not need a wooden stuff like ramps just the right landscape).Wath i mean is that maybe the event is taking another path, for me a lover for old school freeride its very disappointing see how the Zink run won over the Gee and Bearclaw runs (without underestimating Zink one of my favorite riders), today just need a trik and thats done,FMB should separate these events appart from DJ and slopestyle to see the very best athletes of the sport. but its just my opinion, a guy not have the balls to ride these stuff. cheers and good luck to everyone tomorrow.

Say it's a preference if you will, but at a minimum back protection should be mandatory. Just because it's Redbull extreme event, doesn't mean you can't play it safe. No one here will call you sissy. If it was every rider would wear it and not complain - Just like the WC event held in France where Bulldog won.

I vote POD for pilgrims crash photo and am glad everybody that crashed walked away relatively un hurt. These guys deserve massive props for going out there and pushing the boundrys of what is possiblle on a bike. I remember what seems like a lifetime ago now when I first saw rampage and how it fully encompassed the expression of freedom in my minds eye. from that point I saw a unity in Dh/Fr riding that Other diciplines Could not comprehend when they asked "why"?, I likely will never soar to Those heights on my bike, and most rampage sized hits I wouldnt even try to straight air But when Im riding and everythings working good it feels natural, its the only time when I really live Right in this very molment... nothing else matters, and the world becomes silent and fluid..and mine alone.

.... I also vote for them to all be payed the hockey players wages this season ( since they're not working this year, lol ) .... biking is so much more.. Smile

  • 20
they all stood up and said I'm OK..............................................not
  • 10
How the hell is anyone gonna try to do this without at least 180mm travel in front and back (save for some of the DH AirShox in the rear but those are just as efficient)
  • 10

  • 10
....when do we draw the line? Must we kill all our competitors of this sport? Gets to the point of being stupid.
